[ACCESSWIRE] NEW ALBUM, “ANOTHER COUNTRY” TO BE RELEASED ON JUNE 5, 2012

Cassandra Wilson

New York, NY – eOne Music proudly announces a new, worldwide deal with Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter/arranger Cassandra Wilson. Wilson’s new studio album, “Another Country,” will be released on June 5, 2012.

Grégoire Maret -][- Grégoire Maret –MP3– [eOne Entertainment, 2012 | Review]

It’s by no accident Harmonicist extraordinaire Grégoire Maret is one of those significant artists that comes into our lives and touches the deepest emotions of our heart and soul with passion, grace and intrigue. Moreover, his “Self-Titled” project on eOne Entertainment Maret’s unwavering and intuitive suites unfolds the opulent tonality, immediate rhythms and compelling melodies driven by his spellbinding creativity as a soloist is exactly what I look for musically.

While growing up in Genève, Switzerland with his Harlem born mother and Swiss born father it had to be a culturally interesting yet inspiring adventure for Grégoire. His parents obviously wanted the best for him and pursued the proper education, influences with an array of musical experiences was vital for his growth. Therefore, Grégoire spend time building his musical bridges at the prestigious Conservatoire Superieur de Musique de Genève and later he decided to undertake jazz studies at New York’s New School University. “He’s one of the most creative musicians around.” – Herbie Hancock

Over the course of the past decade, Grégoire Maret has emerged as a unique and compelling new voice across a wide spectrum of the modern jazz world. That his chosen instrument – the harmonica – is a relative rarity in the genre is one element in his singular sound, but far from the whole explanation. After all, the extensive list of heavy-hitters who have enlisted him for their own projects is unparalleled: Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Cassandra Wilson, and Marcus Miller are some of his most prominent employers, none of whom have the patience to employ novelty for novelty’s sake.

I understand, but I don’t like the way YouTube is pretty much locking out sites and blogs like this one from displaying videos particularly the ones by popular artist.

... the weekend spin

Greetings jazz enthusiast, as always I appreciate you for stopping by the The Urban Flux. While thumbing through some CD’s to spend time with this weekend I stumbled into and amazing recording titled “Cassandra Wilson – Sings Standards“. Fortunately, this jewel fell into my hands at the right moment to reassure me why she is undoubtedly one of my favorite jazz vocalist. With this compilation, you’ll discover Wilson’s gracious, intimate and impressive vocal presence expressive, unique and refreshing. As I hear it, Wilson is expressive and soulful .. she’s a bonified musician and composer at heart. Cassandra brilliantly uses her voice much like a sculpture to shape, bend and articulate these lyrics like no other as she engraved her exquisite signature into this marvelous collection of music. If you love vocals, then do yourself a favor and seriously consider picking it up this classic by Ms. Wilson … you’ll definitely be satisfied with what you hear. —Rob Young | The Urban Flux

Cassandra Wilson - Sings Standards (Verve)

Cassandra Wilson -][- Sings Standards – [Verve, 2002]

I doubt many of Cassandra Wilson’s numerous fans knew her pre-Blue Note (New Moon Daughter and Blue Light Till Dawn) recordings. They were, like the Brooklyn-based approach to jazz from which her and her musicians grew, challenging. The sound was raw with jagged edges exposed and consisted of original material with some standards and eventually an album of them (probably to increase her mainstream exposure). These standards include some of the more challenging arrangements from that period as well as the more traditional jazz quartet arrangements. However, all take on the style of the singer not as deconstructions of the standards but solid interpretations of old friends. If you like Ms. Wilson you will like this collection.

If you prefer some other jazz singer don’t buy it, and if you think no one sings like Ella or Sarah or Carmen or Betty, then you should not be reading this, but please check out the numerous ladies who are doing their own thing and doing it well (too many to list here).

This standards collection is one of the good ones, even if she has moved on in recent recordings to interpret a new set of songs. Check this out — and then check out her new one, Belly of the Sun, for a nice take on what music free of simple labels sounds like. I will have some of that! – –Jeremy S. McElroy | Amazon.com

Flux Music Essentials

Greeting’s jazz connoisseurs, I’m back with yet another intriguing palette of creative music from some of today’s most unique, adventurous and inspiring voices known and unknown artists alike in the world of jazz.

Stefon Harris - African Tarantella

Stefon Harris -//- African Tarantella – [BLUE NOTE, 2006]

Prior to buying this album, I was fortunate enough to hear Stefon Harris and his mallet play the music live. It was one of the best live jazz performances that I have heard lately, and the album is as good or better!

Several things stand out. First is Harris’ obvious virtuosity. I have seen Milt Jackson live and Harris doesn’t take a back seat. He plays the vibes and marimba simultaneously, and at amazing tempo. He isn’t just a virtuoso though, but a very creative arranger and improviser.

The instrumentation is very interesting: viola and cello, trombone, flute, clarinet, drums, bass and piano. This gives the album a wonderful tonal palette. The musicians are wonderful too; Terreon Gully on drums may be the best drummer that I have heard live, and I’ve been lucky enough to hear Buddy Rich, Jeff Hamilton and some of the other top drummers in jazz. Also outstanding is pianist Xavier Davis and trombonist Steve Turre.

My favorite tracks are adaptations of Duke Ellington creations: three numbers from the New Orleans Suite and two from the Queen’s Suite. I am less enamored of Harris’ compositions.

Harris is terrific as an improviser, arranger and performer. He, along with some other young jazz titans, give me comfort that jazz is still alive and vital for years to come. —Rick Loves Jazz | Amazon.com Continue reading →

NEW CASSANDRA WILSON ALBUM, “SILVER PONY,” SET FOR RELEASE NOVEMBER 9 ON BLUE NOTE RECORDS; FEATURING SPECIAL GUESTS RAVI COLTRANE & JOHN LEGEND

Cassandra Wilson - Silver Pony (Blue Note Records, 2010)

Silver Pony, the stunning new album from multiple Grammy Award-winning jazz-pop chanteuse Cassandra Wilson, will be released by EMI’s Blue Note Records on November 9. Wilson, whose remarkable, husky-tinged vibrato has created a trademark sound for her as an artist, will be touring worldwide in support of the release which features special guests saxophonist Ravi Coltrane (“Silver Moon”) and R&B singer-songwriter John Legend (“Watch The Sunrise”).

A unique hybrid live/studio album, Silver Pony moves seamlessly between live recordings from a European tour and studio recordings laid down at New Orleans’ Piety Street Studios. The album features a mix of jazz/pop classics as well as songs newly-written by Cassandra and her band.

Silver Pony draws its title from an experience which Cassandra had as a child and which left an indelible mark in her memory bank, and thus on her career itself. “A man came around my neighborhood in Jackson, Mississippi, with a pony and camera,” she recalls. “You could pay to get your picture taken.” Her brothers declined, but Cassandra was eager. Her mother hesitated-“there were certain things young ladies just didn’t do,” Wilson adds. Continue reading →
