During the second half of the 1960s, just after bossa nova had decisively conquered the musical world, the Festival Era dawned in Brazil and was largely responsible for ushering in what is known as the Golden Years of MPB (Brazilian Popular Music). Those festival contests brought countless major music talents to the public’s attention. Among them: composers Ivan Lins and Milton Nascimento, who went on to achieve enormous success at home and abroad, their music admired and interpreted by the foremost jazz musicians and singers in the world. Todd Bishop GROUP -][- LITTLE PLAYED LITTLE BIRD –Mp3– [Origin Records, 2012] –

“Freewheeling and solid.” —C. MICHAEL BAILEY, ALL ABOUT JAZZ

All About Jazz referred to Todd Bishop’s Serge Gainsbourg tribute, “69 Annee Erotique,” as “…beautiful decadence, brilliant and bright.” Here, he features a set of rarely heard gems from Ornette Coleman’s catalog on his latest in a series paying respect to some of the music world’s more iconic and intriguing figures.

In this free-spirited session, they cover compositions such as “Friends And Neighbors,” “Comme Il Faut,” “Country Town Blues,” along with a beautifully unraveling, and unavoidable, take of the classic “Lonely Woman,” drummer Bishop is joined by the brilliant Brazilian pianist Weber Iago, bassist Bill Athens, and a frontline of Richard Cole and Tim Willcox, each playing multiple woodwinds except the alto saxophone. -[Origin Arts]-

Ranee Lee is a true Renaissance woman. In addition to a career as a jazz singer that has taken her to stages in front of her fans around the globe, Lee is also a songwriter, award-winning actress, children’s book author, and jazz educator. Despite that resume, Lee actually got her start as a dancer. In an interview with Peter Kerr of The Montrealer, she said, “I was dancing with an Afro-Cuban touring dance troupe. We were in a small town in Ontario, and had to extend the length of our performance to fill the time allotted for the show. I was chosen to sing some songs with the band to fill that time, and the audience loved it! Continue reading →

“Her songwriting abilities continue to demonstrate a laudable maturity.” – Chris Loudon, JazzTimes

“Though vocalist Halie Loren has made a name for herself by bringing her warm and inviting alto to bear on a mixture of pop and jazz classics, she has received far too little recognition in the United States.” – Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

“I revere Duke Ellington, but I didn’t want this to be a reverent album,” Joe Jackson says of The Duke, his new tribute to American jazz giant Ellington.

Joe Jackson, THE DUKE

Joe Jackson -][- THE DUKE –Mp3– [Razor & Tie Label, 2012] –

True to Jackson’s word, The Duke is a decidedly unconventional salute to Ellington, demonstrating the timeless brilliance of his classic compositions while showcasing Jackson’s sublime skills as an arranger, instrumentalist and vocal interpreter. Although it’s only the second time he’s recorded an album not comprised of his own compositions, The Duke is nonetheless a deeply personal project for Jackson, whose longstanding affinity for Ellington’s pioneering spirit has served as a key inspiration throughout his own three-decades-plus career. Jazz Soul Seven, IMPRESSIONS OF CURTIS MAYFIELD

Jazz Soul Seven -][- IMPRESSIONS of CURTIS MAYFIELD –MP3– [BFM Jazz, 2012 | Review] –

There were numerous legendary and unsung artists that climb their way to the top of the music charts nationally and internationally during the sixties. The multi-faceted soul music icon Curtis Mayfield was one of them. Mayfield humbly who stood tall among the giants in the industry and paved the way for an army of inspiring singers-songwriters.

Mayfield was considered the cornerstone of Chicago Soul with his signature falsetto vocal style charm and memorable songs like Gypsy Woman, People Get Ready, and Keep on Pushing that he recorded with the fabulous Impressions. It was only a matter of time before he moved onto to re-invent himself as a solo artist and soon developed a new flavor of soul, creative funk, and movie soundtracks like “Superfly” in the seventies. Eric Reed, THE BADDEST MONK

Eric Reed -][- The Baddest Monk – [Savant, 2012] –

Pianist Eric Reed has claimed that Monk’s music makes it possible “to travel way out there, if you’re willing to go where it can take you.” On The Baddest Monk, Reed and his colleagues prove more than willing. The Monk classics recorded here illustrate the breadth of Reed’s thought on one of the most idiosyncratic of jazz composers.

Reed and his ensemble are able to penetrate to the very core the Monk’s writing, dismantle its component parts and reassemble them so that they contain not only the essence of Monk, but that of the players themselves. -[Amazon | Editorial Reviews]- Continue reading →

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB.com) – Curtis Mayfield ranks among the most important and influential artists of the past century, the definition of soul both as leader of the Impressions and as a solo artist. As a singer and musician, his pure tone melted hearts and as a songwriter, he was peerless, a voice of African-American pride as well as a man whose insights into the ways of the heart spoke to generations.

Jazz Soul Seven, IMPRESSIONS OF CURTIS MAYFIELD

Mayfield’s impact on artists of all persuasions is incalculable, and jazz musicians have long found much in his words and melodies to inspire new interpretations. Impressions of Curtis Mayfield (available everywhere April 17th) is a new collection of a dozen reimaginings of some of the late, great soul man’s most potent compositions, recorded by a collective of jazz aces calling themselves the Jazz Soul Seven: Terri Lyne Carrington–-drums, Russ Ferrante—piano, the late Master Henry Gibson—percussion, Bob Hurst—bass, Wallace Roney—trumpet, Phil Upchurch—guitar, and Ernie Watts—saxophone. Each of these players is a giant in his or her own right, who brings to these timeless songs a lifetime of experience and knowledge. Produced by Brian Brinkerhoff, co-produced by Upchurch, and recorded by Andy Waterman at The Bakery in North Hollywood, California, Impressions of Curtis Mayfield forces a rethink of just how rich and durable is the catalog of Curtis Mayfield, who passed away in 1999, more than nine years after suffering a paralyzing accident that never stopped him from spreading his message.
