Eric Reed, THE BADDEST MONK

Eric Reed -][- The Baddest Monk – [Savant, 2012] –

Pianist Eric Reed has claimed that Monk’s music makes it possible “to travel way out there, if you’re willing to go where it can take you.” On The Baddest Monk, Reed and his colleagues prove more than willing. The Monk classics recorded here illustrate the breadth of Reed’s thought on one of the most idiosyncratic of jazz composers.

Reed and his ensemble are able to penetrate to the very core the Monk’s writing, dismantle its component parts and reassemble them so that they contain not only the essence of Monk, but that of the players themselves. -[Amazon | Editorial Reviews]- Continue reading →

Eric Reed -][- Something Beautiful -(MP3)- [Wj3 Records, 2011]

Eric Reed, who was named in the “Rising Star, Piano category in this year’s Downbeat magazine’s 59th Annual International Critics Poll, will release Something Beautiful on WJ3 Records on October 18. This collection marks Reed’s 20th CD as a leader- a milestone for a musician of Reed’s young age.

“It’s nice to be able to listen to 20 projects and hear the same person on each recording, but with steady growth, says Reed. “Each is an aural documentation to remind me of tender moments or daunting challenges that took place around the time of each session. It sounds like a cliché, but my favorite recording is always my most recent. Continue reading →

Eric Reed - THE DANCING MONK

Eric Reed -[|]- THE DANCING MONK -(MP3)- [Savant Records]

This wonderful recording by Eric Reed and his trio accomplish a very difficult feat—making Monk’s tunes sound like Monk, but also offering original takes on the music. What we have here is a trio at the top of their game–great music, fantastic swinging improvisations, and heartfelt ballads.

My only complaint is that the CD could have accomodated a few more tunes. Super playing and the sound, by Katherine Miller, is top notch. One of the best Monk tributes I have heard.
