Miguel Zenón -][- Jíbaro –Mp3– [Marsalis Music, 2005]

Want to hear The Next Big Thing from young jazz practitioners? Look no farther. Miguel Zenón is it.

He’s got it all: monster chops on alto sax; a deeply delved folkloric compositional concept (indeed, he’s the Edward Simon of Puerto Rico, with this disc doing for him what La Bikina did for Simon); bandleading acumen far beyond his tender years; and that je ne sais quoi that serendipitously graces fortunate musicians every now and again.

The comparison to Edward Simon seems most apposite to these ears. Just as Simon has been able to evoke the deepest strains of Venezuelan folk musics on his handful of remarkable discs, so Zenón has done with indigenous Puerto Rican musics on this disc. Indeed, some of the numbers sound as if they could be right off of Simon’s La Bikina (e.g., “Punto Cubano,” and “Alguinaldo,” which just goes to show, I suppose, the deep affinity the various Latin musics have with each other). That’s fine by me, as La Bikina is one of my all-time favorite discs. Another apt comparison might be Egberto Gismonti and Northern Brazilian Indian music. Or again, Omar Sosa and what he’s done with Cuban folk music. -[::: Jan P. Dennis | Customer Review | Amazon.com :::]-

Heralded as one of the “Best Jazz Albums of 2011” by NPR’s A Blog Supreme, the critically acclaimed Ninety Miles cast: vibraphonist Stefon Harris, saxophonist David Sánchez, trumpeter Christian Scott along with Rember Duharte and Harold López-Nussa, are captured for their first & only live performance on the release that inspired the original cross-cultural project: Ninety Miles Live at Cubadisco.

Perhaps better than any politician or diplomat, musicians — especially jazz musicians, whose craft is in many ways an improvised form of communication — understand inherently that when we look at each other as individuals and focus on the similarities, the divide between us is actually very short — less than a hundred miles.

Poncho Sanchez and His Latin Jazz Band Live in Hollywoood

Poncho Sanchez and His Latin Jazz Band -][- Live in Hollywood –Mp3– [Concord Picante, 2012] –

For more than three decades as both a leader and a sideman, conguero Poncho Sanchez has stirred up a fiery stew of straightahead jazz, gritty soul music, and infectious melodies and rhythms from a variety of Latin American and South American sources. His influences are numerous, but among the more prominent figures that inform his music are two of the primary architects of Latin jazz – conga drummer and composer Chano Pozo and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. Sanchez pays tribute to these two titans on his new album, Chano y Dizzy!, his 25th recording as a bandleader on Concord Picante, set for release on September 27, 2011. For the first time, Sanchez and Francisco Torres, long time band member (trombone/vocals), join forces to produce the new album. -[Excerpt | Biography]-

As time allows, visit Poncho on his Facebook page.

Perhaps better than any politician or diplomat, musicians – especially jazz musicians, whose craft is in many ways an improvised form of communication – understand inherently that when we look at each other as individuals and focus on the similarities, the divide between us is actually very short – less than a hundred miles.

Vibraphonist Stefon Harris, saxophonist David Sánchez and trumpeter Christian Scott first crossed that divide on their acclaimed two-disc CD/DVD package, Ninety Miles, released June 21, 2011. Recorded during the same trip, their first and only live performance, Ninety Miles Live At Cubadisco, is set for special U.S. digital release September 25, 2012 (international release dates may vary) on Concord Picante. Negroni’s Trio, ON THE WAY

The latest release, On The Way, from Negroni’s Trio, the distinctive unit featuring the father/son team of multitalented Puerto Rican pianist/composer Jose Negroni and his son, the powerful gifted young drummer Nomar Negroni, celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Miami based ensemble that continues to garner international acclaim in jazz and world music circles. Jose Negroni, a disciple of legendary Sonora Poncena pianist Papo Luca and an esteemed educator, renowned for his work at native island’s Conservatory of Music, established the band in 2002 as a vehicle for his unique artistic vision, combining elements of jazz, AfroCaribbean and European classical musics. Utilizing the potent polyrhythmic sensibilities of Berklee educated Nomar Negroni, nominated in 2008 as Best Drummer of the Year by The Latin Jazz Corner, the group realizes a visionary music that is greater than the sum of its individual parts. Francisco Mora Catlett, AFRO HORN MX

Francisco Mora Catlett -][- AFRO HORN MX – [Aace Records, 2012] –

Description: Francisco was proud to present Afro Horn for the first time in New York City at The Stone and Cornelia Street Cafe last year.

Once again he built a strong and appropriate lineup and music for this exciting concept. He managed to align himself with a band of Detroiters: Alex Harding (baritone sax), Salim Washington (tenor sax) and Hakim Jami (bass), all transplanted New Yorkers who began in Detroit. Francisco is a drummer and composer who in the Jazz tradition brings alive the African Heritage in his music and art. The new Afro Horn project is the AFRO HORN MX 2012 CD release, with a new outstanding line up: JD Allen & Vincent Bowens (tenor saxes), Alex Harding (baritone sax), Aruan Ortiz (piano), Rashaan Carter (bass), Roman Diaz (percussion) and Francisco Mora Catlett (drums). -[Excerpt | Biography]- Continue reading →
