Francisco Mora Catlett, AFRO HORN MX

Francisco Mora Catlett -][- AFRO HORN MX – [Aace Records, 2012] –

Description: Francisco was proud to present Afro Horn for the first time in New York City at The Stone and Cornelia Street Cafe last year.

Once again he built a strong and appropriate lineup and music for this exciting concept. He managed to align himself with a band of Detroiters: Alex Harding (baritone sax), Salim Washington (tenor sax) and Hakim Jami (bass), all transplanted New Yorkers who began in Detroit. Francisco is a drummer and composer who in the Jazz tradition brings alive the African Heritage in his music and art. The new Afro Horn project is the AFRO HORN MX 2012 CD release, with a new outstanding line up: JD Allen & Vincent Bowens (tenor saxes), Alex Harding (baritone sax), Aruan Ortiz (piano), Rashaan Carter (bass), Roman Diaz (percussion) and Francisco Mora Catlett (drums). -[Excerpt | Biography]- Continue reading →

Aruán Ortiz Quartet, ORBITING

Aruán Ortiz Quartet -][- ORBITING – [Fresh Sounds | New Talent, 2012 | Review] –

From my perspective with each musician we’re blessed to encounter they ultimately derive from a different place artistically. With that said, this is obviously a good thing because with each prelude into the abyss of music they will inevitably have a desire to take center-stage, deploy and unleash into the atmosphere creative, unique and enjoyable music similar to but mostly unlike their contemporaries hopefully capture the minds, hearts and souls of music lovers.

Classically trained violist and pianist, Aruán Ortiz born in Santiago de Cuba arrives with his fourth and latest album negotiates his way through and beyond the scope of his previous projects with a transforming palette of sounds land firmly with a translucent and thought-provoking endeavor titled “Orbiting” on Fresh Sounds | New Talent. ARUÁN ORTIZ

Jazz pianist Aruán Ortiz, “the latest Cuban wunderkind to arrive in the United States” (John Murph, http://www.BETJazz.com ), hit the ground running when he came on the American jazz scene in 2003. A classically trained violist and pianist, this Santiago de Cuba native’s sound is as marked by the influence of the contemporary classical composers such as Schoenberg, Ravel, and Copland, as it is by traditional Afro-Cuban sounds and jazz greats such as Bud Powell, Art Tatum, and Thelonious Monk. A major testament to his massive talent, since setting foot in the States Ortiz was quickly called upon to perform and record with artists such as Terri Lyne Carrington, Greg Osby, Cindy Blackman, Esperanza Spalding, Gary Thomas, Wayne Krantz, Rashied Ali, Stefon Harris, Horacio “el negro” Hernández, Giovanni Hidalgo, Lionel Loueke, Jane Bunnett, Jerry Bergonzi and others. Ortiz is currently a member of jazz legend Wallace Roney’s Quintet, Sound of The Future, and is prominently featured on Roney’s new live recording, If Only For One Night (High Note, 2009).
