A trio of acclaimed jazz musicians is heading to Colwood on what will be their band’s first tour outside of Ontario and only the second time the group has played outside of Toronto.

Featuring pianist Chris Donnelly, Dan Fortin on bass and Ernesto Cervini on the drums, Myriad has stops in Calgary, Vancouver, Kamloops and Clearwater before playing Hermann’s Jazz Club in downtown Victoria and, most importantly, at a Jazz Vesper at the Church of the Advent in Colwood.

“A band like ours, we need to play and we need to play in as many environments as possible to explore our relationship with the music and explore our relationship with the other musicians,” Donnelly said. Continue reading →

As we approach the upcoming Christmas Season holiday music is beginning to emerge impeccably with expected side effects of cheer that fills the air with a fragrance draped in the spirit of love, peace and hope. Kurt Rosenwinkel -][- STAR OF JUPITER (Double Disc) – [WOMMUSIC, 2012]

Philadelphia-born jazz guitarist/composer Kurt Rosenwinkel first earned attention playing alongside such iconic artists as Gary Burton, Paul Motian, and Joe Henderson. Star of Jupiter marks Rosenwinkel’s first quartet recording in more than a decade, following 2001’s groundbreaking The Next Step. Here the National Endowment for the Arts Composer’s Award-winner offers a contemporary variation on that classic ensemble work with a stellar new band that includes pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Justin Faulkner.

An intricately conceptualized collection of original compositions (all but one previously unrecorded), Star of Jupiter transports listeners on a remarkable journey toward transcendence. Kurt Rosenwinkel once again displays the vision and brave artistry that place him among the most influential and inventive guitarists and composers in music today. -[Editorial Review | Amazon]-

David Gilmore -][- NUMEROLOGY – Live at Jazz Standard –Mp3– [Evolutionary Music, 2012]

Numerology Suite is a musical exploration into the mystical, divine, and spiritual meaning of numbers, which reflect the creation of the Universe and the underlying structure upon which the material world is built. Music is the language of the Universe, and the elements of music – harmony, melody and rhythm, are all expressions of number.

Pythagoras, the father of mathematics, taught that the numbers one through nine represent the universal principles and progressive cycles in life. Here, David Gilmore invites the listener on a musical journey as he interprets these nine musical cycles through sound and vibration.

Stream Tracks From Gamak

The idea of hybridity has been central to the music of alto saxophonist/composer Rudresh Mahanthappa throughout his career. Most prominent, of course, has been his highly original fusion of east and west, jazz mixed with the sounds of his Indian heritage. But that’s too easy and linear a depiction of this open-eared and inventive composer, who has absorbed an enormous variety of music into his thinking and amalgamated it into a singular vision. Pamela York -][- Lay Down This World: Hymns and Spirituals –Mp3– [Jazzful Heart, 2012]

Now in 2012, Pamela offers the listener an exciting journey with Lay Down This World: Hymns and Spirituals, a beautiful collection of sacred music which precedes the 20th century. Each melody has been reharmonized and reinvented into a modern context. Whether playing the ancient Celtic melody of “Be Thou My Vision,” Martin Luther’s famous Reformation hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” or the moving spiritual, “Deep River,” Pamela creates an atmosphere that is sometimes reflective, sometimes rousing, but always breathtaking. Using her tradition as a jazz pianist she tackles these traditional songs with imagination and conviction, proving her salt as a skilled arranger who can inventively breathe new life into these timeless traditionals.
