A new Clayton Brothers release is always a family affair – not only due to the actual blood ties of siblings John and Jeff Clayton and son/nephew Gerald, but in the sense that quintet-mates Terell Stafford and Obed Calvaire have become part of the Claytons’ extended musical family through years of touring and recording. Greetings jazz aficionados, I hope all is well with you on this fab Friday! Funny thing, time truly flies when you’re having fun. With that said, the summer heat making its way through the peaks and valleys of the southern states all the way to the west coast and just think spring hasn’t even made its debut yet. As the music continues to blossom, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you guys for making “The Urban Flux” part of your jazz journey. Without you and the music this journey in this crazy world of blogdom would not be worth traveling! Until next time, be safe, blessed and do have a great weekend. —Rob Young | Urban Flux Media

Darryl Reeves, MERCURY

Darryl Reeves -][- MERCURY –Mp3– [Epic Life Music Group, 2012] –

Darryl Reeves was born in Jackson, MS to a musical family. He grew up in Miami, and quickly adopted the alto saxophone as his instrument. Moved by hip-hop samples originating from jazz, Reeves was led to being influenced by Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. Reeves graduated from Jackson State University with a Bachelors in Music Education, and subsequently released The Activator (2002), a straight-up gem that solidified his place as an emerging player. Reeves then completed his Masters of Music at the University of New Orleans. Continue reading →

Bobby Watson | Live & Learn – [Palmetto, 2002]

Bobby Watson - Live & Learn

Bobby Watson may be the unluckiest person in the history of jazz, a music littered with unlucky people. Watson, who came up with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, where he was musical director for a number of years, went on to record four or five great records for the Italian Red label, including one of the best all-time jazz recordings ever, Love Remains. Capitol took notice and signed his group, Horizon, which may have been the best post-bop unit in the history of jazz, to a multi-record contract. And though they produced some great records, esp. The Inventor, they never really hit it big. From there he linked up with Kokopelli, Herbie Mann’s abortive attempt to make jazz accessible to the masses, and made the creditable but critically scorned Urban Renewal, which did nothing to advance his already sinking career. Then he made Quiet As It’s Kept, back on Red, a really fine record, which promptly sunk like a stone.

Pete Robbins | Waits & Measures – [Playscape Recordings, 2006]

Pete Robbins - Waits & Measures

New York-based saxophonist/composer Pete Robbins joins Playscape Recordings roster with his second release as a leader, Waits & Measures. Recorded and mixed by Jamie Saft, Robbins’ sophomore effort features his working sextet. “On this new recording,” writes critic Mark F. Turner in the liner notes, “Robbins clearly has an acute understanding of jazz as an art form, but more importantly he is striving to create music that moves in new directions.”

The group has gelled into a tight unit, creating music based on the ebb and flow of spontaneous invention. Robbins has again impressed me with is abilities as a musician, a serious composer and an artist with a vision to create music that is progressive, yet always engaging.
