Ron Miles, QUIVER

Master trumpeter Ron Miles injects his radiant, lyrical tone directly into the lifeblood of American music on his latest release, Quiver. A compelling, inviting trio date with guitarist Bill Frisell and drummer Brian Blade, Quiver combines the singing melodicism of American folk musics, the heightened communication of the most progressive jazz forms, and an entrancing, airy openness. The album finds three genre-defying musical masters at their creative best, lacing easy camaraderie with virtuosic interaction. Continue reading →

Flux Music Essentials

Greeting’s fellow jazz aficionados, I’m back in the mix with another tantalizing yet satisfying blend of original jazz that’s shaken and stirred to perfection from the shelves of “Flux Music Essentials.”

Brian Blade Fellowship

Brian Blade has put together a recording that communicates at a spiritual level. For me, the highlight of the recording is Dave Easley’s pedal steel guitar solo on ‘Mohave’. It’s astonishing, and one of the best solos I’ve ever heard. His passionate guitar is literally crying for joy. John Cowherd’s piano is thoughtful, melodic, and swinging when necessary.

Although there are many textures in this music, it all fits together beautifully. And the musicians all seem to be on the same page. It’s one of those sessions that you can listen to a hundred times, and find something new every time. In other words, this is music that won’t get stale!

Brian Blade’s playing is sensitive, complex, and fiery, as are the compositions. Blade is one of the very best drummers to come along in quite a while.

This is music that hit me on a very deep level. It took 3 or 4 listen’s before I could even understand it, but it was worth it. It’s music that spoke to some very deep feelings within me, and every time I listen to it, I feel inspired. This CD is beautiful, complex, and very interesting. —Kenneth James

Taylor Eigsti, Let It Come to You

Grammy nominated piano wunderkind Taylor Eigsti presents “Let It Come To You,” his new CD of impressive original compositions and imaginatively refreshed standards ranging from Cole Porter to the Eels. This is truly a dazzling display of artistry on the keys that is not to be missed! With this, his sophomore outing, and follow-up release to his 2006 breakout debut CD, Lucky to Be Me, for Concord Records, Eigsti says that this now is “the record that I’ve always wanted to make.” Indeed, Let It Come to You reveals Eigsti as an adventurous artist who, while steeped in jazz tradition, is also committed to advancing it. As he writes in the CD’s liner notes, his compositions “provide a glimpse of the new type of music that I am currently gravitating toward and convey the emotional concepts behind their inspiration.” – Amazon.com
