Luis Verde -][- WORLD OF DISTRACTIONS –Mp3– [Youkali Music, 2012]

With a brief, but intense career behind him, saxophonist Luis Verde Extremadura, a key part of some of the most exciting musical projects of the moment (Citric Trio, The Wachisneis, Ander García Quintet, Orchestra Afrodisian …) and one of the musicians promising of the new – and hyper – National Jazz generation, now confirms best wishes with “World Of Distractions“, his personal debut. A warm and close work, deeply marked by the Mediterranean light, the Afro-Cuban rhythmic pulse and the patent devotion legends as Thelonious Monk, or closer in time as Avishai Cohen, Miguel Zenon, Guillermo Klein … Magnificently assisted by a select group of young Spanish and Cuban jazz (Ariel Bringuez on tenor, Roberto Pacheco on trombone, Luis Guerra at the piano, Ander Garcia on bass and drummer Michael Olivera) Luis Verde is postulated with this debut definitely one of the more sensible voices, personal and innovative Spanish Jazz today. The future is here … -[Excerpt | Biography Translated to English]-

“Meyers, while swinging hard shows an incredible dynamic range complimented with the lyrical nuances of bassist Loh for a ballad that much like ‘A Glimpse Of Past Events’ is a tune likely to get stuck in your head on more than one occasion. (…) Old school becoming new cool has the Christian Meyers Quintet nailing it straight through. A one word review of East Autumn may best be described as ‘addictive’.” Criticaljazz.com 10/12 (Brent Black)

Christian Meyers Quintet, EAST AUTUMN

Christian Meyers Quintet -][- EAST AUTUMN –Mp3– [Neuklang, 2012] –

Musicians:
Christian Meyers – trumpet, flugelhorn; Andi Maile – tenor sax; Ull Möck – piano; Jens Loh – double bass; Eckhard Stromer – drums

Manu Katché -][- MANU –Mp3– [ECM Records, 2012] –

Eponymously-titled album from Manu Katché. On his fourth ECM disc, Manus unique drumming sets the scene and direction, with compositions and arrangements radiating outward from its rhythm-patterns. His strongly propulsive yet relaxed groove is unlike any other drummers, and it lifts up the soloists. Personnel in the ever-changing Katché band currently includes Norwegians Nils Pettter Molvaer and Tore Brunborg, first heard together on ECM in the band Masqualero in the 1980s: they still play most attractively together.

British keyboardist Jim Watson also makes a strong showing with minimalistically-insistent as well as lyrical piano and thick, swirling organ. Recorded March 2012 in the South of France, and issued on the eve of a major European tour. -[Editorial Review | Amazon]-

Christoph Stiefel -][- LIVE –Mp3– [BASHO MUSIC, 2012] –

Live! is the first UK album from top Swiss pianist Christoph Stiefel’s Inner Language Trio. It is the first time Basho has released music from an all-European ensemble. Many of Stiefel’s pieces use the compositional device of Isorhythms, a concept dating from the middle ages but which leads to a very contemporary sound.

‘Live!’ captures the trio liberated from the restrictions of the studio in Saalfelden, Amburg and Munchen. The album summarises and builds on eight years of work and finds the musicians reaching remarkable levels of empathy and interaction. -[Editorial Review | Amazon]-

Bill Laswell -][- Means of Deliverance –Mp3– [INNERHYTHMIC, 2012] –

Over the course of his illustrious career, visionary bassist-producer Bill Laswell has been one of the most prolific and restlessly creative forces in contemporary music. A sound conceptualist who has always been a step ahead of the curve, he has put his inimitable production stamp on a stunning range of important recordings by such stars as Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, Public Image Ltd, Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, Bootsy Collins, Motorhead, Sting, Carlos Santana, just to name a few. Probably most notable was Herbie Hancock, who co-wrote with Laswell the pivotal 1983 worldwide smash-hit single Rock-It, which introduced scratching to the mainstream, inspired a generation of turntablists and gave the great jazz pianist instant street credibility among the burgeoning hip-hop cognoscenti. Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship, SONG OF SIMEON

My vision for this recording was to create a musical journey through the deeper themes of the Christmas narrative. Using ancient canticles, hymns, and folk melodies, I chose eleven pieces to formulate a layered chronology that illustrates the profound, spiritual mystery of the radical biblical story of the birth of Christ. Together the eleven tracks make up a programmatic suite in two parts, organized around a line from the biblical Song of Simeon that describes the miracle of Christmas: “A light to enlighten the nations and the Glory of your people Israel.” (Luke 2:22-35) Continue reading →
