Bela Fleck & Flecktones - ROCKET SCIENCE

Béla Fleck and The Flecktones -[|]- ROCKET SCIENCE – [Entertainment One Music, 2011]

Béla Fleck is the only musician to be nominated for Grammys® in jazz, bluegrass, pop, country, spoken word, christian, composition and world music categories. His totalcount is 11 Grammys® won, and 27 total nominations. Groundbreaking banjoist, composer, bandleader Béla Fleck has reconvened the original Béla Fleck & The Flecktones, the extraordinary initial line-up of his incredible combo. Rocket Science marks the first recording by the first fab four Flecktones in almost two decades, with pianist/harmonica player Howard Levy back in the fold alongside Fleck, bassist Victor Wooten, and percussionist/ drumitarist Roy Futureman Wooten.

Far from being a wistful trip back in time, the album sees the Grammy® Award-winning quartet creating some of the most forward thinking music of their long, storied career. While all manner of genres come into play from classical and jazz to bluegrass and African music to electric blues and Eastern European folk dances the result is an impossible to pigeonhole sound all their own, a meeting of musical minds that remains, as ever, utterly indescribable. Simply put, it is The Flecktones, the music made only when these four individuals come together. I didn t want to just get together to play the old music, Fleck says. That s not what the Flecktones are about. Everybody s full of life and ideas and creativity. I was intrigued by what we could do that we had never done before. Continue reading →

Victor Wooten

From April 6 to 8, five-time Grammy Award-winning bassist Victor Wooten will be in residence at Berklee College of Music. April 6, Wooten will team up with banjo great and Flecktones bandmate Béla Fleck for a master class, and on April 8 he will deliver the keynote at Berklee’s 17th Annual Liberal Arts Symposium. These events are not open to the public. The media can attend by request.

The master class with Béla Fleck takes place Wednesday, April 6, from 1:15 to 3:00 p.m. at the Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Avenue. Fleck is at Berklee from April 5-6 for the American Roots Music Program’s Banjo Masters Residency, which brings world-renowned banjo players to the college to give students private and ensemble based instruction.

Berklee’s 17th Annual Liberal Arts Symposium takes place Friday, April 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at David Friend Recital Hall, 921 Boylston Street. At the event, Wooten will discuss his book The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music. The book is being used in the Berklee Liberal Arts Department’s Artistry, Creativity, and Inquiry Seminar, and it illustrates that musical gifts mirror those from life, and each movement, phrase, and chord has its own meaning. The 41st Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival, featuring over 60 concerts at 13 venues, set for October 18-December 6, is pleased to announce its 2009 lineup including headline performances by Wayne Shorter Quartet, Chick Corea & Gary Burton, Joe Lovano Nonet, Béla Fleck & The Flecktones, Brad Mehldau Trio, Bill Evans Soulgrass Band, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Allen Toussaint, and Cassandra Wilson.

“Barcelona is definitely one of the places around the world where jazz lives today” opined Joan Anton Cararach, artistic director of the Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival, during a recent interview session with Larry Blumenfeld for Jazziz. With over 60 concerts and lectures scheduled over a month-and-a-half, including newly commissioned works and a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, it is easily discerned that Cararach speaks the truth – jazz lives in Barcelona and is reaching new and existing audiences alike. Jeff Coffin, well-traveled saxophonist/composer, and two-time Grammy Award winning member of Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, rejects all labels and categories other than “music” and “musician.”

The idea for this recording had been bouncing around in my head for a while and I felt like it was a matter of certain elements lining up to make it happen. I was able to get Roy “Futureman” Wooten (also of the Flecktones) on drumset, Kofi Burbridge (Derek Trucks Band) ..boards and flute and Felix Pastorius on electric bass for a short tour in late 2005 and realized almost immediately that, to me, we had something very interesting and special going on as an ensemble. – Jedd Coffin Mu’tet – Myspace.com
