Miguel Zenón and Laurent Coq -][- RAYUELA –Mp3– [Sunnyside, 2012] –

The music on this recording was inspired by the book Rayuela, by the Argentine writer Julio Cortázar. This masterpiece has long provided me with an immense amount of inspiration and ideas, forging a possibility for what art could be: a medium of boundless freedom, both for the creator and for the audience. The narrative in Rayuela takes place both in Paris and Buenos Aires, and it was indeed this “”French-Latin American”” connection that ignited the idea for a collaboration between Laurent and myself. We have become close friends through the years but had never had the chance to collaborate on a musical project before (aside from the casual performance here and there). Working on Rayuela seemed like the perfect opportunity. Continue reading →

Buster Williams, SOMETHING MORE

Buster Williams -][- SOMETHING MORE –Mp3– [In+Out Records, 2011-|-1989] –

. . . What more could you want? This late eighties classic session on the German label In & Out (who also brought us the great and largely unheard band Roots) features Herbie Hancock (piano and keyboards), Wayne Shorter (soprano and tenor sax), Al Foster (drums), and the brilliant (and largely unknown) Japanese trumpeter Shunzo Ohno. With leader Buster Williams, who has played with Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Chet Baker, Woody Shaw, and McCoy Tyner, this is a killer band. Somehow, this disc has flown almost completely under the radar. And that’s a shame, given the level of playing consistently on display. Continue reading →

“Joe Alterman has tremendous taste and a passionate respect for swing and space. His touch on the keyboard is reminiscent of pianists from earlier years who listened carefully, felt expressively and actually cared about what the listener heard. Joe is a remarkable swinger and poet.” —Marc Myers, JazzWax.com

Joe Alterman, GIVE ME THE SIMPLE LIFE

Joe Alterman -][- GIVE ME THE SIMPLE LIFE –Mp3– [Miles High Records, 2012] –

Joe Alterman is a jazz pianist whose playing is a joyous throwback to the keyboard stylists of the 1950s. By merging the patient touch of past pianists with his own contemporary sound, Alterman manages to revitalize the familiar, rekindling memories of why you started listening to jazz in the first place.

Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Joe moved to New York in the fall of 2007 to study music at New York University. He graduated in May of 2012 but is now back to complete his Masters’ degree. While there, he has studied with greats including Don Friedman, Jean Michel-Pilc, Ralph Lalama, Joe Lovano and John Scofield, among others. Continue reading →

“Drummer Da Fonseca perhaps the best Brazilian trap drummer of his generation, plays with an uncommon mix of finesse and drive” – Mark Holston, Jazziz Magazine

Duduka Da Fonseca QUINTET, Jazz Samba – Jazz Exploration

Drummer/Composer Duduka Da Fonseca is a blender, set at high speed. The Brazilian drummer (born in Rio De Janeiro in 1951), who arrived in New York City in 1975, has been actively exploring the perfect marriage and mixture of jazz and samba since forming his first Samba Jazz trio as a precocious 14 year old (a band he called “Bossa Trio”), with brother Miguel on bass. Over the years Da Fonseca has becomea master at combining these seemingly disparate worlds, and has emerged as one of the foremost proponents of the genre. Continue reading →

Masta Conga & his new Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra, LAST ODYSSEY

Masta Conga & his new Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra -][- LAST ODYSSEY -[Ubiquity, 2012] –

Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra’s 2012 album, Last Odyssey, finds the French band in fine form, creating music with Jazz as it’s foundation laced with strains of Ethio and Nigerian Funk combined with Latin Percussion and rhythms.

By taking the heaviest elements from each genre and distilling it down to it’s most potent form, the band’s true identity is revealed and sets them apart from their influences. -[Editorial Review]- Continue reading →

Luis Perdomo, The ‘Infancia’ Project

Luis Perdomo -][- The ‘INFANCIA’ Project –Mp3– [Criss Cross Jazz, 2012] –

This time the exceptional pianist Luis Perdomo reaches back to the earliest influences he grew up listening to: South American and Afro Caribbean Rhythms, on this, his second outing for Criss Cross Jazz: The ‘Infancia’ Project.

Luis has handpicked a well balanced and stellar band to back him up: two players of the new generation with fresh ideas and concepts, Mark Shim on tenor saxophone and virtuoso percussionist Mauricio Herrera, plus two very influential legends deeply rooted in the tradition: bassist Andy Gonzalez and drummer Ignacio Berroa.

With The ‘Infancia’ Project Luis Perdomo further establishes himself as a resourceful master musician and bandleader. -[Criss Cross Jazz]- and -[Excerpt | Biography]-
