The signature hook by the legendary alto-saxophonist David Sanborn has positioned him to be a pillar in the jazz community. I understand, some may dispute this, nonetheless he’s undeniably one of the most prominent voices in today’s music. If you dig contemporary jazz, than this two disc collection of music is well-worth the cash for those of you who may not have these hand-picked songs by Sanborn for this project. –Rob Young | Urban Flux Media

David Sanborn - CLOSER

David Sanborn -][- CLOSER – [Verve, 2005]

Perhaps, I couldn’t resist the urge to satisfy my thirst once again to hear another dose of authentic and soulful horn playing so I decided to revisit the vintage sounds by one of my favorite alto saxophone players David Sanborn.

Released in 2005 on VERVE RECORDS, CLOSER is a tapestry of challenging music that’s slowly stirred with mellow tones executed and shaped by one of the most punctual and distinctive alto players in the business. With this project, Sanborn serves up note for note layers of soulful and attractive melodies with help by his formidable ensemble connects with their timeless cohesiveness without distributing the poetic flow of the music.

CLOSER opens with the infectious groove called “Tin Tin Deo.” On this delectable piece Sanborn peels back layers with his signature lyricism, nuances and brash timbre to unveil a snazzy tune fans have grown to love. Followed by the addictive “Senor Blues,” it bounces with unyielding purpose and songstress Liz Wright simply sours on James Taylor’s “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight.” The St. Louis native major influences were the iconic Ray Charles and the infallible alto saxophonist Hank Crawford. In time, however, Sanborn has since perfected his identity sound-wise to approach each unwavering note from his own unique perspective.

With extensive talent on hand and memorable compositions to boot it should be no surprise the six-time Grammy winner has successfully recorded another noteworthy album. On CLOSER, David Sanborn delicately unleashes another palette embodied with expansive, warm, and expressive sounds. In retrospect, somehow I missed this wonderful piece on the album titled “Another Time, Another Place” coupled with his rendition of “Poinciana” makes this revisit all worth the effort as I listen to Sanborn enunciate his controlled tone funnel through bowel of the horn is absolutely enthralling experience to embrace. —Rob Young | The Urban Flux

David Sanborn - Hearsay

David Sanborn .:|:. Hearsay -[Elektra/WEA Records, 1994]

The incomparable, distinctive and influential sax legend David Sanborn has pretty much stayed the course during his early years playing it safe with radio friendly hook filled pop-rock-funk instrumental songs. Meanwhile, he obviously felt a need to switch gears again as he incorporated what seemed an abrasive funky-side of his songbook anchored to his St. Louis roots. Once again, he seemed not satisfied with his position and transcend into a new direction musically by answering his critics dabbling into a contrasting style to readjust his sound on Another Hand which scared the heck out of his fan-base.

On the heels of their critically acclaimed fifth CD, Return of the Composer, bassist Mark Saltman and pianist William Knowles have produced a sophisticated yet rhythmically driven statement with a fresh point of view that illustrates the importance of combining intricate song craft with introspective emotion. Coming January 26, 2010, the new David Sanborn recording on Decca “Only Everything.”

David Sanborn | Only Everything – [Decca, 2010]

David Sanborn - Only Everything

The genius is back with his new album Only Everything, scheduled for release on Decca, on January 26, 2010. “Among the great saxophonists of the past four decades,” says one Rolling Stone writer, “David Sanborn has earned an identity all his own. He’s jazz, he’s funk, he’s soul, he’s pop, he’s blues, he’s rock. Most remarkably, he excels in each of these genres with a voice that is both forceful and tender, sensuous and subtle.”

With Only Everything, the second of Sanborn’s homage to the aesthetic of Ray Charles, he revisits his roots with fresh perspective. The New York Times called David’s 2008 Here and Gone, the first of his tribute series, “a disarming delight.” He returns to this territory with renewed passion.

“If anyone would ask me what Ray—or Ray’s musicians—meant to me, my answer might be, `only everything,” says David. “As a concept, Only Everything, is about gratitude. I’m grateful not only for the musical life I’ve been able to live, but the original sources of inspiration that continue to inform and excite me fifty years after encountering them.” Continue reading →

David Sanborn | Live at Montreux 1984 (2009) Classic Contemporary Jazz [DVD]

David Sanborn

David Sanborn

David Sanborn has been a frequent visitor to the Montreux Jazz Festival, either headlining in his own right, as a sideman or as part of nineties “super group” Legends. This DVD focuses on his second headlining appearance in 1984 when he was touring in support of his “Straight To The Heart” album, which would see him win the second of his six Grammy Awards to date. The set combines tracks from that album with others from across his career. It features a special guest appearance by Rickie Lee Jones on piano and vocals on the track “Autumn Leaves”. In 2008 David Sanborn released his 23rd album and his diverse career continues to thrive both on stage and in the studio.

The arctic freeze is seriously kicking the eastern half of the U.S.  Apparently, I forgot to complete this … it’s obvious posting while sleepy isn’t exactly the best thing to do while blogging. Let’s kick off Friday with another diverse mix of “The Weekend Spin,” with four tasty yet challenging jazz titles delve into. Enjoy!

Roy Hargrove | RH Factor: Hard Groove [Jazz/Funk/Verve/2003]

This is an album that reveals as much about the perspective of the listener as about the music itself. Are you coming at this from a pure jazz perspective? There isn’t too much straight ahead stuff on this album and you may be with the critics that bashed Roy for making something more accessible than typical jazz fare. Hoping for a jazz-hip-hop hybrid? To me this is one of the more successful combinations because Roy toured with the soulquarians and has immersed himself for the past few years in this music. He’s willing to be lyrical when the time comes. I especially enjoy the track “How I Know” for example. I don’t know what neo-soul fans are going to make of this and I’m curious to see how the album does saleswise. I dig the Erykah Badu/Q-Tip combination [some of Q-Tip’s better recent work] “Poetry”. ~ Source: Amazon.com/Souldrummer
