Manuel Rocheman -][- Café & Alegria –Mp3– [naïve, 2012] –

Manuel comes from a family of musicians. On his mother’s side, his grandmother is a piano teacher, his grandfather a flautist, his mother plays cello and viola and his aunt the violin. His father, Lionel Rocheman (guitarist and actor), created the “Hootenanny” at the American Center in Paris, where performers came from around the world. As a 10 year old his brother gave him a wonderful record of Oscar Peterson playng solo (it was ‘Tracks’); Manuel already had his own track-record of four years of piano.

Listening to the Canadian virtuoso gave him a great feeling of freedom and made him want to go down the same road. He was entirely won over by the harmony and rhythm of the language of Jazz. Continue reading →

Jan Garbarek, Egberto Gismonti, Charlie Haden -][- Magico: Carta De Amor – [ECM Records, 2012] –

A fascinating set from three strong and contrasting musical personalities: Norwegian saxophonist, Brazilian guitarist-pianist, and US bassist making purposeful and creative music together on this previously unreleased live recording. Carta de Amor documents music captured at Munichs Amerika Haus in April, 1981. Two years on from the much-loved albums Magico and Folk Songs, the trios improvisational empathy and sensibilities were further honed by experiences as a touring group. Continue reading →

Carol Saboya -][- BELEZAS –Mp3– [AAM Music, 2012] –

During the second half of the 1960s, just after bossa nova had decisively conquered the musical world, the Festival Era dawned in Brazil and was largely responsible for ushering in what is known as the Golden Years of MPB (Brazilian Popular Music). Those festival contests brought countless major music talents to the public’s attention. Among them: composers Ivan Lins and Milton Nascimento, who went on to achieve enormous success at home and abroad, their music admired and interpreted by the foremost jazz musicians and singers in the world. Luciana Souza -][- BOOK OF CHET –Mp3– [Sunnyside Records, 2012] –

Something happens to me every time I hear Chet Baker sing. There is something he gets at with his interpretations – a quiet loneliness – that I crave in music. Chet is able to transport me to a place, and to keep me there for the duration of the song.

Through his singing I have become intimate with solitude. This record is an attempt to articulate the world that Chet’s music takes me to… Luciana Souza. Continue reading →

Brian BROMBERG, In The Spirit of Jobim

Brian BROMBERG -][- In The Spirit of Jobim –Mp3– [Artistry Music, 2012] –

Brian was born December 5th, 1960 in Tucson, Arizona. He grew up in a family of musicians and artists. His father and brother played the drums. With all that music around the house, and drums all over the place, it was natural for Brian to start playing the drums as well. Brian was two and a half years old, beating up the furniture and banging on anything that didn’t move. After some years of playing and practicing, Brian began his professional career as a drummer at the age of thirteen. Continue reading →

Melody Gardot, THE ABSENCE

Melody Gardot -][- THE ABSENCE –Mp3– [Verve Music, 2012] –

The Absence is the third record from Grammy-nominated Melody Gardot. Produced by Heitor Pereira, renowned for his work as a film composer (Despicable Me, It’s Complicated, From Prada to Nada) and world-class session guitarist (Sting, Seal, Caetano Veloso), the Brazilian-born, US-based artist shared Melody’s enthusiasm for driving off the beaten path of Western pop, jazz, blues and soul. And he was as adventurous as Melody when it came to inventive sonic ideas.

From the deserts of Morocco to the streets of Lisboa, from the tango bars of Buenos Aires to the beaches of Brazil, The Absence captures the essence of each of these exotic locales, while at the same time remaining quintessentially Melody Gardot. -[Album Description]-

Sabrina Malheiros -][- DREAMING –Mp3– [Far Out Recordings, 2011] –

‘Dreaming’ combines the minimal electronic soul inspired sound of her debut Equilibria with the sweeping organic Brazilian pop of New Morning and traditional sounds of Brazil. Linking past and present Malheiros mixes seductive styles to create a truly original sound for the future. Dreaming is her finest work yet confirming Malheiros as one of the finest female Brazilian songwriters of her generation.

Featuring leading Brazilian musicians including Alex Malheiros (Azymuth); Jesse Sadoc (Marcos Valle); Alfredo Cardim (Joyce); Robertinho Silva (Milton Nascimento) and written and co-produced with Sabrina by partner Daniel ‘Venom’ Maunick (Viper Squad / son of Bluey Incognito) the record finds a beautiful place between nu-Rio, classic Brazil, and the complex melodic electronic music emerging from the post-dubstep and post-drum & bass London soundscape.
