KENDRICK SCOTT ORACLE – CONVICTION

Kendrick Scott ORACLE -][- CONVICTION – [Concord Jazz, 2013]

With the 2007 release of The Source – his debut recording as a leader – drummer and composer Kendrick Scott established a reputation right out of the gate as an explorer, someone with a generous measure of wisdom and insight to counterbalance his youth and newcomer status.

Nearly six years later, Scott and his band continue to dig beneath the surface to find the deeper truths in Conviction, their new CD scheduled for release on Concord Jazz on March 26, 2013 (international release dates may vary). As the title suggests, Conviction is the vehicle by which Kendrick and company look past the mundane and examine the motivating forces that propel us through life, even in those times when the greater truths are obscured by the tedium of the everyday. Wolfgang Haffner -][- HEART OF THE MATTER –Mp3– [ACT Music, 2012] –

The title “Heart of the Matter” by Wolfgang Haffner’s new album is definitely more than a play on words a matter of the heart -. Therefore “a matter of the heart” – his job for Germany was highly decorated, winning among others the Echo Jazz 2010 drummer, since He began his career with 18 years in the band of Albert Mangelsdorff. The following work for numerous national and international stars and the participation of over 400 albums testify. But only since he as ACT artist makes his own albums, he feels the “heart of the matter” close: “I no longer feel only as a drummer, but as a universal musician. I compose, arrange, search and enter worlds of sound, which is ultimately my style. ” Continue reading →

Manu Katché -][- MANU –Mp3– [ECM Records, 2012] –

Eponymously-titled album from Manu Katché. On his fourth ECM disc, Manus unique drumming sets the scene and direction, with compositions and arrangements radiating outward from its rhythm-patterns. His strongly propulsive yet relaxed groove is unlike any other drummers, and it lifts up the soloists. Personnel in the ever-changing Katché band currently includes Norwegians Nils Pettter Molvaer and Tore Brunborg, first heard together on ECM in the band Masqualero in the 1980s: they still play most attractively together.

British keyboardist Jim Watson also makes a strong showing with minimalistically-insistent as well as lyrical piano and thick, swirling organ. Recorded March 2012 in the South of France, and issued on the eve of a major European tour. -[Editorial Review | Amazon]-

Charlie Hunter and Scott Amendola, Not Getting Behind is The New Getting Ahead

Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead, guitarist Charlie Hunter’s new duo recording with drummer Scott Amendola, is an album that’s easy to get behind. A complete departure from last year’s Public Domain —a true solo album — and the previous year’s Gentlemen, I Neglected to Inform You You Will Not Be Getting Paid — which incorporated two trombones and trumpet into Hunter’s instrumental arsenal — Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead is Hunter’s first recording of original compositions in three years. Since relocating in 1999 he has performed with the likes of saxophonist Joe Lovano, NEA Jazz Master Von Freeman, Branford Marsalis, Seamus Blake, James Spaulding, Greg Osby, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and pianist John Hicks. He has also had the fortune of learning from master drummers Jimmy Cobb, Joe Chambers, Michael Carvin, Lewis Nash and Kenny Washington. Another recent achievement includes the completion of his Master’s degree from The Juilliard School’s Jazz division. Continue reading →
