San Francisco Jazz Festival - 2010
Sunday, November 7, 7PM Palace of Fine Arts Theatre
One of the major jazz-fusion bands born in the ‘70s, the Yellowjackets have continued to evolve and create great new music across three decades. The group features original members Russell Ferrante (keyboards) and Jimmy Haslip (bass), along with world-class saxophonist Bob Mintzer and the return of drummer Will Kennedy. With imaginative compositions, powerhouse chops and deep funk grooves, they are among the premier working bands in jazz history.
Keyboardist Jeff Lorber emerged during the same period with six albums that he now calls “second generation fusion.” Always a phenomenal player and composer, Lorber’s trademark sound became widely emulated and he is also a respected record producer. For this SFJAZZ date, Lorber returns to his soulful, funk-laden brand of electric jazz. Joining Jeff in this contemporary all-star band are legendary trumpeter Randy Brecker (of Brecker Brothers fame) and saxophonist Eric Marienthal (Chick Corea Elektric band). Along with the Yellowjackets, this show is truly a slammin’ double-bill! –SFJAZZ Festival 2010
