Project Trio, WHEN WILL THEN NOW

Project Trio -][- WHEN WILL THEN NOW –Mp3– [Harmonyville Records, 2012] –

PROJECT Trio is taking chamber music to a whole new level. Greg Pattillo, flute, Eric Stephenson, cello, and Peter Seymour, bass, are pushing the boundaries of chamber music with a high-octane mix of classical, jazz, hip-hop, and rock. The Trio performs to enthusiastic audiences of all ages in concert halls, clubs, and classrooms around the world. Acclaim for the Trio and its members runs the gamut from Downbeat Magazine, which praises PROJECT Trio as “packed with musicianship, joy, and surprise” to the New York Times, calling beatboxing flutist Greg Pattillo “the best in the world at what he does.” The Wall Street Journal hails the group’s “wide appeal, subversive humor and first-rate playing.” Continue reading →

Chad McCullough and Bram Weijters -][- URBAN NIGHTINGALE – [Origin Records, 2012] –

Now with multiple tours of Belgium and the western U.S. under their belts, Seattle-based trumpeter Chad McCullough and pianist Bram Weijters from Antwerp present their second recording of modern, lyrical originals.

With bassist Piet Verbist and drummer John Bishop, the quartet creates a perpetually unhurried environment where melodies can unfurl over harmonically compelling compositions. Bram displays a Brad Mehldau-like touch on his Buildings in a Dark City, and McCullough’s burnished flugelhorn searches on Nightingale.

Clarence Penn, DALI IN COBBLE HILL

Clarence Penn -][- Dali In Cobble Hill -[Criss Cross, 2012]-

On his long-awaited follow-up to his critically lauded 1996 Criss Cross debut, Penn’s Landing, and the equally powerful Play-Penn, from 2001, master drummer-percussionist Clarence Penn presents Dali in Cobble Hill, a meditation on how the iconic Surrealist painter might have digested a stroll through Penn’s Brooklyn neighborhood.

The eight originals and two standards incorporate a variety of moods, flavors, and strategies that reflect Penn’s extensive activity as a sideman for jazz’ best-and-brightest over the past decades; his ensemble of grand master generational contemporaries Chris Potter on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, Adam Rogers on guitar, and Ben Street on bass inhabit the stories, playing with deep imagination and virtuosic craft. -[Editorial Review | Amazon]-

Dr. Lonnie Smith, THE HEALER

Dr. Lonnie Smith -][- THE HEALER -[Pilgrimage Records, 2012]-

The great B3 organ master and conjurer of sound, Doctor Lonnie Smith, has made some great studio recordings, but he’ll be the first to tell you that his music needs to be experienced live. The release of his brand new live recording The Healer marks the Doctor’s first live recording since his landmark 1970 album Live At Club Mozambique. It showcases the great bandleader reinventing the possibilities of sound along with two young stars – guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg and drummer Jamire Williams.

The Healer puts the listener front row center at a wild ride of a show that seamlessly blends jazz, fusion, hip hop, world music, and of course the B3 funk that Doc helped create. It also marks the launch of Pilgrimage Records, the good doctor’s new completely artist controlled record label. -[Editorial Review | Amazon]-

Terje Rypdal -][- Odyssey: In Studio & In Concert –Mp3– [ECM, 2012] –

Terje Rypdal’s Odyssey: In Studio & In Concert is a very special release. It includes not only the complete Odyssey album (recorded 1975) on CD for the first time (restoring the long track Rolling Stone to its rightful place), but also a full disc of previously unreleased material on which Terje Rypdal’s Odyssey band is augmented by the Swedish Radio Jazz Group in a 1976 live performance of Rypdal s suite Unfinished Highballs.
