Al Jarreau and the Metropole Orkest – Live

Al Jarreau and the Metropole Orkest – Live –Mp3– [Concord Records, 2012] –

Al Jarreau has little interest in boundaries or preconceived limitations. Since the mid-1970s, this versatile singer has applied his distinctive and instantly recognizable vocal style – a unique combination of lyrical swing and captivating vocalese – to a broad spectrum of musical genres. With this eclectic approach, he has earned much success along the way – enough to position him as the only vocalist in history to claim Grammy Awards in the three distinct genres of jazz, pop and R&B. “Christian Scott isn’t your typical jazz musician…The trumpet phenom is creating jazz for a younger generation…”
– New York Magazine

Christian Scott, CHRISTIAN A TUNDE ADJUAH

On July 31, 2012, Edison Award winning trumpeter-composer-producer-bandleader Christian Scott releases his compelling new album, Christian aTunde Adjuah. The follow-up to his critically-acclaimed Yesterday You Said Tomorrow isan inspired and provocative two-disc, 23-track collection. With the artist’s trumpet at the heart of most of the tunes, the album features reflective ballads, light and dreamy soundscapes, guitar-edged and rock-inflected cookers, trumpet ecstasies as well as clarion calls and anguished wails.

An intrepid explorer, Scott ups the ante on his new double album Christian aTunde Adjuah, continuing to delve into uncharted jazz territory. Scott’s band consists of guitarist Matthew Stevens, drummer Jamire Williams, bassist Kris Funn and pianist Lawrence Fields (whose piano sound is often spiced for effect by using paper on the instrument’s strings). Scott also recruited guests tenor saxophonist Kenneth Whalum III, alto saxophonist Louis Fouche IIII, and trombonist Corey King. Continue reading →

Lee Ritenour - 6 String Theory

Lee Ritenour -|- 6 String Theory – [Concord Records, 2010] – Release Date: 29 Jun 2010

It’s hard to believe that 2010 marks 50 years since Lee Ritenour starting playing the guitar, setting in motion a career that legends are made of. A career that has earned him 19 GRAMMY® nominations, a GRAMMY Award, numerous #1 spots on guitar polls, A Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian SJ Awards, and the prestigious “Alumnus of the Year” award from USC. During his illustrious career, he has recorded over 40 albums, with 35 chart songs and was a founding member of the group Fourplay, considered the most successful group in contemporary jazz. As a young guitarist his diverse musical style became the foundation of over 3,000 sessions, covering a broad spectrum of artists ranging from his first session at 16 with the Mamas and Papas, to Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Simon & Garfunkel and Frank Sinatra. On his latest endeavor, 6 String Theory, Ritenour celebrates the instrument that has allowed him this blessing, the guitar; -by producing and assembling a star-studded tribute with the greatest and soon- to- be greatest guitarists of our time. Peanuts Portraits marks the 60th anniversary of cartoonist Charles Schulz’s enduring characters

Vince Guaraldi - Peanuts Portraits

By the 1960s, cartoonist Charles Schulz’s Peanuts – featuring Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy and Linus Van Pelt, Schroeder and other alternately heartwarming and heartbreaking characters – had become a popular fixture in newspaper comics for more than a decade. But when pianist Vince Guaraldi began composing and recording music for various Peanuts television specials in the mid-1960s, the characters suddenly gained an entirely new dimension of humanity and emotional resonance that endures to this day.

The TV specials kept coming, and with them came more music from Guaraldi, each piece capturing the infectious personality of a specific character within the strip. By the ’70s, Guaraldi’s compositions for Peanuts – originally released on Fantasy – had become the universally recognized musical backdrop to the sometimes comic, sometimes tragic characters who made up Schulz’s universe. Willie Bobo | Lost And Found [Concord Picante, 2006]

Willie Bobo

Willie Bobo

Willie Bobo was one of the great Latin percussionists of his time, a relentless swinger on the congas and timbales, a flamboyant showman onstage, and an engaging if modestly endowed singer. He passed away in 1983.

Sometime in the mid 90s, Willie Bobo’s son, Eric Bobo (conga player who’s toured and recorded with hip hop supergroup Cypress Hill since the early 90s) teamed up with producer Mario C. (most famous for his seminal work with the Beastie Boys) to sort through piles of his father’s reel to reel tapes which he discovered one day in his mother’s closet. The result? Hours of unreleased recordings from Willie Bobo’s heyday – including alternate takes of “Broasted or Fried,” “Soul Foo Young” & “Dindi” (a Bobo favorite and Jobim classic). These versions (recorded in the early 70s) – tastefully blessed and mastered by Mario C. from the original multi-track tapes – hit harder, and present these tunes anew. ~

Taylor Eigsti, Let It Come to You

Taylor Eigsti | "Let It Come to You"

At the mere age of twenty-three this young and gifted pianist-composer-band leader Taylor Eigsti has been truly blessed with tons of accolades and frankly deservingly so since his Concord Records debut “Lucky To Be Me.” In 2008, he explores new frontiers in jazz by leaping forward into the future with his compelling sophomore release titled “Let It Come To You” produced by Eigsti and Chris Dunn.

As an artist, it always helps to surround oneself by a wealth of talent whether playing live or recording in the studio. On this gathering, Taylor calls his working ensemble lead by guitarist and collaborator Julian Lage, Reuben Rogers on bass and Eric Harland on drums with such special guests Joshua Redman on tenor saxophone, and Edmar Castaneda on Colombian harp are primary torch barriers on this session to invoke their enormous skill set into these 11 wonderfully played and arranged original and reinvented standard(s) compositions.
