Erena Terakubo with Legends -][- NEW YORK ATTITUDE –Mp3– [Four Quarters Records, 2012] –

Erena Terakubo is barely 20 years old, and she has already accomplished what many musicians her age only dream of…Her debut album in North America on Four Quarters Entertainment, features accompaniment by the legends of Jazz, including Kenny Barron on Piano, Ron Carter on bass, Lee Pearson on Drums, and Dominic Farinacci on trumpet.

Erena was born in Sapporo, Japan in 1992, and developed a love for the alto-saxophone, which she began learning at the age of 9. While still in her early teens she started attending workshops by famous visiting jazz musicians such as Herbie Hancock and Tiger Okoshi. When she was less than 16 years old, she attended a five week summer program at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, and her talent earned her a full scholarship to the institution, which she has been attending since 2009. At the same time, her talent and virtuosity was beginning to be noticed in Japan by the press as well as by Japan’s jazz greats like Sadao Watanabe, Terumasa Hino, and American greats like Eddie Gomez, Anthony Jackson, etc. Continue reading →

Jimmy Owens, The Monk Project

Jimmy Owens -][- The Monk Project -(MP3)- [IPO Recordings, 2012 | Review]

As any veteran jazz enthusiast will concur, trumpeter | flugelhornist Jimmy Owens needs no introduction. In his own right, Owen’s a principle player in the stable of his luminaires in mainstream jazz. With his latest endeavor, he pays homage by instinctively transforming the pulse and spirit of the music of the legendary Thelonious Monk composer-pianist extraordinaire on his latest recording “The Monk Project” now available on IPO Recordings.

On this project, Owens tackled this collective by calling in top-shelve talented musicians to record this record: includes the irreplaceable Wycliffe Gordon – Trombone, Marcus Strickland – saxophone, Howard Johnson – Tuba/baritone saxophone, Kenny Barron – piano, and Winard Harper – drums. John Coltrane - A LOVE SUPREME

John Coltrane -[|]- A LOVE SUPREME -(MP3)- [IMPULSE, 1964]

John Coltrane, one of the true masters of jazz, affected every corner of the jazz world when he released this album. The sheer power and beauty of the music breathed new life into jazz and streched the imaginations of many. To this day, A Love Supreme is an album that can be an inspiration to all people around the globe. His music is so extraordinarily powerful – it can make one laugh, cry, get angry, beam in utter rapture, and love and fear God.

To me, on this album John Coltrane not only grabs at every human emotion, but manages to become that emotion. That’s what the album really is – it is raw human emotion, pulsating out of every drum beat, every bass hit, every chord, and every saxophone note. When John Coltrane created this album with his quartet, it almost sounds as if he were possessed by God and became everything the human soul embodies.

While some may claim that the album isn’t good for relaxing after work or on a Sunday afternoon, I would say that exacly the opposite is true. Every time I listen to that album, I am put in a trance, a state so indescribably euphoric that I could exist like that forever.

But alas, the album is only 45 minutes long…

Jeff Hackworth ][ NIGHT OWL [Big Bridge Music]

If you dig cool bop dipped in the stew of soul jazz with a New York attitude, than I’m sure this gem by saxophonist Jeff Hackworth would be an added plus to your music collection. –Rob Young

Jeff Hackworth - NIGHT OWL

Jeff Hackworth -][- NIGHT OWL -(MP3)- [Big Bridge Music, 2011]

New York City saxophonist Jeff Hackworth keeps alive the soulful tenor tradition of such historic greats as Gene Ammons, David “Fathead” Newman, Stanley Turrentine and the still active Houston Person. But rather than just duplicate the past, Hackworth invigorates the music with his own personal sound and modern ideas.

While his last two CDs (How Little We Know and Where The Blue Begins) featured his tenor with a piano trio, here he explores the jazz organ tradition but with a twist. “It’s been awhile since I recorded with organ,” says the saxophonist. “Having vibes instead of guitar in the frontline gives the format a different take. I know Radam and Earl from the local scene. We play gigs together at a club in Newark called Skippers. Radam suggested Jay Hoggard on vibes. He turned out to be a great addition to the session.”

The program begins with Johnny Lytle’s “The Man,” a tune with a simple and direct melody that definitely has an attitude. The one-chord vamp features a passionate tenor solo and fine spots for organ and vibes, showing how much the group can create on a fairly simple but powerful piece.

Bryan Carter - ENCHANTMENT

Bryan Carter [-] ENCHANTMENT -(MP3)- [Imaginate Records, 2011]

Bryan Carter has already begun an incredible career with regular performances at jazz venues in New York and in his native cities of Chicago and St. Louis.

Beginning drums at the age of three, Carter quickly developed a strong passion for music, especially jazz, and by the age of eleven had already studied with jazz masters Louie Bellson, Harold Jones, and Ed Thigpen. Carter’s early performances with Chicago’s South Shore Jazz Ensemble directed by his father, famed educator, Ronald Carter and other conglomerate jazz ensembles served as a catalyst to his developing career. During high school Carter was accepted to the prestigious Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony, the Vail Jazz Workshop, and the Grammy Jazz Ensemble. – BIO
