The Ballard Jazz Festival - 2010

Claudio Roditi

The Ballard Jazz Festival, a cornerstone of the Northwest Jazz and live music scene since 2003, celebrates its seventh season with a 5-day schedule of events, April 21-25, 2009. The festival again teams with the Nordic Heritage Museum to present Saturday night’s mainstage concert featuring performances by the dynamic Brazilian trumpet legend Claudio Roditi, in a quartet setting with Seattle’s iconic pianist / composer Jovino Santos-Neto’s trio, and saxophonist Hadley Caliman with his quintet. The perennially-packed Friday night Ballard Jazz Walk features 15 bands in 11 venues along historic Ballard Avenue and will showcase some of the nation’s finest musicians who happen to make their homes in the Northwest.

The festival kicks off with 2 nights of themed events at Ballard’s Sunset Tavern – Wednesday evening’s Brotherhood of the Drum features bands led by some of the premier drummers of the region, and on Thursday, The Guitar Summit, with internationally-acclaimed guitarists from around the globe. Wrapping up the festival is a Sunday morning Swedish Pancake Jazz Brunch at the Nordic Heritage Museum along with an auto show presented by Washington’s vintage Volvo Sports Club.

Roditi’s New CD Follows His 2009 Grammy-Nominated Brazilliance X 4

Claudio Roditi - Simpatico

In the wake of his acclaimed and Grammy-nominated (in the “Best Latin Jazz Album” category) 2009 Resonance Records release, Brazilliance x 4, trumpet/flugelhorn player Claudio Roditi has created Simpatico, another tuneful showcase for his patented blend of Brazilian samba and bossa nova with straight-ahead jazz. But where last year’s recording included works by such Brazilian legends as João Donato, Durval Ferreira, and Johnny Alf, Simpatico spotlights both Roditi’s playing and his composing talents.

“To me,” Roditi remarks, “the main difference of this album from everything else I have done is that for the very first time these are all my compositions, all twelve of them. There are some new pieces, some a little older, but these are mostly things I haven’t recorded, and some of them I haven’t played live.” Continue reading →

Claudio Roditi | Brazilliance x4 – [Resonance Records, 2009]

Claudio Roditi - Braziliance x4

The repertoire is as classy as the players: a jazz standard (“Tune Up“), five pieces by Brazilian luminaries (Johnny Alf, the late Victor Assis Brasil, Joao Donato, the late Durval Ferreira, and Raul de Souza), and four Roditi compositions. All of these tunes are treated in the best bossa nova tradition, which as this is written is a half-century old and as fresh and vital as ever.

Trumpet & Flugelhorn – Claudio Roditi
Bass – Leonardo Cioglia
Drums – Duduka da Fonseca
Piano – Helio Alves
