Most prominent, of course, has been his highly original fusion of east and west, jazz mixed with the sounds of his Indian heritage. But that’s too easy and linear a depiction of this open-eared and inventive composer, who has absorbed an enormous variety of music into his thinking and amalgamated it into a singular vision.

New York City is the jazz capital of the world and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in Jazz at Lincoln Center is one of the music’s greatest venues. On October 10, 2009, over the course of two sold-out sets, legendary vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson recorded what would become Somewhere In The Night. The album, which is being released on Kind of Blue Records on September 25, also features the Joey DeFrancesco Trio — guitarist Peter Bernstein and drummer Byron Landham as well as its organist namesake.

The Jazz Connect Conference at APAP|NYC 2013, organized by JazzTimes in conjunction with the Jazz Forward Coalition, announced the tentative schedule of events for this gathering of the jazz community. The conference will be held January 10-11, 2013 in New York City and will feed into the annual APAP (Association of Performing Arts Presenters) Conference as well as Winter Jazzfest. The Jazz Connect Conference will feature a series of workshops, panels and events held over the course of two days. Registration is free, but attendees must pre-register by going here to the event site.

This past April, Toots Thielemans, arguably the most famous harmonica player worldwide, turned 90-years old. To celebrate this milestone, Thielemans is releasing a live CD/DVD package with the support of his European quartet – pianist Karel Boehlee, drummer Hans van Oosterhout and double-bass player Hein Van de Geyn. The album is comprised of eleven tracks recorded over the past five years during Thielemans’ latest globetrotting tours while the accompanying DVD focuses on his group’s latest concert in Japan.
