Darren Barrett, FIRST ONE UP

Darren Barrett -][- FIRST ONE UP –Mp3– [J Curve Records, 2011]

Darren Barrett was the 1997 Winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and is widely heralded as the next important trumpeter/composer to come on the scene. He is currently a member of the Jackie McLean Quintet as well as leader of his own quintet. Darren has also performed and or recorded with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Heath, Slide Hampton and Antonio Hart. First One Up is Darren Barrett’s debut recording as a leader. The album was produced by the legendary Donald Byrd who is Darren’s mentor and one of his primary influences.

The members of his quintet are pianist Aaron Goldberg, tenor saxophonist Jimmy Greene, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer John Lamkin who are regarded as among the finest of the new generation of jazz musicians. Alto sax great, Kenny Garrett is featured on several tracks including two takes of the memorable title track First One Up. It is recommended that the listener fasten their seat belt before listening to this recording as it smokes from start to finish. -[Jacarre | Customer Review | Amazon.com]- Continue reading →

Danny Green -][- A THOUSAND WAYS HOME –Mp3– [Tapestry, 2012 | Review]

Occasionally when a new artist appears, they come armed with vivid yet unstrained recipe of melodies, creativity and impressive harmonics accompanied by a stellar cast of possibly unfamiliar musicians to expand their imaginative voice. Most recently San Diego native pianist, composer and educator Danny Green was brought to my attention. With his sophomore recordings titled “A THOUSAND WAYS HOME,” he effortlessly pens an appetizing hodgepodge of thirteen thought-provoking originals on Tapestry records.

The title piece “A THOUSAND WAYS HOME” opens the session with an engaging bounce, symmetry and flawless rhythms wrapped with an infectious samba evolving from within. Meanwhile the ensemble maintains their flawless dexterity by exchanging unswerving solos on a spunky tune appropriately titled “Unwind.” Continue reading →

“In her piano playing as well as her compositions Angelica Sanchez seeks out the lyrical heartbeat within any avant-garde storm.” – The New York Times/Chinen

Angelica Sanchez Quintet, WIRES & MOSS

Angelica Sanchez Quintet -][- WIRES & MOSS –Mp3– [Clean Feed Records, 2012] –

It’s no longer possible, today, to exclude the name of pianist and composer/improviser Angelica Sanchez when discussing the New York jazz scene. With her fluid, loose and lyrical style, contrasting with an energetic and avant-gardist approach, she seems to be at the center of a hurricane, dealing with poetic feelings and magmatic chaos. Somehow combining the influences of Herbie Hancock and Cecil Taylor, in her previous solo album, “A Little House”, Sanchez used a John Cage favorite instrument, the toy piano. Not to play children lullabies, but to introduce ironic and ambiguous shadows in her music, reminiscent of her memories of the horror movies she saw in a younger age, with soundtracks using that tool to maximum effect. If the toy piano was, then, her ghost-in-the-machine, now the same role is performed by Marc Ducret’s guitar. Continue reading →
