Myra Melford’s Be Bread -][- The Whole Tree Gone –Mp3– [Firehouse 12, 2010 – Revisited]

Inspired by mevlana rumi’s poems, eastern sounds & wisdom and western modernism/avant-gardism, Myra Melford’s compositions reach to a higher standart again. on horns cuong vu and ben goldberg, on strings brandon ross (intriguing soprano guitar sounds) and stomu takeishi suit well with melford’s cecil tayloresque percussive piano style. all originals are complex but accessible. even, some tracks are “catchy” (1st track “through the same gate”, third one “night” and the sixth “i see a horizon”).

As rumi said “intricate sounds, not words. i catch what i can’t quite make out. fire burning down along the roots, as well as the branches. the whole tree gone”… “the fire music” (like the legendary archie shepp album) burn you as well… the whole sextet well done… -[Ali Haluk | Customer Review | Amazon.com]-

Takuya Kuroda Sextet -][- SIX ACES –Mp3– [Takuya Kuroda, 2012]

With his brilliant tone and soulful, passionate delivery, it’s no wonder that young Japanese trumpeter Takuya Kuroda continues to thrive in New York City, the world’s most competitive arena for live performance. Originally from Kobe, Takuya came to the U.S. in 2003 to study at the New School Jazz and Contemporary Music Program. Since arriving to New York, he has become a fixture on the working musician scene, performing alongside living legends (Junior Mance, Terumasa Hino), acknowledged masters (Greg Tardy, Francisco Mela, Pino Palladino) and the rising stars of his generation (Jose James, Ben Williams, Kris Bowers, Jamire Williams). Takuya can be seen and heard performing at music festivals worldwide (Java Jazz, Rio Das Ostras, River to River, Vitoria Jazz) and at some of the most important venues for live performance in the country (The Blue Note, The Jazz Standard, Radio City Music Hall, The Village Underground). -[Album Notes | CDBaby]-

George Schuller’s Circle Wide -][- LISTEN BOTH WAYS –Mp3– [Playscape Recordings, 2012]

Listen Both Ways is the third studio recording by veteran drummer/composer George Schuller’s longstanding quintet, Circle Wide. It follows the band’s two previous Playscape Recordings releases, 2003’s Round ‘Bout Now and 2008’s.

Like Before, Somewhat After, and is the first to concentrate on the leader’s own music. Six of the eight tracks here are original compositions the group has shaped on the bandstand over the past four years. The other two are arrangements of Carla Bley’s “Jesus Maria” and a piece by the severely under-recorded composer/lyricist Margo Guryan called “Edwin”. -[Editorial Review | Amazon]-

National Youth Jazz Orchestra -][- THE CHANGE –Mp3– [NYJO, 2012] –

NYJO is world-famous as a glittering showcase for the country’s best young musicians. Since NYJO’s founding, by Music Director Bill Ashton OBE in 1965, most of the current generation of top British jazz musicians have risen through its ranks, often becoming established jazz stars whilst still playing with the band. One of NYJO’s aims is to share the talents of exciting young players with as wide a potential audience as possible. Continue reading →

Francisco Mora Catlett -][- AFRO HORN MX – [Aace Records, 2012] –

Description: Francisco was proud to present Afro Horn for the first time in New York City at The Stone and Cornelia Street Cafe last year.

Once again he built a strong and appropriate lineup and music for this exciting concept. He managed to align himself with a band of Detroiters: Alex Harding (baritone sax), Salim Washington (tenor sax) and Hakim Jami (bass), all transplanted New Yorkers who began in Detroit. Francisco is a drummer and composer who in the Jazz tradition brings alive the African Heritage in his music and art. The new Afro Horn project is the AFRO HORN MX 2012 CD release, with a new outstanding line up: JD Allen & Vincent Bowens (tenor saxes), Alex Harding (baritone sax), Aruan Ortiz (piano), Rashaan Carter (bass), Roman Diaz (percussion) and Francisco Mora Catlett (drums). -[Excerpt | Biography]- Continue reading →

“Weiss is representative of a postmodern generation of young composers.” – Thomas Conrad, Jazz Times

Ezra Weiss, OUR PATH TO THIS MOMENT

Ezra Weiss has one of the most active and creative imaginations of any under-40 jazz musician. He was one of the select few nominated in the latest Down Beat International Critics Poll, and discerning jazz fans know Weiss can be counted on to make superior albums. They also know there’s nothing predictable about the album themes or settings that Portland, Oregon-based Weiss uses to showcase his considerable strengths as a composer, as an arranger, and as a pianist.
