Charlie Haden with Paul Motian, Geri Allen -][- ETUDES –Mp3– [Soul Note, 1988]

Three of the most sensitive musicians known to the world of jazz have collaborated to make an album that sparkles with creative energy and intuitive sensitivities. From the wonderful rendition of Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman” to some of the lesser known titles, all are done with a high level of expertise and a masterful brilliance. A beautiful album through and through. -[Customer Review | Amazon]-

Edward Maclean’s Adoqué -][- Adoqué –Mp3– [r3w records, 2013]

Edward Maclean has been operating in the deep frequency trade for some time now. Electric bass, double bass, and the occasional fat bass synth are his constant companions. He was born in Ghana, went to school in the far west of Germany and graduated from the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin where he currently lives.

His sound is rich, warm and has a lot of bottom with a little bit of grime in the middle. Holding down the time while keeping songs breathing – always focused on the overall sound – he has established himself as a sought after musical director. Continue reading →

Jeff Johnson -][- SUITCASE – [Origin Records, 2012] –

As a teen, bassist Jeff Johnson was inspired by Ernest Hemingway and his way of writing from experience, giving rich, human impressions of events surrounding him. Johnson uses that inspiration as a guide on Suitcase as a way to more vividly convey his life experiences through composition and storytelling.

Having forged a deeply creative improvisational partnership over the last twenty years with saxophonist Hans Teuber, his decision to team here with newer musical partners – pianist Steve Moore and drummer Eric Eagle – creates a lively balance of the well-known and less-known to assure there will always be more chapters to be written.

Jean-Luc Fillon -][- ECHOES OF ELLINGTON– [Cristal Records, 2012]

Jean-Luc Fillon is one of the rare French musicians with such an original path: bass player, oboist, fond of English horn, he also leads a classical and jazz musician career. Appreciated leader (with Patrice Caratini, Antoine Hervé, Glenn Ferris and Paolo Fresu), he shows real talents of melodist with his favourite instrument, the oboe. Talents that his last two albums Oboa and Flea Market perfectly illustrate. Echoes of Ellington is the result of an exceptional collaboration around original arrangements of the great Duke’s music realized by Jean-Luc Fillon. With his fellow traveller, João Paulo, on the piano, Jean-Luc Fillon marries the english horn lyricism with the warm tone of Glenn Ferris’ trombone. A good rhythm section supports this trio with the drummer Tony Rabeson and the bass player Jean-Jacques Avenel, both important actors of the jazz scene (with Henri Texier, Eddy Louis, Michel Portal for the first one, with Steve Lacy, Mal Waldron, Archie Shepp or David Murray for the latter). A great success, both refreshing and captivating.

Bill Laswell -][- Means of Deliverance –Mp3– [INNERHYTHMIC, 2012] –

Over the course of his illustrious career, visionary bassist-producer Bill Laswell has been one of the most prolific and restlessly creative forces in contemporary music. A sound conceptualist who has always been a step ahead of the curve, he has put his inimitable production stamp on a stunning range of important recordings by such stars as Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, Public Image Ltd, Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, Bootsy Collins, Motorhead, Sting, Carlos Santana, just to name a few. Probably most notable was Herbie Hancock, who co-wrote with Laswell the pivotal 1983 worldwide smash-hit single Rock-It, which introduced scratching to the mainstream, inspired a generation of turntablists and gave the great jazz pianist instant street credibility among the burgeoning hip-hop cognoscenti. Michael Feinberg -][ – THE ELVIN JONES PROJECT –Mp3– [Sunnyside Communications, 2012] –

The classic John Coltrane Quartet of the 1960s was one of the most influential ensembles jazz has heard. The group’s influence has continued to spread in the world of contemporary jazz, as new generations of performers have trolled the Quartet’s catalog and those of its illustrious sidemen.

Twenty five year old bassist/bandleader Michael Feinberg was particularly inspired by the core of Coltrane’s rhythm section: drummer Elvin Jones. While he perused his favorite drummer’s catalog, Feinberg found himself drawn to the interplay the legendary percussionist had with a multitude of bassists. Feinberg soon discovered that his favorite bassists had had a significant musical relationship with Jones. The study of these relationships became the root of Feinberg’s project and subsequent recording: The Elvin Jones Project. Continue reading →
