A trio of acclaimed jazz musicians is heading to Colwood on what will be their band’s first tour outside of Ontario and only the second time the group has played outside of Toronto.

Featuring pianist Chris Donnelly, Dan Fortin on bass and Ernesto Cervini on the drums, Myriad has stops in Calgary, Vancouver, Kamloops and Clearwater before playing Hermann’s Jazz Club in downtown Victoria and, most importantly, at a Jazz Vesper at the Church of the Advent in Colwood.

“A band like ours, we need to play and we need to play in as many environments as possible to explore our relationship with the music and explore our relationship with the other musicians,” Donnelly said. Continue reading →

Kurt Rosenwinkel -][- STAR OF JUPITER (Double Disc) – [WOMMUSIC, 2012]

Philadelphia-born jazz guitarist/composer Kurt Rosenwinkel first earned attention playing alongside such iconic artists as Gary Burton, Paul Motian, and Joe Henderson. Star of Jupiter marks Rosenwinkel’s first quartet recording in more than a decade, following 2001’s groundbreaking The Next Step. Here the National Endowment for the Arts Composer’s Award-winner offers a contemporary variation on that classic ensemble work with a stellar new band that includes pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Justin Faulkner.

An intricately conceptualized collection of original compositions (all but one previously unrecorded), Star of Jupiter transports listeners on a remarkable journey toward transcendence. Kurt Rosenwinkel once again displays the vision and brave artistry that place him among the most influential and inventive guitarists and composers in music today. -[Editorial Review | Amazon]-

Wolfgang Haffner -][- HEART OF THE MATTER –Mp3– [ACT Music, 2012] –

The title “Heart of the Matter” by Wolfgang Haffner’s new album is definitely more than a play on words a matter of the heart -. Therefore “a matter of the heart” – his job for Germany was highly decorated, winning among others the Echo Jazz 2010 drummer, since He began his career with 18 years in the band of Albert Mangelsdorff. The following work for numerous national and international stars and the participation of over 400 albums testify. But only since he as ACT artist makes his own albums, he feels the “heart of the matter” close: “I no longer feel only as a drummer, but as a universal musician. I compose, arrange, search and enter worlds of sound, which is ultimately my style. ” Continue reading →

Manu Katché -][- MANU –Mp3– [ECM Records, 2012] –

Eponymously-titled album from Manu Katché. On his fourth ECM disc, Manus unique drumming sets the scene and direction, with compositions and arrangements radiating outward from its rhythm-patterns. His strongly propulsive yet relaxed groove is unlike any other drummers, and it lifts up the soloists. Personnel in the ever-changing Katché band currently includes Norwegians Nils Pettter Molvaer and Tore Brunborg, first heard together on ECM in the band Masqualero in the 1980s: they still play most attractively together.

British keyboardist Jim Watson also makes a strong showing with minimalistically-insistent as well as lyrical piano and thick, swirling organ. Recorded March 2012 in the South of France, and issued on the eve of a major European tour. -[Editorial Review | Amazon]-

Bill Laswell -][- Means of Deliverance –Mp3– [INNERHYTHMIC, 2012] –

Over the course of his illustrious career, visionary bassist-producer Bill Laswell has been one of the most prolific and restlessly creative forces in contemporary music. A sound conceptualist who has always been a step ahead of the curve, he has put his inimitable production stamp on a stunning range of important recordings by such stars as Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, Public Image Ltd, Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, Bootsy Collins, Motorhead, Sting, Carlos Santana, just to name a few. Probably most notable was Herbie Hancock, who co-wrote with Laswell the pivotal 1983 worldwide smash-hit single Rock-It, which introduced scratching to the mainstream, inspired a generation of turntablists and gave the great jazz pianist instant street credibility among the burgeoning hip-hop cognoscenti. Bobo Stenson Trio -][- INDICUM – [ECM Records, 2012] –

Four years after Cantando, a new album from the Bobo Stenson Trio recorded in Lugano last December explores a broad arc of material. Here we find: free playing (the trio has its own, fresh approach to collective improvising), tunes by Bill Evans (Your Story, offered here as a tribute to Paul Motian, for whom this tune was a favourite) and by George Russell (Event VI from Living Time, another piece associated with Evans), Danish composer Carl Nielsens Oft Am I Glad, a Norwegian hymn (in an arrangement by Anders Jormin and folk singer Sinikka Langeland), contemporary composition by Norway’s Ola Gjeilo, a Wolf Biermann protest song, Argentine composer Ariel Ramírezs folkloric La Peregrinación, and more.

Wide-ranging repertoire has become a hallmark of Bobo Stenson recordings. But its not just the eclecticism that is striking: Bobo Stenson, Anders Jormin and Jon Falt take their far-flung sources and make of them an organic music that sings with its own voice. -[Product Description | Amazon]-

Karl Jannuska, THE HALFWAY TREE

Karl Jannuska -][- THE HALFWAY TREE –Mp3– [PJU Records, 2012] –

THE HALFWAY TREE, a Manitoba (Canada) landmark, is a prominent cottonwood tree that stands out on the horizon along Highway 1 between Brandon and Winnipeg. It is also the name of Karl Jannuska’s fourth cd as a leader, which features the beautiful tones of one of Canada’s most talented vocalists, Sienna Dahlen. A collaboration that began four years ago, the repertoire is entirely comprised of the leader’s original compositions while both Karl and Sienna contributed to the lyric writing.

The music sits at the crossroads between several styles representing Karl’s eclectic tastes all the while remaining melodic and groovy. The band includes: Karl Jannuska (drums, compositions, lyrics), Sienna Dahlen (voice, lyrics), Olivier Zanot (alto sax), Nicolas Kummert (tenor sax), Pierre Perchaud (guitars), Tony Paeleman (piano/ Fender Rhodes) & Andrew Downing (5 string cello). -[Album Notes | CDBaby]-
