Heralded as one of the “Best Jazz Albums of 2011” by NPR’s A Blog Supreme, the critically acclaimed Ninety Miles cast: vibraphonist Stefon Harris, saxophonist David Sánchez, trumpeter Christian Scott along with Rember Duharte and Harold López-Nussa, are captured for their first & only live performance on the release that inspired the original cross-cultural project: Ninety Miles Live at Cubadisco.

Perhaps better than any politician or diplomat, musicians — especially jazz musicians, whose craft is in many ways an improvised form of communication — understand inherently that when we look at each other as individuals and focus on the similarities, the divide between us is actually very short — less than a hundred miles.

Pete Escovedo, Live From Stern Grove

“What’s up, San Francisco? Are you ready to have a good time?” asks timbales player and band leader Pete Escovedo at the beginning of Live From Stern Grove Festival, his terrific new album that captures a live show he played earlier this year at the legendary 75-year-old San Francisco cultural venue and institution. Escovedo and his band then swing into a breezy rendition of the Tito Puente classic “Picadillo Jam,” and from that moment it’s readily apparent the band can deliver on Escovedo’s promise. Live From Stern Grove Festival is set for digital release September 25, 2012 on Concord Picante/Stiletto Flats Inc. (There will be a physical release in 2013, international release dates may vary.) Poncho Sanchez and His Latin Jazz Band Live in Hollywoood

Poncho Sanchez and His Latin Jazz Band -][- Live in Hollywood –Mp3– [Concord Picante, 2012] –

For more than three decades as both a leader and a sideman, conguero Poncho Sanchez has stirred up a fiery stew of straightahead jazz, gritty soul music, and infectious melodies and rhythms from a variety of Latin American and South American sources. His influences are numerous, but among the more prominent figures that inform his music are two of the primary architects of Latin jazz – conga drummer and composer Chano Pozo and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. Sanchez pays tribute to these two titans on his new album, Chano y Dizzy!, his 25th recording as a bandleader on Concord Picante, set for release on September 27, 2011. For the first time, Sanchez and Francisco Torres, long time band member (trombone/vocals), join forces to produce the new album. -[Excerpt | Biography]-

As time allows, visit Poncho on his Facebook page.

Perhaps better than any politician or diplomat, musicians – especially jazz musicians, whose craft is in many ways an improvised form of communication – understand inherently that when we look at each other as individuals and focus on the similarities, the divide between us is actually very short – less than a hundred miles.

Vibraphonist Stefon Harris, saxophonist David Sánchez and trumpeter Christian Scott first crossed that divide on their acclaimed two-disc CD/DVD package, Ninety Miles, released June 21, 2011. Recorded during the same trip, their first and only live performance, Ninety Miles Live At Cubadisco, is set for special U.S. digital release September 25, 2012 (international release dates may vary) on Concord Picante. Chick Corea and Gary Burton, HOT HOUSE

Chick Corea and Gary Burton -][- HOT HOUSE – [Concord Jazz, 2012] –

Pianist Chick Corea and vibraphonist Gary Burton became a collaborative team almost by accident. Their first musical encounter took place at a jazz festival in Germany in 1972, when they performed together in a spur-of-the-moment encore. The results were so satisfying not only to the audience but to the artists themselves that the two musicians reconvened in a recording studio a couple months later to record the intricate yet highly melodic Crystal Silence, their first of several collaborative studio projects. Erin Boheme, WHAT A LIFE

Erin Boheme -][- WHAT A LIFE – [Heads Up, 2012] –

When you’re young, five or six years can make all the difference in the world. Sometimes the road is rocky, sometimes it’s full of good fortune. Most times it’s a little of both. But no matter what the terrain, the traveler who keeps her eyes and ears – and her heart – open to the world will inevitably learn something along the way.

Every girl dreams. But, in the case of relationships – dreams don’t always work out in the way one might have imagined. More often than not, they don’t. Erin Boheme is every girl. For the first five years of her “dating” life, the right things just didn’t seem to materialize – but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Often times getting to the dance might be easy, but it never guarantees you a successful dance. Continue reading →
