Charles Mingus, THE JAZZ WORKSHOP 1964-1965

Listen to a Streaming Track From The Jazz Workshop Concerts 1964-65

Because this is the 90th birthday anniversary year of Charles Mingus, Sue Mingus called last spring to ask Michael Cuscuna whether he might be interested in issuing some of the unreleased Mingus tapes she had in the archives. It didn’t take long to make such a decision! Charles Mingus was always the most incandescent of jazz’s few true geniuses, and the mid-1960s was undoubtedly one of the most tumultuous periods in his – and America’s – storied history. In Mingus’ case, that personal, social and political upheaval was the recipe for some of his most ferociously creative output, represented here by four intense, combustible concerts by some of his most legendary groups. “Joe Alterman has tremendous taste and a passionate respect for swing and space. His touch on the keyboard is reminiscent of pianists from earlier years who listened carefully, felt expressively and actually cared about what the listener heard. Joe is a remarkable swinger and poet.” —Marc Myers, JazzWax.com

Joe Alterman, GIVE ME THE SIMPLE LIFE

Joe Alterman -][- GIVE ME THE SIMPLE LIFE –Mp3– [Miles High Records, 2012] –

Joe Alterman is a jazz pianist whose playing is a joyous throwback to the keyboard stylists of the 1950s. By merging the patient touch of past pianists with his own contemporary sound, Alterman manages to revitalize the familiar, rekindling memories of why you started listening to jazz in the first place.

Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Joe moved to New York in the fall of 2007 to study music at New York University. He graduated in May of 2012 but is now back to complete his Masters’ degree. While there, he has studied with greats including Don Friedman, Jean Michel-Pilc, Ralph Lalama, Joe Lovano and John Scofield, among others. Continue reading →

John Coltrane - A LOVE SUPREME

John Coltrane -[|]- A LOVE SUPREME -(MP3)- [IMPULSE, 1964]

John Coltrane, one of the true masters of jazz, affected every corner of the jazz world when he released this album. The sheer power and beauty of the music breathed new life into jazz and streched the imaginations of many. To this day, A Love Supreme is an album that can be an inspiration to all people around the globe. His music is so extraordinarily powerful – it can make one laugh, cry, get angry, beam in utter rapture, and love and fear God.

To me, on this album John Coltrane not only grabs at every human emotion, but manages to become that emotion. That’s what the album really is – it is raw human emotion, pulsating out of every drum beat, every bass hit, every chord, and every saxophone note. When John Coltrane created this album with his quartet, it almost sounds as if he were possessed by God and became everything the human soul embodies.

While some may claim that the album isn’t good for relaxing after work or on a Sunday afternoon, I would say that exacly the opposite is true. Every time I listen to that album, I am put in a trance, a state so indescribably euphoric that I could exist like that forever.

But alas, the album is only 45 minutes long…

Greetings fellow jazz enthusiasts, it’s been awhile since I’ve posted music in reference to the “Weekend Spin or Flux Music Essentials.” The other day I was listening to “CELESTIAL PRIDE” by bassist Avery Sharpe from his upcoming album “Running Man” expected release April 12th, 2011. For some reason “EXPANSIONS,” a seventies classic by the incredible keyboardist named Lonnie Liston Smith crossed my mind. Amazingly, “EXPANSIONS” still resonates with such power yet its timeless grace is unmatched even today has the same affect on me as the first time I heard this record in 1975. —Rob Young

Lonnie Liston Smith - Expansions

Lonnie Liston Smith & Cosmic Echoes -][- EXPANSIONS – [RCA Records, 1975]

This man is as passionate, spiritual, melodic and sensuous on the keyboards as the impressionist renoir was on canvas. Lonnie Liston Smith paints a multitude of colors and rainbows in his divine interpretation of improvisation. This second Cosmic Echoes release is truly off the planet, how can we forget the ensemble that catapulted Lonnie Liston Smith into his greatest success in the 70’s, with musicians such as David Hubbard, Cecil McBee, Lawrence Killian, Art Gore, and the unforgettable one two combination of brother extraordinaire Donald Smith.

This album along with Visions of a New World which was the sucessor to Expansions are truly remarkable in style and innovativeness, you can feel the power of his presence as he speaks volumes of spiritual fortitude and oneness, Donald Smith vocals on “My Love” is inspirational and erotic. His vocal talents have not received the accolades he deserves, check Donald Smith out on Lonnie Liston Smith’s album “Renaissance”, the cut is “Starlight and You”, when you hear this cut you’ll see what I mean, this man’s voice is so very erotic, and sensuous with deep spiritual intonations, you just got to give it up. I often wonder what has happen to Donald Smith, I am so happy that his brother included him in the creation of the Cosmic Echoes, and I am so very pleased to see the reissue of such wonderful and unique compositions, treat yourself to a truly wonderful solitary experience and check out who I call the renoir of the keyboards, you will not be disappointed. —Terry Keppard | Amazon Customer Review

Chico Freeman - TRADITION in TRANSITION

Chico Freeman -][- TRADITION in TRANSITION – [Elektra/Musician-Wounded Bird, 1982]

A well-titled set from Chico Freeman – as the reedman definitely takes older modern modes into new territory here – moving in almost Monk-ish space, but with some sharper, bolder tones overall! The album’s a surprising one for an early 80s major label release – a great reminder that some companies were still willing to take a chance on jazz at the time – and Chico’s got a key assortment of players working with him on the date.

In addition to his own tenor, flute, and bass clarinet, the record features Wallace Roney on trumpet, Clyde Criner on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, Billy Hart on drums, and Jack DeJohnette on either drums or piano – shifting about a bit from track to track. Titles include “Mys-Story”, “At A Glance”, “In Spirit”, “The Trespasser”, “A Prayer”, and “Each One Teach One”. –Dusty Groove.com

Charlie Mariano - MIRROR

Charlie Mariano -][- MIRROR – [Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1970]

A seminal electric session from Charlie Mariano – one recorded after his shift from bop-based work into trippier, more psychedelic influences – and one of his few American dates from the time!

The record has Charlie working on soprano and alto sax, with a group that includes Pat Rebillot on electric piano and organ, Tony Levine on bass, and David Spinozza on guitar – all grooving along with the reeds in a stretched-out, tripped-out kind of way – a mixture of jazz and some Eastern influences, but always held together nicely – without some of the overindulgence of some other Mariano records from the period.

Charlie’s solos are still icy as ever, but much freer than on his classic work, and with definite post-Coltrane influences – and titles include “Madras”, “Himalaya”, “Vasi Bindu”, and “Mirror”, which has vocals by Asha Pulthi! –Dusty Groove.com

Dave Burbeck - TIME CHANGES

The Dave Brubeck Quartet -][- TIME CHANGES – [Columbia, 1964]

I still own the original vinyl version of this album and must have played it 200 times over the last 4 decades. While there are lots of pops and scratches, the thing still sounds damn good. The CD version is first rate and has all the dynamics and nuances that make this my favorite Brubeck album. I own it for one reason, “Elementals.” If memory service me, the Eastman Conservatory asked Brubeck to write and perform a piece with their orchestra in celebration. What ensues is a truely inspired performance by both the orhestra and quartet.

As a bonus, the CD contains a shorter version of the piece with just the quartet that precedes the fully orchestrated recording. You don’t have to be a composition major to appreciate the structure that Brubeck created in this exercise in theme development and variation. I still hear things for the first time after all these years. –Robert C. | Music Reviewer Amazon

African American, Freddie Hubbard, Jazz, Trumpet

Greetings jazz lovers, I can’t believe it we’re in the mist of the Superbowl weekend. Due to the per-game activities it’s time to gather up all the essentials to make this festive and most celebrated weekend all worth our time and effort …. Black and Yellow baby, go Steelers!! Subsequently, I’m elated to change the atmosphere a bit and pull from the vault one of my favorite trumpeters the late Freddie Hubbard’s 1962 classic on Blue Note Records “HUB-TONES.” As always, have a safe and prosperous weekend! —Rob Young

Freddie Hubbard - HUB-TONES (The Rudy Van Gelder Edition) - 1962

Freddie Hubbard -][- HUB-TONES – [Blue Note (The Rudy Van Gelder Edition), 1962]

In 1962, Freddie Hubbard was a full time member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, but he still had enough time to record three solo albums — “The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard” for the Impulse label, and “Here To Stay” and “Hub-Tones” for Blue Note. While the former two derive a lot of their sound from that unmistakable Messenger style, “Hub-Tones” draws it feel from two of Hubbard’s collaborations from a few years earlier — “Free Jazz” and “Ole Coltrane.” On “Hub-Tones,” Hubbard utilizes the paths of freedom forged by Ornette and ‘Trane, but stays grounded to the classic Blue Note sound.

Joining Freddie on this October ’62 session are James Spaulding (who unfortunately was never given the chance to record his own album for Blue Note, but was an important contributor to Grant Green’s “Solid,” Bobby Hutcherson’s “Components” and Wayne Shorter’s “Schizophrenia” among others) on alto sax and flute, Herbie Hancock on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums. Hubbard made many great albums for Blue Note, and “Hub-Tones” is as good as any of them. —Michael B. Richman | Amazon.com/Reviewer
