3 Brave Souls, SELF-TITLED

3 BRAVE SOULS -][- Self-Titled –Mp3– [BFM Jazz, 2012 | Review] –

Perhaps equally as important to their friendship, 3 Brave Souls collectively has an unparalleled common denominator. In fact, at various intervals early on they played integral roles and develop their character as musicians by performing with the legendary Miles Davis. Therefore, they unexpectedly became beneficiaries of their tenure with Miles. As a result, these astute alumni essentially qualify to make reoccurring deposits to others and frequent withdrawals from this expansive template of innovative, progressive and creative music rooted in the spirit of love, imagination and passion to play music. Ron Carter Sideman Recruits Bassist Christian McBride, Guitarist Anthony Wilson, Drummer Lewis Nash and Violinist Christian Howes for New Album

Donald Vega, SPIRITUAL NATURE

“… an exceptionally articulate pianist… Vega’s single most distinctive characteristic is his romantic lyricism.” – JazzTimes

Stream Exclusive Tracks from Spiritual Nature

While pianist Donald Vega is beginning to draw attention in jazz circles as Mulgrew Miller’s successor in the Ron Carter Trio, he makes a bold statement as a composer and bandleader on Spiritual Nature. Joined by the regal rhythm tandem of bassist Christian McBride and drummer Lewis Nash, Vega explores the marriage of jazz, Latin and classical music on his auspicious Resonance Records debut. “It’s a dream come true,” says the 37-year-old pianist of the opportunity to record with McBride and Nash. “Spiritually, this is my dream trio.” The core trio is augmented by guitarist Anthony Wilson, violinist and label mate Christian Howes, tenor saxophonist Bob Sheppard, trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos and trombonist Bob McChesney on Vega’s sophomore outing (following 2008’s self-produced Tomorrows, which also featured drummer Nash). Bob Sheppard, Close Your Eyes

Bob Sheppard -][- Close Your Eyes [Challenge Records, 2012]

Going into the recording session for “Close Your Eyes”, Sheppard simply wanted to create a sonically rich interactive jazz experience. One of the distinct advantages of dividing his time between his home base of Los Angeles and New York is that he has forged working relationships with the best musicians on both coasts. Anchoring this session is top NYC drummer Antonio Sanchez (renowned for his work with Pat Metheny, among others), who Sheppard met while collaborating with him on the Billy Childs Jazz Chamber Sextet and Michael BreckerĀ“s Quindectet tours. Completing a powerful rhythm section Sheppard chose the young bassist, Gabe Noel, and split the Piano and organ duties between longtime Friends John Beasley and Alan Pasqua. Other key contributors on this inspired CD are trumpeter Alex Sipiagen, percussionist Walter Rodriguez and guitarist Larry Koonse. Continue reading →

Lounge Art Ensemble - Music for Moderns

Peter Erskine, Bob Sheppard, and Dave Carpenter -][- Music For Moderns – [Fuzzy Music, 2005]

What a terrific CD! Peter Erskine (drums), Dave Carpenter (bass) and Bob Sheppard (brass and woodwinds) get their ya-yas out on this set of hard-swinging jazz, recorded in crystal-clear hi-fidelity chez Erskine. Some of the tunes simmer, some boil, but every one cooks with a playfulness and interplayfulness seldom heard in today’s jazz recordings. This trio’s been together for about ten years (hence the high degree of interplay), and needs to record more often (their last release dates from 1997).

My advice to you, gentle reader: buy a copy for yourself, five or six more for your family and close friends, then ask everyone to e-mail the band members to let them know how many fans they have who adore their music and would love a new CD ASAP! —R Fischer | Review | Amazon.com

Tom Rizzo - Imaginary Numbers (Origin Records, 2010)

Tom Rizzo -][- Imaginary Numbers – [Origin Records, 2010]

Through the richly textured arrangements of longtime collaborator Nick Lane and a stellar new ensemble of some of LA’s finest, veteran guitarist and composer Tom Rizzo creates a swinging and wide-ranging new recording of interesting standards and provocative originals. The top-flight band, including Joe La Barbera, Bob Sheppard & Bob Summers, digs deep on the swinging original opener “B-Like,” paints a lush landscape on the gorgeous J.J. Johnson classic “Lament,” and roasts on the dynamic arrangement of Sonny Rollins‘ “Oleo.”

By supplementing the “Birth of the Cool” instrumentation on Imaginary Numbers with his sleek guitar work, Rizzo adds a twist to that classic ensemble sound and contributes a worthy modern gem to Los Angeles‘ recorded jazz heritage.

Produced by Tom Rizzo & Rick Simpson
