Yuhan Su -][- FLYING ALONE –Mp3– [Inner Circle Music, 2012]

In many ways, Yuhan Su represents the voice of the new generation of jazz musicians. Though she is firmly rooted in jazz tradition, her music is innovative, emotional, cerebral and most importantly, always lyrical. Her compositions and improvisations are uniquely hers, marked with an amalgamation of complexity, intensity and emotional resonance. And though she is capable of blistering technique, she always maintains a sense of melodic lyricism and wonder in her playing. Continue reading →

“…a singer with an innate ability for passionate songwriting that one cannot learn.” – Billboard Magazine

Abiah, LIFE AS A BALLAD

Ever since the untimely departure of Luther Vandross, the American pop scene has been absent of a Black American male balladeer possessed of chops beyond belief, staunch lyricism and emotional maturity. Abiah (pronounced Ah-bee-yah) more than adequately answers the call of that absence with an album and a presence that is sensuous, soulful, honest, grown-up and quite passionate about restoring vocal excellence to the contemporary airwaves.

Who is Abiah? These are the bare facts: he is a seasoned balladeer possessed of a five-and a half octave range; an established vocal coach and former Universal Republic recording artist; and he is of Ghanaian, Cuban, Native American descent, though raised in Rochester, NY. Continue reading →

Josh Ginsburg, Zembla Variations

Brooklyn-based bassist and composer Josh Ginsburg is one of the most sought-after players on the New York jazz scene. He has performed and recorded across Europe, Asia, and the Americas with some of the greatest musicians of our time. Throughout Josh’s bass playing with many different artists, certain qualities emerge as constants: a beautiful tone, a powerful rhythmic sensibility, a mastery of the musical language, and the open-hearted spirit of a true improviser.

In addition to his international career as a sideman, Josh is also an emerging force as a bandleader and composer. Along those lines, Josh is proud to announce the release of his debut recording of all original compositions, Zembla Variations, featuring the amazing band of Eli Degibri on saxophone, George Colligan on piano, and Rudy Royston on drums. The album will be released by Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records on February 7, 2012. On this stunning recording Josh seeks new areas of unexplored musicality, yet he also brings to his music a deep love for our shared musical traditions of melody and song, rhythm, and drama. Scenes -[|]- SILENT PHOTOGRAPHER – [Origin Records, 2011]

After a decade of performing together, the rapport between guitarist John Stowell, bassist Jeff Johnson, and drummer John Bishop has reached what Cadence magazine calls “an enviable tightness.”

Whether performing their intriguing originals or the thoughtful reimaginings of less-done classics, each piece is a ticket to somewhere unique, like a travelogue of where the trio’s members have been and where they would like to go. “…musical creativity at its best.” —Richard Kamins, Hartford Courant. –Origin Records

Willie Jones III - THE NEXT PHASE

Willie Jones III -][- THE NEXT PHASE -(MP3)- [Wj3 Records, 2010]

Willie Jones III is probably the top drummer to see play in 2010. His skills are ridiculous. He reminds me a lot of my favorite all-time drummer, “Philly” Joe Jones. With his latest release “The Next Phase”, Willie shows that he is more than just a great drummer; he’s become a great leader as well. The style of the music is hard bop and post bop. If you’ve been following Jeremy Pelt’s recent releases November and Men of Honor, you’ll find a similar style here to the style of those CDs. Not being a prolific song writer (only 1 track on the CD is written by Jones), Jones does the smart thing and includes some great songwriters in his band. Most notable is Jones’ pianist on the album Eric Reed who contributes two killer songs to the CD (The Thorn & Another Time).

This CD was my first exposure to Reed and I’m extremely expressed with his technique, style, and writing. He reminds me of McCoy Tyner and Wynton Kelly. His play is a constant highlight throughout the CD. Trombonist Steve Davis is also impressive throughout the CD wrote the last song on the CD (Up the Middle). Two of the tracks (3 + 7) feature vocals. I’m not a fan of either of these tracks. Fortunately the rest of the CD is so good, it more than makes up for it. —Scott Williams | Customer Review @ Amazon.com
