No Reduce -][- JAYWALKIN’ –Mp3– [NWOG Records, 2012]

New York remains the Mecca of Jazz. The magnetism emanating towards curious and reckless jazz musicians throughout the rest of the world is accordingly potent. The helvetic representatives of young Swiss Jazz Christoph Irniger, Raffaele Bossard and Dave Gisler did not lean back after their first pilgrimage to New York, but brought into life a band with exceptional drum talent Nasheet Waits. Their music portrays a mixture of skyscraper euphoria and the existentialism of pavement gorges. Dave Gisler describes the band as follows: “We wanted to form an explosive band, that would let us realise our musical visions while entrancing an audience. -[Excerpt | Biography]-

Bill Laswell -][- Means of Deliverance –Mp3– [INNERHYTHMIC, 2012] –

Over the course of his illustrious career, visionary bassist-producer Bill Laswell has been one of the most prolific and restlessly creative forces in contemporary music. A sound conceptualist who has always been a step ahead of the curve, he has put his inimitable production stamp on a stunning range of important recordings by such stars as Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, Public Image Ltd, Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, Bootsy Collins, Motorhead, Sting, Carlos Santana, just to name a few. Probably most notable was Herbie Hancock, who co-wrote with Laswell the pivotal 1983 worldwide smash-hit single Rock-It, which introduced scratching to the mainstream, inspired a generation of turntablists and gave the great jazz pianist instant street credibility among the burgeoning hip-hop cognoscenti. Dean Brown -][- UNFINISHED BUSINESS –Mp3– [Dean Brown Music, Inc., 2012] –

The son of a military man from the Bronx and a jazz singer from North Carolina, Dean Brown grew up in a number of locales during his formative years. Born in France, his family moved to the States when he was two then returned to France when he turned 10. Two years later, his family returned to the States once again. It was the summer of love and something new and decidedly different was in the air that would greatly affect Deans path. Continue reading →

Michal Urbaniak, FUSION III

Michal Urbaniak -][ FUSION III –Mp3– [Ubx Records, 2008] –

Very engaging and funky fusion disc from 1975, featuring not only Urbaniak’s soaring gypsy drenched violin but also the other-worldly vocalese of his then-wife Ursula Dudziak (quite an original vocal artist in her own right).

The songs combine a lot of playfully twisty be-bop like melody lines with rip-snorting funk, chiming electric pianos and fiery rock sensibilities, particularly the searing guitars of John Abercrombie (check out the spine-chilling solo on “Metroliner”) and Larry Coryell (who seriously rocks out on “Bloody Kishka”). plus a killer rhythm section of bassist Anthony Jackson with drummers Steve Gadd and Gerry Brown. -[Excerpt | Customer Review | Amazon]-

Eric Erhardt, A BETTER FATE

Eric Erhardt -][- A BETTER FATE –Mp3– [Tapestry Records, 2012 | Review] –

The multi-faceted Eric Erhardt arrives with a harmonious palette of eight flavorful and astute originals pushes the envelope of his voicing’s on what is described as “acoustic fusion” on his debut album “A Better Fate.”

Based in the Mile High City (Denver), Eric was mentored by the legendary sax giant Dave Liebman. Erhardt a veteran in his own right is a notable band leader who wrote and arranged all compositions on this recording. This elegant tapestry consists of a blanket stitched and colored with the fibers of Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, rock and 20th century classic. Continue reading →

LISTEN TO STREAMING TRACKS FROM INTERSTATIC

The genre-defying triumvirate of adept pianist, organist, and composer Roy Powell, guitarist Jacob Young and drummer Jarle Vespestad comes out blazing with a vengeance on InterStatic, their self-titled RareNoiseRecords debut and second release overall, following their ambitious 2011 outing, Anthem. Seamlessly combining elements of jazz, experimental, ambient and rock, the scintillating power trio stretches in typically intense fashion, extending the organ trio tradition established by Jimmy Smith and taken to realms beyond on such groundbreaking recordings as Tony Williams Lifetime’s Emergency! (with Larry Young and John McLaughlin) and John Abercrombie’s Timeless (with Jan Hammer and Jack DeJohnette). Continue reading →

Allan Holdsworth -][- HARD HAT AREA – [Moonjune Records, 2012] –

Bookended by the quasi-orchestral compositions Prelude and Postlude, the music on Hard Hat Area was in some respects simply a logical extension of the ultra-sophisticated and highly idiosyncratic style of jazz-fusion that Allan Holdsworth had developed on his previous seven albums. But in other respects it was quite different, perhaps the most significant difference being that it was recorded by the guitarist’s touring band, which had refined the material by performing it live before entering the studio. ”It was more of a band record than my previous two, which were almost more like solo records,” says Holdsworth.” Continue reading →
