As a follow up to 2009’s Courageous Hearts, his ingenious melding of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, New Orleans second line and straight ahead swing rhythms, drummer-composer-bandleader Towner Galaher follows a different muse on the aptly-named Uptown!, his paean to Hammond B-3 organ groups that played at places like Small’s Paradise in Harlem during the ’50s and ’60s. “It runs between all the usual suspects like Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff and Lonnie Smith, but there’s also an element of Larry Young in there too,” says Galaher. “With an organ record people right off the bat think guitar, but this album has a different twist because it’s organ plus three horns.” Continue reading →

Brian Lynch - UNSUNG HEROES

Brian Lynch ][ UNSUNG HEROES Vol1– (A Tribute too Some Under-appreciated Trumpet Masters) – REVIEW

Jazz as we know is conceptually a brilliant art form, captured and cultivated properly it can sonically take you places that you may never go otherwise. In this case, we have Grammy winning trumpeter/flugelhornist Brian Lynch. With emphasis based on remnants of cool bop and swing he taps into this wide-open space of tradition to pay homage to a core of what he deems as “UNSUNG HEROES (A Tribute to Some Underappreciated Trumpet Masters).” On his latest album, Lynch honors these relatively unknown figure(s) in jazz in a way that enthusiast can savor these exquisite compositions for years to come.

Out of the gate, Lynch and company swings with authority on “Terra Firma Irma” pen by trumpeter Joe Gordon. As expected, the musicians switch gears relentlessly by trading their infallible solos with grace, precision and compassion to play great music. Continue reading →

Brian Lynch - UNSUNG HEROES

Brian Lynch -][- UNSUNG HEROES – [Hollistic MusicWorks, 2011]

On Unsung Heroes Grammy Award© winning jazz trumpeter Brian Lynch pays tribute to a diverse group of jazz trumpeters, active from the 1940s through the present day, who have produced amazing music as players and composers despite flying below the radar. These great, creative trumpeters honored on Unsung Heroes, through their compositions (in some cases first recordings) and original works, range from masters no longer with us (Tommy Turrentine, Howard McGhee, Joe Gordon, Idrees Sulieman) to those very much alive, well, and swinging (Charles Tolliver, Claudio Roditi). Other trumpet masters represented in this project include Louis Smith and an early influence on Lynch’s own work, Kamau Adilifu (Charles Sullivan). “The multiple subjects of this collection of unpretentious, straight-ahead jazz music are artists without whom the jazz trumpet tradition would be very much impoverished,” says Brian Lynch, “yet who have seemed to fly under the radar of even enthusiastic followers of the music.

They are also players and composers who have touched my soul and influenced me in both areas. Their notoriety ranges from those generally recognized by the cognoscenti to others almost completely unknown except to a few specialists, but they all have one thing in common: their art has been underappreciated.”

Musicians: Brian Lynch – trumpet, flugelhorn; Vincent Herring – alto sax; Alex Hoffman – tenor sax; Rob Schneiderman – piano; David Wong – bass; Pete Van Nostrand – drums; Little Johnny Rivero – congas (1-3, 1-6, 3-5). –Product Description | Amazon.com

Brian Lynch Latin Jazz Sextet | Conclave – [Criss Cross Jazz, 2005]

Brian Lynch Latin Jazz Sextet - Conclave

While waiting for my wife to arrive on a late train, I heard “Across The Bridge” on the local jazz station. I woke up immediately as the tune reminded me of my Berklee College of Music days and a tune that I penned called “Knowledge Of Self“.

I stayed up another hour to learn the name of the tune and the artist, then logged onto Amazon later that morning and purchased the CD. The disc reminded me of Woody Shaw and his great volume of work, as well as Billy Harper and Rene McLean.

The disc stayed in my CD player so long, that my wife begged me to put together a session to play some of the old tunes. Needless to say, I STILL enjoy a rotation or two of ConClave! —Grantmeonewish

Brian Lynch Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra – Bolero Nights (for Billie Holiday)

Brian Lynch Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra | Bolero Nights (for Billie Holiday) – [Venus Records – Japan 2009]

Brian Lynch - Bolero Nights

For a fleeting moment -just one fleeting moment- it appears to be a bit of a stretch putting “bolero” and Billie Holiday together. There appears to be a tad too much “bolero” and not enough “Holiday” on Brian Lynch’s Bolero Nights (Venus Records – Japan 2009). Soon, however, the plaintive wail of Lynch’s trumpet and moan of his flugelhorn and the moody arrangements of “Afinque” start to tie “bolero” and Billie Holiday rather tightly together. Although the music is by no means ponderous and depressing to listen to, there is an elemental sadness to it. This is a masterstroke on the part of Lynch because Billie Holiday embodied something similar as she sang her heart out on so many classics. Mercifully, Lynch also avoids the obvious ones. However, he is masterful in mimicing the voice of the great chanteuse with long “blue” notes -especially in the first chorus of “La Sitiera,” when Lynch draws them out in his inimitable manner with dynamic expression.

Only some of Ellington’s great trumpeters were known to have done this with untouchable effect, and trumpeters such as Larry Cramer and Reynaldo Melian. –Reviewed by Raul de Gamma (Read the full review)
