Donny McCaslin, CASTING FOR GRAVITY

“With his expansive feeling and unadulterated love of music-making, McCaslin is in some ways the Sonny Rollins of his generation.” – Ottawa Citizen

“I’m hard pressed to think of other horn players who can routinely deliver performances as astonishing and Herculean as McCaslin’s-and even better, he always uses his prodigious energy in the service of a greater musical purpose.” – Chicago Reader

“It was radical. With fire-breathing fists, (McCaslin)
deployed his ordinance to the ground…” – Boston Globe

New Artists, New Technologies, New Dave Douglas Quintet Album With All-New Lineup

Dave Douglas

While 2012 could be the year of the global apocalypse as predicted by the Mayans, trumpeter, composer and label head Dave Douglas and his label Greenleaf Music (GLM) continue to roll full-steam ahead by releasing jazz, post-jazz, and other creative music. The label’s credo is simply about creativity in musical expression. As a result, GLM’s sound is defined by the artists Douglas chooses to sign, allowing them room to define their own world—new sounds that connect, music that has something personal to say that is unique to that individual, as well as having something universal to offer. GLM believes that what interests listeners is not just the recorded product, but the artists themselves. As such we are interested in making available sheet music, artist commentary, discussion and more. Continue reading →

Composer/Guitarist Joel Harrison Negotiates Contrasting Textures and Genres on his Stunning New All-Star Septet Album

Featuring Donny McCaslin, Gary Versace, Christian Howes, Dana Leong, Stephan Crump & Clarence Penn

The Joel Harrison 7, Search

Joel Harrison’s latest CD, Search, finds the critically acclaimed composer/guitarist challenging himself compositionally, using extended forms and techniques borrowed from many of his favorite classical composers. The end result transcends style and genre – the writing is stunning, and cements Harrison as one of the most important contemporary composers of the day.

The compositions flow seamlessly, instantly immersing the listener in a coherent, rich, dynamic sound world. Pieces such as “Grass Valley and Beyond” and “The Beauty of Failure” have rich, memorable melodies that stick with the listener long after the album ends. Complex rhythmic motion is a hallmark of the multi-layered, emotionally wrenching “A Magnificent Death,” which Harrison describes as the centerpiece of the record. This 15-minute mini-epic tells the story of a close friend who died in 2009. Continue reading →

Blackman, Murray, Russo - TURNING POINT

Blackman, Murray, Russo -][- TURNING POINT – [Top Floor Studios, 2010]

A wonderful blend of original, creative, and fresh modern jazz featuring saxophonist Donny McCaslin! Half original material from the pianist and the rest are covers of Peter Gabriel-Beatles-Brahms et. al

Staples around the thriving Baltimore/Washington D.C. jazz scene for 20 years, Blackman Murray Russo trio has captured a delightfully fresh and well-executed musical product. Recorded at the famed Bennett Studios in NJ and featuring modern horn great Donny McCaslin, they explore mostly the unique musical approach of the pianist, Alan Blackman. His originals occupy almost half of the musical ground here, and they are varied in scope and interesting from both a rhythmic and harmonic vantage point. From the almost middle eastern opening version of a Brahms Waltz through the groovy standard(with some nice new chords) I’ve Never Been in Love to a 9/4 fender rhodes inflected tour de force on You’ve Changed, this band is tight and the solos are at a very accomplished and individual level. Highly recommended if you are tired of boring smooth jazz and bored with tired traditional swing. –CDBaby | Album Notes

Donny McCaslin | Declaration

Donny McCaslin | Declaration – [Sunnyside, 2009]

Donny McCaslin - Declaration

Donny McCaslin’s last CD, “Recommended Tools“, was a brawny saxophone trio disc. The follow-up adds a pianist, Edward Simon, a guitarist, Ben Monder, Scott Colley on bass, Antonio Sanchez on drums, and some songs have some combination of Alex Sipiagin, Marcus Rojas, Chris Komer, Marshall Gilkes, and Tatum Greenblatt on their horns.

The larger band dulls the impact of McCaslin’s playing, but that’s fine since McCaslin’s writing and the band’s performing are very good. The title track is an excellent ballad, and the faster-paced songs are all good. “Late Night Gospel” ends the disc as its title would suggest – with a slower bluesier song.

This is recommended to fans of modern straightahead jazz. —Anthony Cooper
