Rick Braun, SWINGIN’ SNOW

Sherman Oaks, CA (8 October 2012): As cool as a winter’s eve, as warm as a holiday dinner with loved ones, and as beautiful as an exquisitely ornamented Christmas tree , Rick Braun’s “Swingin’ In The Snow” is a celebration of “the most wonderful time of the year” featuring some of the contemporary jazz star’s talented friends. Braun produced the elegant 11-song set that will be released by Brauntosoarus Music on October 16th. The merry band of musical elves who joined the trumpeter-vocalist in his workshop include Mindi Abair, David Benoit, Gregg Karukas, Dave Koz, Philippe Saisse, Kirk Whalum, Peter White, a string quartet and a gospel choir led by R&B crooner Jeffrey Osborne. Braun will donate one dollar from each album sale to the Autism Society of America. Continue reading →

Natalie Cressman & Secret Garden -][- UNFOLDING –Mp3– [Cressman, 2012] –

New York-based trombonist/singer/composer Natalie Cressman has won acclaim for her ability to play fluently in a variety of musical styles, and at 21 years old she’s honed a preternaturally worldly conception of her own. Hailed a “velveteen-voiced brass-blower” by the Denver Post, Cressman has sought to stretch across stylistic boundaries with every project she takes on, each time striking listeners with the depth of her musicianship and her ability to blend seamlessly into so many different musical settings. From Carnegie Hall to the House of Blues, from the Apollo to Lincoln Center, Natalie’s versatility and enthusiasm for new music has propelled her into a richly diverse musical career. Dr. Lonnie Smith, THE HEALER

Dr. Lonnie Smith -][- THE HEALER -[Pilgrimage Records, 2012]-

The great B3 organ master and conjurer of sound, Doctor Lonnie Smith, has made some great studio recordings, but he’ll be the first to tell you that his music needs to be experienced live. The release of his brand new live recording The Healer marks the Doctor’s first live recording since his landmark 1970 album Live At Club Mozambique. It showcases the great bandleader reinventing the possibilities of sound along with two young stars – guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg and drummer Jamire Williams.

The Healer puts the listener front row center at a wild ride of a show that seamlessly blends jazz, fusion, hip hop, world music, and of course the B3 funk that Doc helped create. It also marks the launch of Pilgrimage Records, the good doctor’s new completely artist controlled record label. -[Editorial Review | Amazon]-

Kelan Philip Cohran And The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

Phil Cohran was born eighty-five years ago in Mississippi. He grew up in St Louis, post-war home of jazz stalwarts like Clark Terry and Oliver Nelson (both of whom he played with), not to mention a genius called Miles Davis.

In 1950 Cohran moved to Kansas City, where he played trumpet in one of the hardest swing-groups, Jay McShann’s, touring proto-rock’n’roll with the likes of Big Mama Thornton. And Cohran led his own group, the Rajas Of Swing, spivved up in red jackets, grey slacks, blue suede shoes and turbans. Continue reading →

Eric Essix -][- SELF-TITLED –Mp3– [Essential Recordings, 2012] –

In 2000, while signed to Zebra Records, Eric Essix decided to explore the soul, R&B, gospel and country music that he grew up listening to in his home state of Alabama. It was the start of a musical journey that began with “Southbound” followed by “Somewhere In Alabama” on his own Essential Recordings label in 2004 and now has brought him full circle with his latest offering, ”Birmingham”.

Eric recorded his debut album as a solo artist in 1988 for Nova Records called “First Impressions” and 15 albums later he is still making music that moves; that captures the imagination…that touches the emotions. Eric’s last three recordings have been particularly revealing and personal, giving the listener an up close look at the man behind the music and the place he calls home. -[Excerpt | Biography]

Cameron Ross -][- NEW PERSPECTIVE –Mp3– [Cameron Ross Music, 2012] –

Cameron, a native of Osceola, AR, comes from a heritage deeply rooted in God and music. As a child, he always knew that he had a place in music, but didn’t know exactly where. That all changed when he entered the 6th grade. Determined to play the drums, he signed up for middle school band. However, his parents told him that he had to play saxophone.

“I didn’t want to play it because it had too many buttons.” After being tired of always getting last chair in band class, he decided to take his sax home and actually practice it. This resulted in him getting first chair and he has been soaring since. -[Excerpt | Biography]-

“Some of the earliest memories that I can remember are the ones that involve music.” —Cameron Ross
