Maria Baptist Trio -][- GATE 29 –Mp3– [Maria Baptist Music, 2012]

Maria Baptist, who was born in 1971 in Eastern Berlin, had the initial dream of becoming a classical pianist. But while secretly listening to Dave Brubeck and Keith Jarrett at the age of fifteen, she discovered a hole new world of music that she had not been exposed to. When the Berlin Wall fell, she took the opportunity to move to the capital city of Jazz itself: New York, where she was able to study with esteemed musicians such as the Jazz orchestra composer Maria Schneider.

At 25 she moved back to the diverse city Berlin, where she went from becoming a Jazz pianist with the ability to play classical, to a music professor who understands how to fire up a Jazztrio. Not only does Maria possess the trance-flow of the 88 keys, but also the ability to passionately lead a Jazz Orchestra at the (Pult). Her talent in regard to her Big Band Compositions was recognized from early on. Already at the beginning of the 90’s, the Berliner Tagesspiegel reports, “Maria Baptist is our big talent in composition”.

Maria has received several international awards and recognitions, and she has given concerts in all of Europe, the USA, South Africa, and Hong Kong. Renowned ensembles such as the RIAS Big Band, the Hess Radio Big Band, the Northern Germany Radio Big Band, the German Ferderal Jazz Youth Orchestra and the Reykjavik Big Band have joined efforts with Maria.

Since 2000 Maria has been serving as a guest professor at the University of Music in Berlin, where she teaches composition, improvisation, and jazz theory.

“Her music is a gift, infused with all the creativity, power, emotion, generosity and warmth that she exudes in life.” –Maria Schneider (composer, N.Y.)
