Henry Cole & The Afrobeat Collective -|- Roots Before Branches –MP3– [Henry Cole And The Afrobeat Collective, 2012] –

Twenty eight year old drummer Henry Cole emerged onto the music scene in old San Juan in 1999 where he studied classical percussion at the Conservatorio de Musica de Puerto Rico. However, it was not until a few years later–while attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston– that Cole’s musical evolution pointed him naturally towards the jazz tradition. He went back home with a new energy and focus and performed as the “house drummer” for the 1st Annual “Jazzboriken” Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He played with such Latin jazz luminaries as Giovanni Hidalgo, Bobby Valentin, Anthony Carrillo, Dave Valentin, Paoli Mejias, currently he is a drummer of Miguel Zenon, David Sanchez and Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez. Max Wild - TAMBA

Max Wild -||- TAMBA [ObliqSound, 2010]

The versatile and talented songwriter/saxophonist Max Wild a native of Zimbabwe arrives just in time to unleash the inescapable rhythms tied to the infectious of colors on his fascinating debut recording “TAMBA” (Dance) on ObliqSound. In truth and spirit Max Wild celebrates the intimacy of this wonderful palette in a unique way with music deeply grounded in the indigenous sounds, textures, shapes, melodies and arrangements that encompasses the pulse and culture of its people. Moreover, Wild infuses these colorful elements accented with the various influences of jazz and funk twisted in the fabric creating a new dimension in music with his own engaging voice.

The enchanting vibe of “Kwatinobva,” embraces the audible expressions of its southern Africa landscape with bittersweet consequences. As the contagious ingredients of this gem groans with excitement it features as Wild describes his chief collaborator vocalist /guitarist Sam Mtukudzi the son of Zimbabwean music legend Oliver Mtukudzi. Unfortunately, his son Sam Mtukudzi passed away back in March of this year due to being evolved in a car accident … this piece also features the charismatic vocals of mbria star Chiwoniso who inscribes her signature into the beginning of this exhilarating music journey. Max Wild - TAMBA

Max Wild -||- TAMBA – [ObliqSound, 2010]

There’s a very good reason why Max Wild’s debut release for ObliqSound is called Tamba. In Shona – the predominant language spoken in Zimbabwe, where Wild spent his youth – Tamba means “dance,” and it’s virtually impossible to be within listening distance of this music and not comply. The relentlessly exhilarating Tamba, which releases June 29 on ObliqSound, blurs the lines between jazz, funk and the indigenous African sounds Max Wild began absorbing even before he first picked up a saxophone at the age of 12. Surrounding himself with an intercontinental cast of characters, Wild fuses the rhythmic and melodic traditions of southern Africa with the sophisticated harmonies and inspired interactivity at the core of contemporary jazz. Tamba is an ecstatic, intensely kinetic celebration that bridges cultural and stylistic divides while keeping feet on the move. Continue reading →

The Souljazz Orchestra | Rising Sun – [Strut Records / Do Right! Music, 2010]

The Souljazz Orchestra - RisingSun

The Souljazz Orchestra picks up where the golden age of soulful music left off: they expand upon the rough and raw grooves of the 1960s and 1970s by taking on an eclectic, genre-bending approach, enriched by musical traditions stemming from both sides of the Atlantic. The resulting sound is enthralling and unique: a potent mixture of funk, soul, jazz, afro and Latin rhythms, supported by an arsenal of dusty vintage keyboards and driven by powerful horn-drenched melodies.

The orchestra was founded in 2002, when a group of young, like-minded musicians started meeting up regularly at some of the hipper downtown clubs in Ottawa. Some had played in jazz combos, others in rhythm & blues bands, others still in African or Latin ensembles. They began making plans to form a new collective that would combine their various musical interests with their particular world view and the Souljazz Orchestra was soon born.

Omar Sosa | Ceremony – [Ota Records – 2010]

Omar Sosa - Ceremony

Ceremony is a major new project, the fruit of pianist-composer Omar Sosa’s first big-band collaboration with composer-arranger-cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, Hamburg’s 18-piece NDR Bigband (North German Radio/Norddeutscher Rundfunk), and the Omar Sosa Quartet, featuring Julio Barreto (drums), Childo Tomas (electric bass0, and Marcos Ilukan (Afro-Cuban percussion). Sosa himself plays piano and marimba. Recorded in two sessions (2007 & 2008) at NDR’s Hamburg studios under the direction of Morelenbaum and Sosa, Ceremony features Morelenbaum’s brilliant arrangements of selections from Omar’s Spirit of the Roots (1999), Bembon (2000), and Afreecanos (2009). It also acknowledges the majesty of the legendary Afro-Cuban big bands of Frank ‘Machito’ Grillo, Chico O’Farrill and Dizzy Gillespie, while extending those revered traditions in a contemporary salute to the expansive universe of world jazz, wherein Sosa himself continues to reign as a joyous, generous, abundant, and essential creative spirit.
