Cannonball Adderley Quintet, Legends Live

Cannonball Adderley Quintet -][- Legends Live-Liederhalle Stutt (1969) – [Jazzhaus, 2012] –

Adderley achieved immortality in the Miles Davis Quintet with Kind of Blue – and his Something Else is possibly the best of the Blue Note albums. That was the late 1950s. Ten years later Adderley was touring Europe with his own quintet and gave a performance at Stuttgart’s Liederhalle.

Even during the soundcheck the musicians must have sensed the concert hall’s unique atmosphere; that evening would go down as a landmark performance. From soul jazz and blues (Sweet Emma, Why Am I Treated So Bad), to free-form contemporariness (Somewhere) and lollipops infused with canny commerciality (Work Song, Walk Tall), the listener is treated here to the sublime art of the quintet – even at a time when that classic bebop formation was already on the wane. Stefon Harris - The Grand Unification Theory (Blue Note, 2003)

Stefon Harris -\\- The Grand Unification Theory – [Blue Note Records, 2003]

Stefon Harris pulls off a stunning record for Blue Note Records here with his musical epic “The Grand Unification Theory”, a theme-based album observing the cycle of life (both physical and metaphysical). This music is easily accessible on every track, and would have to be viewed as an interaction between freedom and structure. Every selection on this album will one day be viewed as a classic.

Personnel: Stefon Harris (vibraphone, marimba, percussion and voice), Xavier Davis (piano), Tarus Mateen (bass and vocals), Terreon Gully (drums), Kahlil Kwame Bell (African percussion, concert bass drum), Anne Drummond (flute and alto flute), Douglas Purviance (bass trombone), Steve Turre (trombone and shells), Derrick Gardner (trumpet and flugelhorn), Tim Warfield (tenor sax), Mark Vinci (clarinet) and Myles Weinstein (tympani). —Amazon.com Continue reading →

Cannonball Adderley Quintet | In San Francisco | Live [Riverside, 1959] Classic Jazz Essentials

In the late ’50s and early ’60s, Cannonball Adderley enjoyed his greatest popularity as measured by the commercial success of Riverside releases featuring his own group with his brother Nat on cornet. The sessions were frequently recorded live, included spoken introductions by the ebullient leader, presented some “accessible” tunes, and spotlighted at least one real crowd-pleaser (“This Here,” “Sack O’ Woe,” “Jive Samba,” “Mercy Mercy, Mercy”), each later appearing as a hit single.

“In San Francisco” from 1959 not only established the “live action/hit single” formula but is, in its own right, an exemplary session, perhaps superior to the later Adderley brothers’ recordings with pianist Victor Feldman or Joe Zawinul and tenorist/flutist Yusef Lateef. The presence of the hard-swinging Bobby Timmons certainly increased the funk and soul appeal of this Adderley edition (though some of the earlier editions of Adderley brothers’ groups on Mercury and EmArcy are also worth checking out).

With all the craziness going on in the world, it’s refreshing to escape from the realm of reality for a minute and enjoy the music we love “jazz.” On this fab Friday, we’ve got another stellar lineup of recordings to kick off the weekend. ~ Chao

Christian Scott | Live at Newport [Concord Music/2008]

Christian Scott

Live at Newport is the follow up to Christian’s sophomore release, Anthem and his Grammy-nominated debut Rewind That. Both albums received rave reviews upon release in 2007 and 2006 respectively. People Magazine gave Anthem three stars while the LA Times called it “a stunning portrait of a young talent on the rise.” With his debut, Rewind That, Christian landed on Billboard’s “Top Ten to Watch in 2006” list. The LA Daily News raved, “The major-label debut from this jazz trumpeter has been generating no small amount of hype – and in this case, the accolades are deserved. Rewind That is the real deal.” Journalists weren’t the only people praising Christian. In an interview with Downbeat Magazine Chris Botti, who stopped by to see Christian’s Newport performance, said, “Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of CDs by new trumpeters. The only one I like is Christian’s. He’s the new voice in jazz trumpet. I love his point of view. He doesn’t sound like any other young trumpet player.” ~ Amazon.com
