A new Clayton Brothers release is always a family affair – not only due to the actual blood ties of siblings John and Jeff Clayton and son/nephew Gerald, but in the sense that quintet-mates Terell Stafford and Obed Calvaire have become part of the Claytons’ extended musical family through years of touring and recording. A landmark recording, Thoughts on God, is the most recent release from prolific saxophonist and composer Eric Person. His ninth disc as a leader, the fifth on his own Distinction Records label and first funded through the Kickstarter program, an on-line funding platform for creative projects. Having fronted several different units including Meta-Four and Metamorphosis, as well as the cooperative TrioKinesis the veteran horn man is heard here leading his own jazz orchestra for the very first time. Person is an alumnus of the forward looking big bands of McCoy Tyner, David Murray and John Hicks, and is best known for his wide-ranging sideman work with Dave Holland, Chico Hamilton, and World Saxophone Quartet. On Thoughts on God, Person exhibits the fruits of lessons learned during his quarter of a century of diversified experience. The pieces composed for this twelve part suite are inspired by his powerful abiding faith in the positive force of the Creator. Continue reading →

Eric Erhardt, A BETTER FATE

Eric Erhardt -][- A BETTER FATE –Mp3– [Tapestry Records, 2012 | Review] –

The multi-faceted Eric Erhardt arrives with a harmonious palette of eight flavorful and astute originals pushes the envelope of his voicing’s on what is described as “acoustic fusion” on his debut album “A Better Fate.”

Based in the Mile High City (Denver), Eric was mentored by the legendary sax giant Dave Liebman. Erhardt a veteran in his own right is a notable band leader who wrote and arranged all compositions on this recording. This elegant tapestry consists of a blanket stitched and colored with the fibers of Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, rock and 20th century classic. Continue reading →

Itai Kriss - THE SHARK

Itai Kriss -][- THE SHARK -(MP3)- [Avenue K Records]

Itai Kriss is a dynamic flutist whose musical style encompasses Jazz, Latin and Middle Eastern sounds. Born into a musical household in Israel, to a British father and a South African mother, Itai started playing flute when he was 9. Alongside private lessons, he broadened his knowledge of music in the jazz streams of the Tel Aviv School for the Arts (’90-’94) and the prestigious Telma Yellin High School for the Arts (94-97). At Telma Yellin, an interest in swing, bebop and hard bop, along with his love for local Middle Eastern sounds, led to a period of experimentation in an ensemble of friends that resulted in Itai winning the Jerusalem Municipality competition for young composers. That grant financed the recording and release of his first album, Sababa, in 2000.

In January 2002 Itai toured the United States as part of a unique musical peace expedition headed by renowned saxophonist Arnie Lawrence–an ensemble of leading Jewish and Arab Israeli musicians, performing at various venues in Los Angeles, Miami and New York. Later that month he was again invited to play at New York’s Blue Note as a special guest. This successful appearance launched Itai’s New York career.

Itai currently resides in New York where he continues to play with some of the most exciting jazz musicians in town, including Dafnis Prieto, Harry Whitaker, Joe Locke, Gregory Hutchinson, Andy Gonzalez, Omer Avital, Yosvany Terry, Edmar Castaneda, Avishai Cohen, Eric McPherson, Jason Lindner, Alon Yavnai, and Aaron Goldberg, to name a few. –BIO (Itai Kriss)

Anyone who loves jazz has at some point encountered the music Latin Jazz fusionist & flutist Dave Valentin! Yep, “PURE IMAGINATION” is definitely on my short list to purchase when it’s released in a couple of Weeks!

Dave Valentin - PURE IMAGINATION

Dave Valentin -][- PURE IMAGINATION -(MP3)- [HighNote]

Jazz flutist Dave Valentin is a South Bronx native of Puerto Rican descent. He has played flute at Carnegie Hall and venues around the world.

At a young age, Valentin had aptitude as a percussionist andwas driven to do the best he could. At the age of 17, his focus switched from percussion to wind instruments. He picked up the flute in pursuit of a girl who played flute — and quickly played circles around her, discovering the talent that made him a star.

Dave Valentin has spent the past twenty-one years playing a versatile jazz style, marked by nimble insistent syncopation of a rocking salsa laced with tropical mystery and played on a variety of ethnic and classical flutes. He was trained at the High School of Music and Art. His unorthodox technique emphasizes the percussive side of flute playing. His playing comes from the heart and the spirit of an international culture, a combination of Brazilian, R&B, salsa, meringue, Latin, funk, and jazz. —The Bronx Mall

Nicole Mitchell - AWAKENING

Nicole Mitchell -[|]- AWAKENING – [Delmark, 2011]

Unique flute work in an intimate quartet setting, supported and stimulated by some of Chicago’s finest improvisers: Jeff Parker, guitar; Harrison Bankhead, bass; Avreeayl Ra, drums. Named 2010 Flutist of the Year in the Down Beat Critic’s Poll, she rides the wave into new compositions that explore many colors, moods and rhythmic grooves.

Mitchell’s earlier projects involved larger groups; Black Earth Ensemble, Black Unstoppable (DMK CD and DVD) and Black Earth Strings, Renegades. This smaller group setting opens the door for Mitchell to stretch out as a soloist more so than on any of her previous recordings.
