Donald Vega, SPIRITUAL NATURE

“… an exceptionally articulate pianist… Vega’s single most distinctive characteristic is his romantic lyricism.” – JazzTimes

Stream Exclusive Tracks from Spiritual Nature

While pianist Donald Vega is beginning to draw attention in jazz circles as Mulgrew Miller’s successor in the Ron Carter Trio, he makes a bold statement as a composer and bandleader on Spiritual Nature. Joined by the regal rhythm tandem of bassist Christian McBride and drummer Lewis Nash, Vega explores the marriage of jazz, Latin and classical music on his auspicious Resonance Records debut. “It’s a dream come true,” says the 37-year-old pianist of the opportunity to record with McBride and Nash. “Spiritually, this is my dream trio.” The core trio is augmented by guitarist Anthony Wilson, violinist and label mate Christian Howes, tenor saxophonist Bob Sheppard, trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos and trombonist Bob McChesney on Vega’s sophomore outing (following 2008’s self-produced Tomorrows, which also featured drummer Nash). “The project couldn’t be more aptly titled,” states McBride, reflecting on the win. “That’s exactly how I feel!”

“As one of the most prolific musicians of his generation, Christian has won several GRAMMY® Awards as a sideman but had never been nominated as a leader,” states Denny Stilwell, President of Mack Avenue Records. “When news broke that he received his first nomination for the ambitious big band project, we were thrilled for him. And now that he has won, we are even more thrilled. Congratulations, Christian!” Continue reading →

Pat Metheny - TOKYO DAY TRIP (Live EP)

Pat Metheny -][- TOKYO DAY TRIP – Live EP – [Nonesuch, 2008]

Tokyo Day Trip: Live EP is a collection of 5 tracks recorded live in Tokyo with Metheny’s trio, featuring bassist Christian McBride and drummer Antonio Sanchez. The tracks were recorded at the end of 2004, before the trio went into the studio to record the recently released and highly praised Day Trip.

The tracks were produced, mixed and mastered by Metheny and long time collaborator Steve Rodby. Several tracks were previously available as digital – only downloads; this will be the first time all 5 are available together on CD. The tunes range from intense and animated ( Traveling Fast ), to acoustic ballads ( The Night Becomes You ) to electric fusion ( Back Arm and Blackcharge ). More than just an extension of the studio record, this EP represents the trio at the height of their mastery, live and in the moment. The artwork for the EP, a re-creation of the original Day Trip street scene but a view of Tokyo instead of New York was created by painter Josh George, who hails from Metheny’s hometown, Lee s Summit, Missouri.

Flux Music Essentials … featuring [Corea, Malheiros, McBride, Sanchez & Schneider]

Flux Music Essentials

Greeting’s fellow jazz enthusiasts, I’m back in the mix with another tantalizing yet satisfying blend of original jazz that’s shaken and stirred to perfection from the shelves of “Flux Music Essentials.”

Chick Corea & Friends - Remembering Bud Powell

Chick Corea & Friends -//- Remembering Bud Powell – [Stretch Records, 1997]

Playing is genuinely inspired throughout. No one sounds half-hearted, not one note sounds contrived, and the songs are wonderfully different from each other. The album didn’t immediately serve my ears, but met me halfway; leaving me ‘educated’, and better for having purchased it. It’s true what they say about loving the albums you aren’t initially fond of, because that was true with Remembering Bud Powell. It was above me, but I am growing to appreciate the maturity of the album. Except for Bud Powell (Corea’s invention), all of the songs come from Powell’s songbook. And yet despite their age, the arrangements sound youthful and new, due to the level of enthusiasm displayed by Corea and his friends.

Even Roy Haynes’ drumming sounds richly melodious; subtle changes in volume and rhythm indicate an involvement and ownership of the music which surpass usual expectations of a timekeeper. While listening to the album one becomes aware of the uniqueness of one particular musician, and that is Kenny Garrett. His playing is angular , extremely expressive, and always interesting. His playing on Mediocre is so intricate and unexpected that it must be dealt with-either by hating it or loving it. The unspoken connection made by this group of players is best exemplified during the transitions from solo to solo. I find that my favorite thing to look for in this album, besides the individual sounds of Garrett and Haynes, is the interaction between soloists, and the way each player expects and anticipates the other’s thoughts. This album is too deep to ever become irrelevant or boring. —Amazon.com Continue reading →

TO LAUNCH NEW SHOW ON SIRIUS XM REAL JAZZ CHANNEL APRIL 3 THE LOWDOWN: CONVERSATIONS WITH CHRISTIAN

SIRIUS XM’s Real Jazz channel, SIRIUS channel 72 and XM channel 70, will launch a new show hosted by Grammy® Award-winning bassist-composer and Mack Avenue recording artist Christian McBride. The Lowdown: Conversations with Christian, which will premiere on Saturday, April 3 at 1 pm ET as part of SIRIUS XM’s celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, will be recorded in front of a live audience at various jazz clubs across the country and will feature onstage dialogues and musical duets between McBride and his special guest artists. The first episode, featuring legendary jazz pianist Chick Corea, was recorded at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

Conversations with CHRISTIAN

About The Lowdown: Conversations with Christian, McBride states: “I’m not only excited about being able to expose other facets of my personality, but also exposing different facets of the many diverse guests who will appear on the SIRIUS XM show. Imagine hearing Chick Corea talk about football and to hear Angelique Kidjo imitating a New York cab driver. I mean, this shows special – if I must say so myself.”

Other guests will include Roy Hargrove, Lou Donaldson, Bill Charlap and Angelique Kidjo. The concept for the program derived from a digital downloads duets and conversations project that McBride released on Mack Avenue (available on iTunes) called “Conversations With Christian.” The Lowdown: Conversations with Christian will air every Saturday at 1 pm ET on SIRIUS XM’s Real Jazz.

Christian McBride | Live at Tonic [Ropeadope Records, 2006] Revisited

Ropeadope Records dropped a bomb with bassist Christian McBride’s three-disc release title “Live @ Tonic” recorded at Manhattan’s Tonic Club back in January 2006.

From the first spin, this adventure by McBride encapsulates the essence of what jazz is all about by embracing the freedom of expression! McBride and ensemble intensely swings with an infectious attitude while attached to funk induced rhythms of James Brown while infusing the symmetry of jazz-fusion masked by the band’s astounding play!
