Bianca Rossini - KISS OF BRASIL

Los Angeles, CA – Producer Peter Roberts of BDM Records announced today the release of multi-talented, singer and songwriter Bianca Rossini’s debut album, Kiss of Brasil. The evocative original songs of Kiss of Brasil are destined to become Bossa Nova classics alongside of those written by João Giberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim; the “fathers” of Bossa Nova. Kiss of Brasil’s intoxicating beat is the new extended genre of Brazilian music that’s taking over the cool jazz movement.

Kiss of Brasil offers mesmerizing songs, like: Ipanema Paraiso, Nós Dois, and Corazón de Oro, that are destined to become hits. The album contains songs which were co-written with Marilyn Berglas, Harvey Mason, Peter Roberts, Ken Hirsch, Steve Rawlins and Patrick Lockwood. The album also includes performances by Grant Geissman, Grecco Buratto, Roberto Montero, Marco Tulio, and Sandro Feliciano.

Taking a cue from her friend and co-writer, music critic Don Heckman, Bianca created an album that is sure to fan the flames of romance. She has co-written with Brazil’s leading composer and singer Sergio Santos, Claudio Nucci and Andre Mehmari. In the LA area, Bianca has also written with Dana Kaproff, Jon Gilutin, Don Heckman and Glenn Scott Lacey. Ricardo Silveira – Até Amanhã (Til Tomorrow)

Ricardo Silveira -||- Até Amanhã – [Adventure Music – 2010]

The music of guitarist Ricardo Silveira flows—especially on Até Amanhã/’Til Tomorrow–flows like an interminable river into the proverbial ocean of sound where a world of music mixes and mingles. Yet the idea that he is only marginally Brazilian is anathema. Silveira’s music ripples and gushes with a forceful swagger recalling, at times, the immensity force Rio Negro. That is when his phrases and lines bubble like with liquefying, steamy splendour. At other times the guitarist may interrupt his free-flowing ideas with a dynamic that could well feature a stabbing ferocity of well-chosen single notes, triads or chords. But this only serves to frame and accentuate the fluidity of his vocal phrases.

On this album, Silveira’s musical language is intertwined with superbly arranged woodwinds, reeds and brass instruments that play staccato and legato as the score demands, with concert-hall, almost symphonic coloration. Throughout the proceedings, however, there is the persistent reminder that his beloved country is never far from his thoughts, especially when clarinets and flutes play in counterpoint with percussion that treats the ear to the maddening acceleration of the samba.

Margret - Com Você

Margret -|- Com Você – [Sunnyside, 2010]

“Pure”, “wistful”, “inviting”… This is how All About Jazz New York describes the sound of self-taught vocalist Margret. She names her group Com Você same as the title of her album.

The name means “with you” and, as Cadence magazine writes, “Com Você is with us from start to finish as they pursue dreamy landscapes and fill each one with rhythms that sashay eloquently Bossa nova and samba have been around for quite some time; yet, this ensemble delivers each piece with a freshness that proves memorable.”

The repertoire is heavy with Brazilian music, classic and contemporary.

J. Lorber Fusion - Now is The Time

Jeff Lorber Fusion -|- Now is The Time – [Telarc, 2010]

By the late 1970s, keyboardist and composer Jeff Lorber had become a prominent figure in the new movement known as jazz fusion – a marriage of traditional jazz with elements of rock, R&B, funk and other electrified sounds. Lorber and his band, the Jeff Lorber Fusion, first honed their craft in the Portland, Oregon, club scene and rapidly expanded their reach to a national and international audience via a combination of complex harmonies, unconventional time signatures and compelling rhythms. Various Artists | Far Out Jazz & Afro Funk – [Far Out Recordings – 2010]

Various Artists - Far Out Jazz and Afro Funk

Bringing together driving Afro beat, trademark Latin funk rhythms and American-styled jazz this electrifying collection has been re-mastered for super high quality sound and shows off the field at its best. Far deeper and harder than you’d expect, African roots come through in the infectious batuque drumming, percussion and scatting chants.

Alongside three previously unreleased tunes comes the very best grooving funk from Azymuth’s chart buster ‘Jazz Carnival’ to Sabrina Malheiros’ modern classic ‘New Morning’. This connoisseur’s selection of essential contemporary tracks flows beautifully.

Release Date: 3/1/2010

Alex Malheiros & Banda Utopia with Sabrina Malheiros | The Wave – [Far Out (UK), 2009]

Alex Malheiros & Banda Utopia with Sabrina Malherios

Beautiful grooves from Alex Malheiros — best known for his bass work in Azymuth, but stepping out here in a warm and wonderful set of his own! The groove here really takes us back to the sunny, soulful fusion we first loved when Azymuth hit the scene in the 70s — and Malheiros’ guidance of the groove is really felt strongly in the album’s warm-rolling basslines — a beautiful complement to a lineup that also includes Fender Rhodes, tenor, soprano sax, flute, trumpet, and trombone — plus a bit of occasional vocals from Sabrina Malheiros! Production is wonderful — handled by Daniel Maunick with some of the warmth of his Incognito work — and IG Culture comes in at the end to remix four of the album’s tracks — almost creating a mini-modern suite to complement to the core 70s vibe of the record. Titles include “The Wave”, “Corpo”, “Copa A Noite”, “Solar”, “Sem Pressa”, “Baixo Partido”, “Serenity”, “Uno Esta”, and “4 Eyed Viper” — plus remixes of “The Wave” and “Uno Esta“, the latter of which is a version of the Bobbi Humphrey classic!

Listen too samples of this spellbinding recording by Alex Malheiros.

Marcos Valle | Escape – [Far Out Recordings, 2002]

Marcos Valle - Escape

I was taken by surprise by this album by Marcos Valle, one of the most significant song writers in Brazilian music. I found it curious it was released on the UK Brazilcentric indie label Far Out Recordings that’s also been releasing new recordings from Joyce. This album is rich in melody and arrangement. Key tracks are the intro title track ‘Escape‘ and also ‘On Line‘. Over all this is one album that just flows and Marcos is in top form. I easily have this CD on rotate and it’s one you just want to hear again after a single listen. It’s become one of my favorite albums. I’m looking forward to hearing his latest 2003 release also on Far Out ‘Contrasts‘. Serious Marcos Valle fans may want to hear MPB crooner Emílio Santiago’s 2000 Sony Epic release ‘Bossa Nova‘. He performs a sublime new composition by Valle called ‘Doce Viver‘.

The accompanying DVD is a live Epic promotional performance (in front of an audience of Santiago’s friends – noted celebrities and the cream of Rio society) at the Copacobana Balace. The performance features Valle performing ‘Doce Viver‘. However, back to ‘Escape‘ – it’s a CD that won’t disappoint and only further substantiates Valle’s contribution to Brazilian song. —Brasileirismo
