Eddie Gomez, PER SEMPRE

Eddie Gomez -][- Per Sempre –MP3– [BFM Jazz, 2012 | Review] –

I’ll have to admit, it’s been awhile since I’ve pampered my listening space with any solo projects by the renowned bassist Eddie Gomez. Nonetheless, the time has come. Gomez is here with an inexhaustible new recording titled “Per Sempre” that’s ready, auspicious, and refined by nurturing sounds waiting for jazz aficionados to submerge themselves into with repeated listens.

“Marika Groove” is a twelve-minute instrumental tour-de-force by Chick Corea written for virtuoso marimba soloist Mika Yoshida and Grammy®-winning clarinetist Richard Stoltzman. Drummer Steve Gadd and bassist Eddie Gomez join Yoshida and Stoltzman to capture Corea’s composition in a sprawling, ebullient track featuring finely-honed instrumental interplay, muscular rhythmic structures, and ceaselessly inventive melodies, which Yoshida delivers with her signature inspiration and aplomb. The track was recorded at Avatar Studios in New York NY, engineered by Jay Messina and produced by Gadd and Yoshika. Continue reading →

Corea, Gomez and Motian, Further Explorations

Corea, Gomez & Motian -][- Further Explorations -(MP3)- [Concord Jazz, 2012]

Produced by Corea, Further Explorations was recorded May 4-17, 2010, live at the Blue Note in New York City. (2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Evans’ original Explorations LP with Motian and bassist Scott LaFaro on the Riverside label.) In preparation, Corea, Gomez and Motian examined the entire Bill Evans discography. Rather than approach the music as a tribute, his material provides more of a template. Each musician also contributes original material. The results are inspired, as this elevated piano trio plays with near-telepathic empathy and a remarkable blend of ingenuity and emotional depth. Eddie Gomez - Forever (2010)

Eddie Gomez -][- Forever – [Plus Loin, 20010]

Legendary bassist Eddie Gomez and pianist Cesarius Alvim commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the ir first recorded collaboration with Forever (Plus Loin). The two masters take on a varied repertoire: from standards such as “Spring is Here” and “Invitation,” original compositions from both Gomez and Alvim, and Brazilian pianist Luiz Eça’s piece “The Dolphin.”

Alvim first met Gomez through Bill Evans, with whom Gomez played for eleven years. “Meeting Bill Evans was a musical and human encounter of which the memory is unforgettable,” says Alvim. “He had a beautiful message of love for life and music. Afterwards I met Eddie, a musician whom I had always admired. From the first notes we played toge the r, everything was said. We had the same rhythmic and harmonic sense, and the same passion for melodic phrasing.” Gomez elaborates on the ir penchant for melody: “The repertoire is very melodic and also rhythmically treated. The melodies are very strong, and are approached in poetic way with a strong sense of the jazz feeling and ares the tic.” Continue reading →
