James Falzone -][- Klang: Brooklyn Lines . . . Chicago Spaces –Mp3– [Allos Musica, 2012] –

There is a great musician in New York who has as his bio three words: blah blah blah. Inside this sarcasm there is wisdom, the recognition that describing the work of a musical artist in a couple hundred words is about as easy as picking up mercury. And yet it must be done. Continue reading →

Eric Erhardt, A BETTER FATE

Eric Erhardt -][- A BETTER FATE –Mp3– [Tapestry Records, 2012 | Review] –

The multi-faceted Eric Erhardt arrives with a harmonious palette of eight flavorful and astute originals pushes the envelope of his voicing’s on what is described as “acoustic fusion” on his debut album “A Better Fate.”

Based in the Mile High City (Denver), Eric was mentored by the legendary sax giant Dave Liebman. Erhardt a veteran in his own right is a notable band leader who wrote and arranged all compositions on this recording. This elegant tapestry consists of a blanket stitched and colored with the fibers of Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, rock and 20th century classic. Continue reading →

Alvin Batiste -][- Late –MP3– [Alvin Batiste, 2012] –

Alvin Batiste was a New Orleans clarinetist often referred to as a “Legendary Pioneer of Jazz. He was a true Renaissance man- considered a music pioneer, master teacher, outstanding composer, arranger, an inspiring mentor, as well as a stellar performer. He was also an explorative, avant-garde player who wrote countless musical arraignments but remained under-recognized and under-recorded throughout his career.

Batiste, who was a childhood friend of Ed Blackwell and spent time in Los Angeles in 1956 playing with Ornette Coleman, could have “made it big” as a performer and recording artist. Instead, he chose the life of an educator in Louisiana. Continue reading →

Jeff Lederer - SUNWATCHER

“Lots of modern improvisers try to balance the joy of expressionism with the buoyancy of swing, but few do it with the natural ease of Jeff Lederer. That ease – call it grace if you like – is front and center on the respected reed player’s new Sunwatcher (Jazzheads ). With drummer Matt Wilson , bassist Buster Williams , and keyboardist Jamie Saft on board, Lederer has made a record that suggests exuberance can be delivered in various ways.

A key member of Wilson’s acclaimed quartet, the 48-year-old saxophonist is one of New York’s most versatile horn players. He has accompanied tap dancers at Harlem’s famed Showman’s Club and grooved the five boroughs as part of Jimmy Bosch’s salsa outfit. Regardless of setting, the passionate peal of his sax is always on display. Continue reading →

Frank Glover - Abacus

Frank Glover | Abacus – [Owl Studios, 2010]

Indianapolis-based clarinetist and soprano saxophonist Frank Glover’s musical concept on Abacus is not necessarily involved in counting, or painting by numbers. This is a combination of orchestral sounds paired with soloist Glover and his quartet that goes beyond what would normally be heard in this format. There’s a certain division of labor between Glover and the Wood & Rodin, Inc. 24-piece group conducted by Dean Franke, but their collective vision stretches far past the immediate horizon and into celestial territory. You hear minimalism associated with Steve Reich, elegant jazz à la Duke Ellington, and cerebral tones closer to Igor Stravinsky or Pierre Boulez than J.S. Bach and Johannes Brahms. Anat Cohen

On April 13, Anat Cohen will release her first live album, ‘Clarinetwork: Live At The Village Vanguard‘ on her own Anzic Records. The album was recorded on one evening – July 5, 2009 – during an historic 6-night residency at the legendary venue in which Cohen honored the centennial of clarinet legend Benny Goodman. The album is a musical tour-de-force that finds Anat reworking the Goodman oeuvre as you’ve never heard it before, joined by the stellar rhythm section of Benny Green (piano), Peter Washington (bass), and Lewis Nash (drums). Anat Cohen | Poetica – [Anzic Records, 2007]

Anat Cohen - Poetica

I found out about this CD because it was one of Slate magazine’s top 10 Jazz CDs for 2007. I checked it out further and found out it was also in the Top 20 Jazz CDs of 2007 in the Village Voice Poll. Then I found out the artist, Anat Cohen, won several awards last year from Downbeat Magazine and The Jazz Journalists Association, and was the first woman horn player to lead a band at the Village Vanguard. So, naturally, I was curious to hear it. When I did, I understood why Anat Cohen is one of the fastest rising stars in jazz. She has an unbelievably beautiful tone on the clarinet, an extraordinary gift for interpreting melodies, and most importantly, exquisite improvisational skills. What is most impressive about her, however, is her restraint.

Though she clearly is a virtuoso in terms of technique (I know this from listening to some of her other CDs and, especially, hearing her play live since I bought “POETICA”), she never succumbs to the temptation to show off. She always serves the music. And, in the case of Poetica, it is beautiful music indeed. In fact, I think this is the best CD of its kind I’ve heard since Jim Hall’s “Concierto”. I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates that subtlety can be the soul of a musical masterpiece. —Earscape/Amazon.com
