Paul Hardcastle, 19 BELOW ZERO

Paul Hardcastle -][- 19 BELOW ZERO – [Universal UK, 2012 | Import]

2012 two CD release from the British keyboardist, songwriter and producer. Paul Hardcastle rose to the top of the charts with his global hit ‘19‘ in the early ’80s. A ground breaking record at the time, Paul’s in-studio experimenting gave him a place in history as a pioneer of electronic production. His classic record ’19’ was #1 in 13 countries and led to the formation of Simon Fuller’s empire, 19 Management.

This double compilation album, which features nine brand new tracks, sees Paul at his best and includes; his sensational collaboration with Marvin Gaye, “Rainforest / What’s Going On”, an as yet unreleased original version of ’19’ and a brand new Sunday Morning mix of the legendary track by Rob Da Bank. The album also introduces his daughter Maxine Hardcastle on vocals. Kick back and take it easy to Disc One with a collection of tracks made to accompany sunrises and sunsets. Disc Two will up the tempo with some smooth tunes perfect for mooching around. Fontana.-[Editorial Review | Amazon.com]-

Wolfgang Haffner, HEART OF THE MATTER

Wolfgang Haffner -][- HEART OF THE MATTER –Mp3– [ACT Music, 2012] –

The title “Heart of the Matter” by Wolfgang Haffner’s new album is definitely more than a play on words a matter of the heart -. Therefore “a matter of the heart” – his job for Germany was highly decorated, winning among others the Echo Jazz 2010 drummer, since He began his career with 18 years in the band of Albert Mangelsdorff. The following work for numerous national and international stars and the participation of over 400 albums testify. But only since he as ACT artist makes his own albums, he feels the “heart of the matter” close: “I no longer feel only as a drummer, but as a universal musician. I compose, arrange, search and enter worlds of sound, which is ultimately my style. ” Continue reading →

Manuel Rocheman -][- Café & Alegria –Mp3– [naïve, 2012] –

Manuel comes from a family of musicians. On his mother’s side, his grandmother is a piano teacher, his grandfather a flautist, his mother plays cello and viola and his aunt the violin. His father, Lionel Rocheman (guitarist and actor), created the “Hootenanny” at the American Center in Paris, where performers came from around the world. As a 10 year old his brother gave him a wonderful record of Oscar Peterson playng solo (it was ‘Tracks’); Manuel already had his own track-record of four years of piano.

Listening to the Canadian virtuoso gave him a great feeling of freedom and made him want to go down the same road. He was entirely won over by the harmony and rhythm of the language of Jazz. Continue reading →

Michael Feinberg, THE ELVIN JONES PROJECT

Michael Feinberg -][ – THE ELVIN JONES PROJECT –Mp3– [Sunnyside Communications, 2012] –

The classic John Coltrane Quartet of the 1960s was one of the most influential ensembles jazz has heard. The group’s influence has continued to spread in the world of contemporary jazz, as new generations of performers have trolled the Quartet’s catalog and those of its illustrious sidemen.

Twenty five year old bassist/bandleader Michael Feinberg was particularly inspired by the core of Coltrane’s rhythm section: drummer Elvin Jones. While he perused his favorite drummer’s catalog, Feinberg found himself drawn to the interplay the legendary percussionist had with a multitude of bassists. Feinberg soon discovered that his favorite bassists had had a significant musical relationship with Jones. The study of these relationships became the root of Feinberg’s project and subsequent recording: The Elvin Jones Project. Continue reading →

Lonnie Liston Smith, COSMIC FUNK & SPIRITUAL SOUNDS

Lonnie Liston Smith -][- Cosmic Funk & Spiritual Sounds: The Flying Dutchman Masters –Mp3– [Ace Records, 2012] –

“I came to London in the 70s and was so pleasantly surprised to see the kids dancing to ‘Expansions’,” recalled Lonnie Liston Smith to me back in 2004. “‘Expansions’ was the first time I really thought about writing lyrics,” he revealed. “I said well, okay, let’s come up with some really enlightening lyrics and at the same time the people can dance to it if they want to.” Regarded as his signature song, ‘Expansions’ – which features lead vocals from Smith’s younger sibling, Donald, over an intoxicating bass-propelled groove – was quickly adopted as an anthem by the UK jazz-funk club scene and appropriately kicks off BGP’s new anthology focusing on the Virginia keyboard player’s Flying Dutchman output. Jan Garbarek, Egberto Gismonti, Charlie Haden -][- Magico: Carta De Amor – [ECM Records, 2012] –

A fascinating set from three strong and contrasting musical personalities: Norwegian saxophonist, Brazilian guitarist-pianist, and US bassist making purposeful and creative music together on this previously unreleased live recording. Carta de Amor documents music captured at Munichs Amerika Haus in April, 1981. Two years on from the much-loved albums Magico and Folk Songs, the trios improvisational empathy and sensibilities were further honed by experiences as a touring group. Continue reading →

During the second half of the 1960s, just after bossa nova had decisively conquered the musical world, the Festival Era dawned in Brazil and was largely responsible for ushering in what is known as the Golden Years of MPB (Brazilian Popular Music). Those festival contests brought countless major music talents to the public’s attention. Among them: composers Ivan Lins and Milton Nascimento, who went on to achieve enormous success at home and abroad, their music admired and interpreted by the foremost jazz musicians and singers in the world.
