(Los Angeles, California – December 17, 2012) On Friday, February 1st, NBC will air the 44th Annual NAACP Image Awards at 8pm/EST, celebrating accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film. Contemporary jazz artist and multi-instrumentalist Brian Culbertson has been nominated for Outstanding Jazz Album alongside Jeff Bradshaw, Marcus Miller, Kenny Garrett and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts has announced that Audra McDonald has signed on as the official host of the landmark PBS series Live From Lincoln Center. McDonald will host seven broadcasts from December 2012 through spring 2013 including “The Richard Tucker Opera Gala” on Thursday, December 13, and the New York Philharmonic’s New Year’s Eve Gala, “One Singular Sensation: Celebrating Marvin Hamlisch,” on Monday, December 31. She will also perform in the New Year’s Eve live telecast.

A resolution commemorating the 35th Anniversary of the legendary Freihofer’s Saratoga Jazz Festival and proclaiming June as “Jazz Month” was adopted by the New York State Senate today. Senator Roy McDonald (43rd S.D.), who represents Saratoga County, was the lead sponsor of the measure. Present for the occasion were Marcia White, SPAC’s President & Executive Director, SPAC Board Member Don McCormack, festival producer Danny Melnick, President of Absolutely Live Entertainment, and William Smith, Director of Sales for Freihofer’s, the title sponsor of the festival.

Saxophonists and arrangers given the opportunity to perform at festival, win cash prizes

As part of its mission to foster and support jazz throughout the country, the Detroit Jazz Festival is now accepting submissions for two national competitions – saxophone performance and jazz arrangement – that will be judged by prominent jazz artists and educators, with prize money totaling $5,000 and the chance to perform at the Detroit Jazz Festival on Labor Day Weekend, August 31 through September 3.
