Charnett Moffett - Treasure

Charnett Moffett -|- Treasure – [Motéma Music, 2010]

For musicians, compositions are precious reflections of the soul – aural snapshots of emotions, reflections and conceptions covering broad swaths of human expression and experience. Each offering allows the musician a new opportunity to communicate on varying wavelengths – conscious and subconscious, simple and complex, spiritual and intellectual. Over the course of a fascinating career that began at a very young age, the virtuosic Charnett Moffett has reached profound musical depths and expanded the possibilities of jazz composition and performance through his creative imagination using his instruments as his voice. His approach to music making and recording can be challenging and unorthodox. Yet the rewards for taking on those challenges are often awe-inspiring, revelatory – and can elevate mere songs to Treasure, the title of Charnett’s second project for Motéma Music and his eleventh as a leader. Charnett Moffett - Treasure

Bassist Charnett Moffett is set for his sophomore Motéma Music release, “Treasure,” which is due out on June 8 and features guitarist Stanley Jordan.

About:
Throughout his 25 years on the scene, Charnett Moffett has been a man on a mission. As he states,”I’m trying to bring people together on the planet through music. That’s part of my calling here in life.” That sentiment, coupled with his extraordinary virtuosity on the bass, has resulted in a string of superb outings as a leader as well significant contributions to stellar recordings by such jazz luminaries as Ornette Coleman, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock and Wynton Marsalis.

On May 12, the innovative, multi-directional bassist and prolific composer Charnett Moffett will release The Art Of Improvisation, his 10th solo outing, and his debut as a leader on Motéma Music imprint, also home to jazz leaders Marc Cary, Lynne Arriale, Rufus Reid and Geri Allen. On The Art Of Improvisation, Moffett showcases his extraordinary virtuosity on the upright bass – creating his own universe of singular sounds through innovative bowing techniques and electronic manipulation – while seamlessly switch hitting to fretless electric bass and electric piccolo bass, both of which he plays to beautiful melodic and rhythmic effect.

“The bass is a machine and it has its limitations,” Moffett states. “Believe me, I’ve tried to get things out of it that the instrument won’t give. I guess that’s why I got into the whole effects thing, because I’m always reaching for something else.”
