Jimmy Owens, The Monk Project

Jimmy Owens -][- The Monk Project -(MP3)- [IPO Recordings, 2012 | Review]

As any veteran jazz enthusiast will concur, trumpeter | flugelhornist Jimmy Owens needs no introduction. In his own right, Owen’s a principle player in the stable of his luminaires in mainstream jazz. With his latest endeavor, he pays homage by instinctively transforming the pulse and spirit of the music of the legendary Thelonious Monk composer-pianist extraordinaire on his latest recording “The Monk Project” now available on IPO Recordings.

On this project, Owens tackled this collective by calling in top-shelve talented musicians to record this record: includes the irreplaceable Wycliffe Gordon – Trombone, Marcus Strickland – saxophone, Howard Johnson – Tuba/baritone saxophone, Kenny Barron – piano, and Winard Harper – drums. Brian Lynch Latin Jazz Sextet | Conclave – [Criss Cross Jazz, 2005]

Brian Lynch Latin Jazz Sextet - Conclave

While waiting for my wife to arrive on a late train, I heard “Across The Bridge” on the local jazz station. I woke up immediately as the tune reminded me of my Berklee College of Music days and a tune that I penned called “Knowledge Of Self“.

I stayed up another hour to learn the name of the tune and the artist, then logged onto Amazon later that morning and purchased the CD. The disc reminded me of Woody Shaw and his great volume of work, as well as Billy Harper and Rene McLean.

The disc stayed in my CD player so long, that my wife begged me to put together a session to play some of the old tunes. Needless to say, I STILL enjoy a rotation or two of ConClave! —Grantmeonewish

Brian Lynch Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra – Bolero Nights (for Billie Holiday)

Brian Lynch Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra | Bolero Nights (for Billie Holiday) – [Venus Records – Japan 2009]

Brian Lynch - Bolero Nights

For a fleeting moment -just one fleeting moment- it appears to be a bit of a stretch putting “bolero” and Billie Holiday together. There appears to be a tad too much “bolero” and not enough “Holiday” on Brian Lynch’s Bolero Nights (Venus Records – Japan 2009). Soon, however, the plaintive wail of Lynch’s trumpet and moan of his flugelhorn and the moody arrangements of “Afinque” start to tie “bolero” and Billie Holiday rather tightly together. Although the music is by no means ponderous and depressing to listen to, there is an elemental sadness to it. This is a masterstroke on the part of Lynch because Billie Holiday embodied something similar as she sang her heart out on so many classics. Mercifully, Lynch also avoids the obvious ones. However, he is masterful in mimicing the voice of the great chanteuse with long “blue” notes -especially in the first chorus of “La Sitiera,” when Lynch draws them out in his inimitable manner with dynamic expression.

Only some of Ellington’s great trumpeters were known to have done this with untouchable effect, and trumpeters such as Larry Cramer and Reynaldo Melian. –Reviewed by Raul de Gamma (Read the full review)

Roy Hargrove | Moment to Moment

“Moment to Moment,” is absolutely stunning, adorable, captivating, expressive and soulful. These compelling classics are rejuvenated from the spirit of an extraordinary composer, arranger, producer and trumpeter Roy Hargrove. From the beginning, you’ll find yourself seduced by the impending transparency of Hargrove’s attractive tonality on these exquisite ballads and arrangements. These infinite treasures will envelope you with a stream of imminent melodies painting a picture of soncially challenging, stimulating, beautiful, and inspiring music. Simply amazing, this buoyant masterpiece is one to savor from this point to eternity! ~ The Urban Flux

Roy Hargrove | Moment to Moment – [Polygram Records, 2000]

Roy Hargrove, Moment to Moment

Roy Hargrove, Moment to Moment

Since the 1950s, the album Clifford Brown with Strings has set the standard for playing ballads on the trumpet. In the 1980s, Wynton Marsalis’s “Hot House Flowers” was a welcome addition to that ballad tradition. With Moment to Moment, Roy Hargrove sets a soft tone for the 21st century. Backed by alto saxophonist Sherman Irby, pianist Larry Willis, bassist Gerald Cannon, and drummer Willie Jones III, Hargrove’s tender trumpet and flügelhorn beautifully combine the best of Freddie Hubbard’s power and Art Farmer’s phrasing. Draped with pillow-soft orchestrations by Hargrove, Willis, Cedar Walton, and Gil Goldstein, the leader sings through his horn with a longing and lyrical melodic touch. Chestnuts like “You Go to My Head,” Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “How Insensitive,” and the title track by Henry Mancini come alive with the same freshness found on Hargrove’s newer gems, including Pat Metheny’s tearful “Always and Forever” and the trumpeter’s own “Natural Wonders.” Simply put, this offering from Roy Hargrove is a splendid love letter for a new century. —Eugene Holley Jr.

Claudio Roditi | Brazilliance x4 – [Resonance Records, 2009]

Claudio Roditi - Braziliance x4

The repertoire is as classy as the players: a jazz standard (“Tune Up“), five pieces by Brazilian luminaries (Johnny Alf, the late Victor Assis Brasil, Joao Donato, the late Durval Ferreira, and Raul de Souza), and four Roditi compositions. All of these tunes are treated in the best bossa nova tradition, which as this is written is a half-century old and as fresh and vital as ever.

Bass – Leonardo Cioglia
