KENDRICK SCOTT ORACLE – CONVICTION

Kendrick Scott ORACLE -][- CONVICTION – [Concord Jazz, 2013]

With the 2007 release of The Source – his debut recording as a leader – drummer and composer Kendrick Scott established a reputation right out of the gate as an explorer, someone with a generous measure of wisdom and insight to counterbalance his youth and newcomer status.

Nearly six years later, Scott and his band continue to dig beneath the surface to find the deeper truths in Conviction, their new CD scheduled for release on Concord Jazz on March 26, 2013 (international release dates may vary). As the title suggests, Conviction is the vehicle by which Kendrick and company look past the mundane and examine the motivating forces that propel us through life, even in those times when the greater truths are obscured by the tedium of the everyday. Kurt Elling -][- 1619 Broadway: Brill Building Project – [Concord Jazz, 2012] –

With 1619 Broadway The Brill Building Project, Kurt Elling honors the legendary location that the London Telegraph called “the most important generator of popular songs in the Western world.” Even for the ceaselessly inventive GRAMMY®-winning singer-lyricist, it s a hugely unexpected step, and one guaranteed to further solidify his reputation for bold innovation and superb craftsmanship. The 11-track collection features renditions of classic songs that came out of the Brill Building.

Some of the tunes on 1619 Broadway The Brill Building Project were actually written years after their composers had left the Brill entirely. For example, Elling explains, Carole King, like many other signatories to The Brill Sound, never had an actual office at the Brill. So it doesn t pay to be too didactic about any of this. The Brill is both a physical reality and a mental construct; and because of that, I felt comfortable casting a wide net. Continue reading →

Chick Corea and Gary Burton -][- HOT HOUSE – [Concord Jazz, 2012] –

Pianist Chick Corea and vibraphonist Gary Burton became a collaborative team almost by accident. Their first musical encounter took place at a jazz festival in Germany in 1972, when they performed together in a spur-of-the-moment encore. The results were so satisfying not only to the audience but to the artists themselves that the two musicians reconvened in a recording studio a couple months later to record the intricate yet highly melodic Crystal Silence, their first of several collaborative studio projects. Marcus Miller -][- RENAISSANCE – [Concord Jazz, 2012] –

An album entitled Renaissance is long overdue for the widely acclaimed Renaissance Man Marcus Miller. In among the most enviable careers in music, Miller is a two-time GRAMMY®-winner and the composer/producer of ten critically acclaimed and genre-defying albums (seven studio and three live). Even the most devoted follower may be astonished to realize that Renaissance is only his eighth studio project since his 1983 debut, Suddenly, considering the abundance of occasions Miller’s name has appeared within album credits and that he has dazzled with performances, compositions and productions – in the company of some of the world’s most respected and accomplished players and superstars – from the mid-`70s to the present. Benny Reid | Escaping Shadows | Concord Jazz, 2009 [Reviewed]

Perhaps seizing the moment cherishing love, life, and time given is “encouraging to someone as is oxygen to our soul,” … furthermore, having the opportunity to relish new and stimulating music by the multi-facet saxophonist Benny Reid and his compelling and creative sophomore release “Escaping Shadows” is surely icing on the cake. As I see it, his music rates high on the lists of must haves as jazz releases goes in the 2009 is priceless. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised when I met Reid’s debut album “Findings” back in 2007. As I remember, vividly? … for a moment I mused on why don’t we hear more music by artists of this caliber? From my perspective, there are so many artists are driven to record music to be heard on the radio. Benny Reid apparently doesn’t seem to adhere to this mythology. Thank goodness, stay true to yourself and to the music. A paradigm shift is badly needed, and long, long overdue!

Stefon Harris & Blackout | Urbanus [Concord Jazz,2009]

Stefon Harris and Blackout

Stefon Harris and Blackout

Concord Jazz presents the release of vibraphonist-composer Stefon Harris’ 7th album as a bandleader and Concord debut, Urbanus. The new release picks up where 2004’s Evolution left off in that it features Blackout, his scintillating ensemble that’s as versed in modern jazz as it is with rhythms, melodies and soundscapes associated with R&B, pop, hip-hop and funk. The 10-track-album will be available August 25, 2009.

The GRAMMY-nominated musician has been hailed as “one of the most important young artists in jazz” (Los Angeles Times), and is widely recognized by both peers and critics alike for his innovative compositions, blazing new paths on the vibraphone and marimba. On Urbanus, Stefon Harris and Blackout display a deeper group rapport as well as a more expansive sonic palette as Marc Cary complements the acoustic piano with Fender Rhodes, alto saxophonist Casey Benjamin lends his captivating vocoder work to the proceeding and there’s Terreon Gully on drums and Ben Williams on bass. Harris’ brilliance at broadening textures and colors comes to play with his sensational woodwind and string arrangements on a few of the compositions as well.

Benny Golson | New Time, New ‘Tet [Jazz/Concord Jazz/2009]

Concord Jazz announces the debut of Benny Golson’s “new jazztet,’ a stellar sextet that revives that legendary group’s highly regarded three-horn front line along with its classic, tight ensemble work and sophisticated sound.

Led by Grammy “Lifetime Achievement” award winning saxophonist-composer Benny Golson, this version of the jazztet features heavyweight jazz musicians on each instrument: trumpet master, Eddie Henderson; trombone virtuoso, Steve Davis; the brilliant Mike LeDonne, piano; bassist extraordinaire, Buster Williams; and percussion ace, Carl Allen.

NEW TIME, NEW ‘TET elaborates the traditional jazztet concept. This album’s song choices advance a subtle but genuinely seductive proposal: what if jazz, conventionally defined, is overdue for re-inspection and revision? What if “jazz” and “classical” music are closer in spirit and artistic execution than standard views of their difference comprehend?
