Jeff Johnson, SUITCASE

Jeff Johnson -][- SUITCASE – [Origin Records, 2012] –

As a teen, bassist Jeff Johnson was inspired by Ernest Hemingway and his way of writing from experience, giving rich, human impressions of events surrounding him. Johnson uses that inspiration as a guide on Suitcase as a way to more vividly convey his life experiences through composition and storytelling.

Having forged a deeply creative improvisational partnership over the last twenty years with saxophonist Hans Teuber, his decision to team here with newer musical partners – pianist Steve Moore and drummer Eric Eagle – creates a lively balance of the well-known and less-known to assure there will always be more chapters to be written.

Euan Stevenson & Konrad Wiszniewski -][- NEW FOCUS –Mp3– [Whirlwind Recordings, 2012] –

“Original music that exists virtually in a world of its own”
(The Herald of Scotland, 5 Stars)

Glasgow based Saxophonist Konrad Wiszniewski joins forces with fellow Scottish compatriot pianist/arranger Euan Stevenson in launching their award winning, genre-bending musical adventure ‘New Focus‘ on Whirlwind Recordings Ltd. Featuring a unique amalgamation of classical string quartet meets jazz quartet plus harp, ‘New Focus’ showcases a cinematic soundscape of through-composed melodies meeting cutting edge improvisation, drawing upon influences from across the musical spectrum. This hefty nine-piece ensemble excitedly features The Glasgow String Quartet, (comprising some of the finest virtuosos from The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and Scotland’s leading string quartet), alongside Stevenson on piano leading the first call drum and bass team of Alyn Cosker (drums) and Michael Janisch (bass), Wiszniewski at the helm on saxophones, and Alina Bzhezhinska on harp. George Schuller’s Circle Wide -][- LISTEN BOTH WAYS –Mp3– [Playscape Recordings, 2012]

Listen Both Ways is the third studio recording by veteran drummer/composer George Schuller’s longstanding quintet, Circle Wide. It follows the band’s two previous Playscape Recordings releases, 2003’s Round ‘Bout Now and 2008’s.

Like Before, Somewhat After, and is the first to concentrate on the leader’s own music. Six of the eight tracks here are original compositions the group has shaped on the bandstand over the past four years. The other two are arrangements of Carla Bley’s “Jesus Maria” and a piece by the severely under-recorded composer/lyricist Margo Guryan called “Edwin”. -[Editorial Review | Amazon]-

Jean-Luc Fillon, ECHOES OF ELLINGTON

Jean-Luc Fillon -][- ECHOES OF ELLINGTON– [Cristal Records, 2012]

Jean-Luc Fillon is one of the rare French musicians with such an original path: bass player, oboist, fond of English horn, he also leads a classical and jazz musician career. Appreciated leader (with Patrice Caratini, Antoine Hervé, Glenn Ferris and Paolo Fresu), he shows real talents of melodist with his favourite instrument, the oboe. Talents that his last two albums Oboa and Flea Market perfectly illustrate. Echoes of Ellington is the result of an exceptional collaboration around original arrangements of the great Duke’s music realized by Jean-Luc Fillon. With his fellow traveller, João Paulo, on the piano, Jean-Luc Fillon marries the english horn lyricism with the warm tone of Glenn Ferris’ trombone. A good rhythm section supports this trio with the drummer Tony Rabeson and the bass player Jean-Jacques Avenel, both important actors of the jazz scene (with Henri Texier, Eddy Louis, Michel Portal for the first one, with Steve Lacy, Mal Waldron, Archie Shepp or David Murray for the latter). A great success, both refreshing and captivating.
