Jaiman Crunk, ENCOUNTERS

Jaiman Crunk -][- ENCOUNTERS – [Origin Records, 2012 | Review] –

It’s been awhile since I reviewed any new music; although it’s been a challenging experience it was beginning to be more like work then enjoyment. With that said, on my return, I’m pleased to share with you a new artist named Jaiman Crunk. He’s a guitarist/composer who emerges on the music scene with the blossoming fruits of his latest endeavor simply titled “ENCOUNTERS” his debt on Origin Records. Continue reading →

Francisco Mora Catlett, AFRO HORN MX

Francisco Mora Catlett -][- AFRO HORN MX – [Aace Records, 2012] –

Description: Francisco was proud to present Afro Horn for the first time in New York City at The Stone and Cornelia Street Cafe last year.

Once again he built a strong and appropriate lineup and music for this exciting concept. He managed to align himself with a band of Detroiters: Alex Harding (baritone sax), Salim Washington (tenor sax) and Hakim Jami (bass), all transplanted New Yorkers who began in Detroit. Francisco is a drummer and composer who in the Jazz tradition brings alive the African Heritage in his music and art. The new Afro Horn project is the AFRO HORN MX 2012 CD release, with a new outstanding line up: JD Allen & Vincent Bowens (tenor saxes), Alex Harding (baritone sax), Aruan Ortiz (piano), Rashaan Carter (bass), Roman Diaz (percussion) and Francisco Mora Catlett (drums). -[Excerpt | Biography]- Continue reading →

Letizia Gambi -][- Introducing Letizia Gambi –Mp3– [Jando Music, 2012] –

Born in Naples, south Italy, Letizia grew up in an artistic family. Opera singers, musicians, actors, writers. Her mother started also as singer, her uncle is an Opera’s Tenore and her father, an artist and a Jazz lover. Also her brother Gianpaolo has become an appreciated and talented actor and anchorman. As every big old style Italian family, they spent together all the occasions and holidays performing and singing together, the traditional Neapolitan-Italian repertoire, playing music, dancing, acting and changing what usually would be a normal family gathering into some extraordinary theatre shows with a lot of fun and a professional mood… Continue reading →

Early Praise For Fortune Songs:

“Debut album from soprano saxophonist Lovell-Smith, and I’m not sure she could’ve made a more impressive introduction. A quintet rounded out with trumpet, piano, drums, and bass. Tantalizing melodies, a deft use of dramatic tension, and tunes that nicely straddle the divide between new- and old-school jazz. I’m thrilled with this album, and happy to make it my Pick of the Week.”

Kelan Philip Cohran And The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

Phil Cohran was born eighty-five years ago in Mississippi. He grew up in St Louis, post-war home of jazz stalwarts like Clark Terry and Oliver Nelson (both of whom he played with), not to mention a genius called Miles Davis.

In 1950 Cohran moved to Kansas City, where he played trumpet in one of the hardest swing-groups, Jay McShann’s, touring proto-rock’n’roll with the likes of Big Mama Thornton. And Cohran led his own group, the Rajas Of Swing, spivved up in red jackets, grey slacks, blue suede shoes and turbans. Continue reading →

Music aficionados, I’m positive at some point you’ve heard “Walkin’ in Rhythm, Happy Music and Rock Creek Park.” I’ve enjoyed keyboardist Kevin Toney’s music since his days with The Blackbyrds a cross-over band from D.C. Due to his spiritual transformation, as a composer Toney clearly approaches his compositions with more distinct lyricism that’s mature, captivating and sophisticated artistically. “NEW AMERICAN SUITE” is the latest in his current trilogy of recordings encompasses a cluster of sublime moods, textures and intricate melodies I sure music lovers will adore more and more with repeated spins. –Rob Young | Urban Flux Media

The Kevin Toney 3, NEW AMERICAN SUITE

The Kevin Toney 3 -][- NEW AMERICAN SUITE –Mp3– [K-Tone Enterprises, 2012] –

In recent years America has seen a paradigm shift toward the manifestation of real, forward thinking change – especially in the minds of people of faith. Keyboard master and composer Kevin Toney was already in the midst of a personal metamorphosis when these positive changes began to take shape. The fruits of Kevin’s and his country’s evolution are both in beautiful, vibrant evidence on his latest recording, New American Suite. This dynamic music also marks the debut of his new band The Kevin Toney 3: Kevin Toney on piano, Michael Bradford on bass and Chris Coleman on drums. Continue reading →

3 BRAVE SOULS -][- Self-Titled –Mp3– [BFM Jazz, 2012 | Review] –

Perhaps equally as important to their friendship, 3 Brave Souls collectively has an unparalleled common denominator. In fact, at various intervals early on they played integral roles and develop their character as musicians by performing with the legendary Miles Davis. Therefore, they unexpectedly became beneficiaries of their tenure with Miles. As a result, these astute alumni essentially qualify to make reoccurring deposits to others and frequent withdrawals from this expansive template of innovative, progressive and creative music rooted in the spirit of love, imagination and passion to play music.
