Miguel Zenón and Laurent Coq -][- RAYUELA –Mp3– [Sunnyside, 2012] –

The music on this recording was inspired by the book Rayuela, by the Argentine writer Julio Cortázar. This masterpiece has long provided me with an immense amount of inspiration and ideas, forging a possibility for what art could be: a medium of boundless freedom, both for the creator and for the audience. The narrative in Rayuela takes place both in Paris and Buenos Aires, and it was indeed this “”French-Latin American”” connection that ignited the idea for a collaboration between Laurent and myself. We have become close friends through the years but had never had the chance to collaborate on a musical project before (aside from the casual performance here and there). Working on Rayuela seemed like the perfect opportunity. Continue reading →

Florian Weber, BIOSPHERE

Borders present challenges for artists. Jazz musicians, who, in the past century, re-constructed the evolution of musical history, continue to be particularly open to the possibilities offered by those challenges. Melody, harmony and structure have been questioned stylistically and artistically. Rhythm, however, has been a comparatively fixed element, even when the free era re-directed it from a linear approach towards more of a pulse. So when the curious musician looks for borders to explore and cross, rhythm and meter still carry many secrets worth investigating. Continue reading →

Alon Nechushtan - WORDS BEYOND

In this culturally diverse idiom called jazz, I’m blessed with the opportunity to become acquainted with new music by a fascinating young pianist/composer named Alon Nechushtan. Prior to his sophomore effort “Words Beyond” this New England Conservatory grad like many of his peers landed feet first in the “Big Apple” with hopes of developing and strengthening his skill and voice by playing with a variety of top-shelve musicians after moving to New York in 2003.

With nine originals available, it was evident Alon needed to call upon two supreme players who have the agility, sensitivity and the unique synergy needed to record and complete “Words Beyond.” Therefore, he summon drummer Dan Weiss and Francois Moutin to shape the tones, define the structure and melodies of this wonder banquet of intriguing pieces. Alon appears to approach his compositional voicing’s based upon the blueprint and elements of traditional jazz. With the opener “Muppet Shock,” this gifted player/composer eloquently sets the atmosphere and foundation for “Words Beyond.” Continue reading →
