Natalie Cressman & Secret Garden -][- UNFOLDING –Mp3– [Cressman, 2012] –

New York-based trombonist/singer/composer Natalie Cressman has won acclaim for her ability to play fluently in a variety of musical styles, and at 21 years old she’s honed a preternaturally worldly conception of her own. Hailed a “velveteen-voiced brass-blower” by the Denver Post, Cressman has sought to stretch across stylistic boundaries with every project she takes on, each time striking listeners with the depth of her musicianship and her ability to blend seamlessly into so many different musical settings. From Carnegie Hall to the House of Blues, from the Apollo to Lincoln Center, Natalie’s versatility and enthusiasm for new music has propelled her into a richly diverse musical career. Erin Boheme, WHAT A LIFE

Erin Boheme -][- WHAT A LIFE – [Heads Up, 2012] –

When you’re young, five or six years can make all the difference in the world. Sometimes the road is rocky, sometimes it’s full of good fortune. Most times it’s a little of both. But no matter what the terrain, the traveler who keeps her eyes and ears – and her heart – open to the world will inevitably learn something along the way.

Every girl dreams. But, in the case of relationships – dreams don’t always work out in the way one might have imagined. More often than not, they don’t. Erin Boheme is every girl. For the first five years of her “dating” life, the right things just didn’t seem to materialize – but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Often times getting to the dance might be easy, but it never guarantees you a successful dance. Continue reading →

MIX OF ORIGINALS AND STANDARDS PRESENTED WITH WARM TONES AND A YOUNG PERSPECTIVE ON LOVE

Halie Loren, Heart First

Some singers sing to themselves, some sing to crowds. When listeners hear singer, composer, and instrumentalist Halie Loren weave her genre-spanning magic, they are convinced that she is singing just to them alone, with authenticity and emotional maturity. As she makes music with her voice, she understands the deepest meanings of the lyrics and communicates them with great intimacy. Still in her twenties, Loren has released several albums and toured the world singing jazz and pop. Her new album, Heart First (Justin Time Records), features long-time collaborator and co-producer Matt Treder on piano, Mark Schneider on bass, William Seiji Marsh on guitar, Brian West on drums, Sergei Teleshev on accordion, Rob Birdwell on flugelhorn and trumpet, Hank Shreve on harmonica, and Dale Bradley on cello.

Lyambiko, SINGS GERSHWIN

Lyambiko -[|]- Sings Gershwin [Sony IMPORT, 2012]

The singer LYAMBIKO was born in the German state of Thuringia and grew up in a musically active family. Her grandfather was already a member of a jazz combo back in the 1930’s, and her father sang in both a church choir and in jazz and world-music bands in his native Tanzania. As a child, LYAMBIKO took lessons on the saxophone and the clarinet and in classical singing, and played the tenor sax in her music school’s big band. She was only 17 when she founded her first band as a singer (folk, pop and blues), and was the youngest entrant in a band contest where she won her first studio recording. Continue reading →

LABEL DONATES 10% OF PROCEEDS TO SELECT CHARITIES

Most would agree that profitable, thriving record labels are few and far between in this day and age. For this reason, it’s refreshing to see the still relatively new jazz label, Random Act Records, not only consistently release new music, but additionally donate 10% from each album sale to charity. Past releases include albums by guitarist Randy Johnston, saxophonist Jeff Rupert, a duo album by pianist Kenny Drew, Jr. and guitarist Larry Coryell, and the label’s debut release, pianist Jeff Lashway’s Reunion. Husband and wife team (and label co-founders), Scott and Anna Elias, move ambitiously into the new year by releasing debuts from two artists on the rise: talented young trumpeter, vocalist and songwriter Bria Skonberg, as well as the exuberant, gifted and swinging drummer Carmen Intorre.
