Lionel Loueke -][- HERITAGE – [Blue Note Records, 2012] –

On August 28, the acclaimed West African jazz guitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke will release Heritage, his dynamic third Blue Note album, which was co-produced by label mate Robert Glasper. Heritage finds Loueke who was hailed by The New York Times as a gentle virtuoso exploring a more electric sound with a new trio featuring Derrick Hodge on electric bass and Mark Guiliana on drums. The album presents seven new compositions by Loueke, two by Glasper, and one co-written by the two. Glasper also contributes piano and keyboards to six tracks, while singer Gretchen Parlato provides background vocals on two tracks. Continue reading →

Terje Rypdal, ODYSSEY IN STUIDO & IN CONCERT

Terje Rypdal -][- Odyssey: In Studio & In Concert –Mp3– [ECM, 2012] –

Terje Rypdal’s Odyssey: In Studio & In Concert is a very special release. It includes not only the complete Odyssey album (recorded 1975) on CD for the first time (restoring the long track Rolling Stone to its rightful place), but also a full disc of previously unreleased material on which Terje Rypdal’s Odyssey band is augmented by the Swedish Radio Jazz Group in a 1976 live performance of Rypdal s suite Unfinished Highballs. The signature hook by the legendary alto-saxophonist David Sanborn has positioned him to be a pillar in the jazz community. I understand, some may dispute this, nonetheless he’s undeniably one of the most prominent voices in today’s music. If you dig contemporary jazz, than this two disc collection of music is well-worth the cash for those of you who may not have these hand-picked songs by Sanborn for this project. –Rob Young | Urban Flux Media

Michal Urbaniak, FUSION III

Michal Urbaniak -][ FUSION III –Mp3– [Ubx Records, 2008] –

Very engaging and funky fusion disc from 1975, featuring not only Urbaniak’s soaring gypsy drenched violin but also the other-worldly vocalese of his then-wife Ursula Dudziak (quite an original vocal artist in her own right).

The songs combine a lot of playfully twisty be-bop like melody lines with rip-snorting funk, chiming electric pianos and fiery rock sensibilities, particularly the searing guitars of John Abercrombie (check out the spine-chilling solo on “Metroliner”) and Larry Coryell (who seriously rocks out on “Bloody Kishka”). plus a killer rhythm section of bassist Anthony Jackson with drummers Steve Gadd and Gerry Brown. -[Excerpt | Customer Review | Amazon]-

Chick Corea and Gary Burton, HOT HOUSE

Chick Corea and Gary Burton -][- HOT HOUSE – [Concord Jazz, 2012] –

Pianist Chick Corea and vibraphonist Gary Burton became a collaborative team almost by accident. Their first musical encounter took place at a jazz festival in Germany in 1972, when they performed together in a spur-of-the-moment encore. The results were so satisfying not only to the audience but to the artists themselves that the two musicians reconvened in a recording studio a couple months later to record the intricate yet highly melodic Crystal Silence, their first of several collaborative studio projects. Stephane Wrembel, ORIGINS

Stephane Wrembel -][- ORIGINS –Mp3– [Water Is Life Records, 2012] –

French-born, New York-based composer/guitarist Stephane Wrembel has released one of the great instrumental albums of the past decade. “Origins” finds the guitar virtuoso at the top of his form, leading his band and the listeners through a journey from the Gypsy Camps of France guided by the towering presense of hero Django Reinhardt, to the Arabian Desert, to the smokey jazz clubs that once were blessed by the magistery of Coltrane, to the psychedelic shores of Pink Floyd.

All originals, Wrembel weaves his many influences in these 14 tunes into a fresh sound all his own. Finding that perfect blend between composition and improvisation is the hallmark of great jazz and other instrumental forms, and Wrembel and his mates have found that on this album. These guys can flat out play. –Hasjman | Customer Review | Amazon

Mike Hobart’s Urban Jazz Collective, THE THIRD FISH

Mike Hobart’s Urban Jazz Collective -][- THE THIRD FISH –Mp3– [Another World Music, 2012] –

Mike Hobart is an experienced and soulful saxophonist who has played with the likes of Esther Phillips and Maceo Parker. His first inspiration was the interactive flow of Miles Davis’ 1960s quintet and the edgy freedoms of latter-day Blue Note, but a lot has happened since then.

The Urban Jazz Collective keeps the improv flowing, but add world music flavours and the rhythms of contemporary dance. They deliver a mix of strong originals and well-chosen covers; recent gigs include a live Jazz FM broadcast. Continue reading →

Masta Conga & his new Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra, LAST ODYSSEY

Masta Conga & his new Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra -][- LAST ODYSSEY -[Ubiquity, 2012] –

Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra’s 2012 album, Last Odyssey, finds the French band in fine form, creating music with Jazz as it’s foundation laced with strains of Ethio and Nigerian Funk combined with Latin Percussion and rhythms.

By taking the heaviest elements from each genre and distilling it down to it’s most potent form, the band’s true identity is revealed and sets them apart from their influences. -[Editorial Review]- Continue reading →
